WOW! That's brilliant. What's it about?

Anyway, hope it all goes great and you make loads off it.

And Garrett Cook huh?

Doc Faustus
07-03-2008, 09:32 AM
It's about an alternate America where serial killers are the hottest celebrities and murder is legal in designated Safe Zones and the homicidal pharmacist who kills because he thinks monsters from another dimension are possessing women and is trying to shun fame. This book, the first in the series is about his relationship, some of the choices he's making and his crusade against the possibly unreal monsters.
Yup, Garrett Cook. Never been fond of it, really. One who prepares food in an attic. But, I've been assured that it's better than a pseudonym, so I'm keeping it.

I was wondering who your publisher is, I have a book of poems, I have been trying to get published for over 12 years, my manuscript is just sitting in the book case, collecting dust. If you can help that would be great. Congrats on the book, I will try to order one too!! Thanks.

Poetry's tough, not impossible but tough. There are very specific expectations of it, none of which I like, to be honest. It will hard going , but it's not impossible to find a publisher for poems. I'd say get yourself a Writer's Market and be prepared to lick envelopes until your tongue bleeds and you'll end up on top sooner or later if the work is right for somebody. It's not always about good or bad, it's about compatibility. Always remember that when querying anything. Crap shows up in print because somebody wants that kind of thing. Good work shows up in print because somebody wants it there, if you remember this and don't get discouraged too easily you could find somebody. I'm sitting on a book of poems myself and it hurts that it might never see print, but someday I'll do something about it.

And pumpkin Queen, it might be easier to try and get the poems published seperately in different books full of loads of people poems.

Tonight's the night we're gonna make it happen
Tonight we'll put all other things aside
Get in this time and show me some affection
We're goin' for those pleasures in the night

I want to love you, feel you, wrap myself around you
I want to squeeze you, please you, I just can't get enough
And if you move real slow I let it go

I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
I'm about to lose control and I think I like it
I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
And I know I know I know I know I know I want you

We shouldn't even think about tomorrow
Sweet memories will last for long long time
We'll have a good time, Baby, don't do worry
And if we're still playin' around boy that's just fine

Let's get excited, we just can't hide it
I'm about to lose control and I think I like it
I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
I know I know I know I know I know I want you, I want you

I want to love you, feel you, wrap myself around you

I'm 25. I started my first novel at 16 and have been pounding the pavement query wise since 18, when I got an encouraging rejection from Exquisite Corpse, which 7 years later was the first place I got a story into print. If it weren't for the fact that I can't get a day job to save my life, I'd have been caught up in trying to do that, too, but instead my girlfriend and I have had to gypsy around on just faith, love and the occasional nod of encouragement. It's not going to get easy, but it will get easiER. You should check out http://www.ralan.com. It's a bazaar of genre markets, big, medium and small that you might find a niche at. Also, don't be afraid of small presses. Everybody wants the advance, but the fact is that an advance is only borrowing money from your future self anyway. Royalties are slow, but they're money and they get you noticed.

I have finished reading Murderland I - h8 and I pronounce it very good. It's exciting, it's twisted, it's engossing, thought provoking, enjoyable, wickedly bizarre.

It's not a perfect novel, but it's his first. I am ready to read the next volume. When does it come out?

On a side note, your publisher desperately needs a proofreader. There are spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, words left out here and there... it's not your fault, Doc, I realize, but every time I see an error in print it bugs me.

I give this book a solid 83% out of 100- with 100 reserved for the likes of Bradbury, Vonnegut & Ellison. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I will write a revue for Amazon & my blog soon.

I wholeheartedly agree. I typed up the editor's comments myself and I probably could have used a third opinion somewhere along the line. As small press books get more profitable, there are more human resources. Life During Wartime (yes, named for the Talking Heads song) comes out in October.

Just got that shirt the other day. I'm glad there's more Joker merchandise on account of the movie. I almost just wore a black t-shirt, but my girlfriend saw a Harley shirt at Hot Topic and she wanted us to match, which was really cute of her. And thanks for the compliment on the reading. Hey thanks for the advice on getting a publisher for my poems, Doc Faustus. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I don't get discouraged easily, and I am prepared that my poems may never see print, but I am hopeful that someday, they just might. Some people die, before they make the best seller list and their book makes them famous, I however, will not be one of those, I plan to be famous first, then die with a best seller under my belt, first, ha ha!! Only time will tell, we'll see what happens. Take care and thanks again for the advice, I will definitely keep it in mind!!

Glad to help. The work I've been doing on Writer's Cafe has made me think about doing a book of poems, but I'd like to get them illustrated. I had all these grisly poems I've been working on and one I wrote yesterday that I thought might be cool in a nice little book.

That's great!! In High School, I took creative writing. I loved it because we were given topics to write about. Since I have no topics, I have writers block now and it's bad!! We had to think of a pen name that only the teacher and the student would know, that way when we handed in the poem to be read aloud, no one knew who wrote it, therefore they could not be ridiculed. Our pen names had to be a real name and the last name a descriptive word for your writing. I chose Maggie Sorrows, because all my poems were deeply depressing. If I ever get published, I just might keep that, so watch out for me, someday I may be famous!! Good luck with your poems. If you ever get your poems published let me know, I would love to read them.

*bumps*

GC - I finished your book and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it (which actually means a lot; I have SERIOUS reading ADD and if I can't get into a book, it gets put down immediately).

Doc creates a vivid and macabre world of the gothic, the grotesque, and the surreal. It's a look inside a serial killer stuck in a society crazed by killings and death. He invents a whole new pop culture ("Reap Culture") in which famous killers are revered and have become a part of society.

You can buy it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Murderland-Part-I-Garrett-Cook/dp/1439200815/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222101650&sr=8-2

DO IT. It's a good read.

I have only two pieces of criticism:

This has been mentioned before, but sometimes the editing is a little sketchy (not YOUR fault - This is what editors are for). But, honestly, since this is told through stream of consciousness, it's not that big a deal.
Jeremy's diary entry - I LOVE the insight into his diary, but the language that he uses at 15 (especially since the diary entry starts with him questioning the meaning of a 5-dollar word) seems a little unbelievable. I'd expect the 15-year-old Jeremy voice and tone to be different than our present-day narrator. That being said, I wish that there were more diary entries. I want more. MORE.

Anyway. The last page of the book advertises Murderland Part II: Any idea when that'll be available?

Also - I should probably mail the book over to sign before you get too important for the little people. ;) You won't be offended if the cover's a little bent and has kitten bite marks on it, would you?

One of the good things about online shopping is the availability of books from small presses, but I'd (obviously and not just for selfish reasons) like to see more room on the shelves of bookstores for them. Shelfspace is harder to get than plutonium. I just never got into online shopping myself. Probably because when I shop, I enjoy the hunt.
