Nu Image/Millennium will remake "Red Sonja" with Rose McGowan in the title role, with Robert Rodriguez producing along with Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta and George Furla.
Pic will be presented by Rodriguez and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski from David White's script.
Pic's set to begin lensing in October.
Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Luke Lieberman and Dynamite Entertainment prexy Nick Barrucci are exec producing.
"Red Sonja" is based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas. Story centers on a young girl overcoming tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time as she seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family and discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers.
Millennium's Davidson said the "Sonja" project is designed to build on branded properties similar to its development of "Conan," "Hercules" and "The Three Musketeers."
The 1985 version of "Red Sonja" starred Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
