Ok guys - here's another "give me a hand" thread.

As some of you might know, I'm graduating high school this year, in about 10 days. I'm not going off to university just yet: I'm staying home for a year to work / accumulate money / get some of my many film projects off the ground / build an acting resume / ect.

But on top of all that, I have another major goal for this year. Like many of you, I have a pretty decent sized DVD collection...it's nothing compared to a lot of the folks around here, but it's still a pretty solid size.

Now, my problem - and I've gotten a lot better then I used to be - is that I buy far, far more movies than I have time to watch. Therefore, a whole bunch of movies have accumulated on my shelves that I've never even taken out of the case.

My goal? I want to have watched everything that I own before I go away to school in about a year + a month. It should be more than doable...I mean, there are a lot, but it's a manageable number for sure. I'd shudder to think what Urge or Zwoti's list of unseen films must looks like...yikes.

Anyway, if I post the list here, would you guys be willing to skim through it and suggest some that I bump to the top of the pile? It would be highly appreciated!

List to come shortly...

The Hitcher, The Ninth Gate, This is Spinal Tap, and Raising Arizona need to be moved up for sure. So many good ones you haven't seen though... it's hard to choose.

I'm really, really pumped to watch that, actually - I grew up watching re-runs of the Adam West TV show and I'm dying to catch some of that again.

My girlfriend adores that movie, so we're waiting for a chance to watch it together...cant wait.

That movie is like, cursed for me. I've sat down to watch it about 3-4 times, but something ALWAYS interrupts me before I can even get it started.

I guess I should make it a priority...again, haha.

Thats a solid plan - go right ahread:)

Nevermind what to watch first.
Buy portable dvd players and one that is waterproof.
Put them everywhere...the car, the shower, in front of the toilet....

Theme nights. You gotta have theme nights. Get your Bond out of the way. Doctor No , Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice are a great triple feature. Next, work on the Hammer Box. Kiss and Brides go well together, Nightmare is kinda crappy. Then work on your noirs. I believe in you. You can do this. My girlfriend and I once watched the fifty horror classics over a long weekend and still got stuff done. Pace yourself and don't be a hero. There will be days you're doing nothing. You're an artist taking a year off from college. It will not be hard to find movie time. Trust me on this.

You need to drop what you're doing right now and watch Apocalypse Now. Whatever expectations you may have about the film will be shaken and you will experience an escapism you have never felt before while watching a movie. It isn't a war movie, despite what Blockbuster tags it as. It stands alone as one of the most ferociously original pieces of filmmaking of any generation.

Also, slide All About Eve, Lawrence of Arabia, White Heat, The Philadelphia Story, Rain Man, and Near Dark to the top of your list.

Pretty much everyone has given great recommendations, especially Apocalypse Now and The Wild Bunch.

The only recommendation that I can really add is to take number 159, The Fog (2005) and move it slowly away from the dvd player...don't let it come close, you may be tempted, but no...don't let it happen. For the love of god, don't let it happen.

The only reason I haven't watched that one yet is because I got it in my head that I should read Heart of Darkness first...can't get through that book for the life of me. Conrad makes Lovecraft look like Dean Koontz...

I think I'll just give up on the stupid book and watch Apocalypse Now really soon. I've put ot off way too long :)

When I have a lot of movies piled up that I haven't watched yet, I separate them into 2 piles

1) Movies that might not be so great
2) Movies I think I'll really like

I watch the not-so-good movies first, then save the best for last...That way the possibly bad movies don't seem AS bad (like if Britney Spears had to follow Children Of Bodom, she would suck so much harder :p)...and the good ones, are even better :)

Then, when I get to the good ones...I close my eyes, reach into the pile, and we watch whatever I pull out...Makes it kinda fun

At the moment my DVD collection is abysmal. Good DVDs, but there are only about 20. Seriously, when I get a job, my lifes goal is to get a DVD collection that big. Watching them, I'll think about later!

I have over 300 DVDs but for the most part I have seen mostly all of them either in the theatre, on TV, on the actual DVD itself. I do have a few....maybe 5-10 that I have never seen.

I agree, Ford Fairlane is hilarious, at least I think it is. You have to admit though Elvis... the movie is an acquired taste. I've watched it with plenty of people who just look at me confused through most of it.

Yeh, I've seen countless films, but have very few at my disposal. When I get a job you bet your cotton socks I'll get a big collection.

This is awesome guys, thanks a ton!

My first order of business is to finish off Twin Peaks, which shouldn't take me past the end of the week...then as soon as that's out of the way I'll start digging in to some recommendations :D

Here are some additions:

216. Roma
217. Satyricon

219. Glengarry Glen Ross
220. L.A. Confidential
221. Road House
222. Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead
223. The Nin9s
224. Hot Fuzz
225. Dogma

I never got into LA Confidential it was always just a lot of hype to me.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead and Bug were two of the best flicks I've seen in awhile.

Road House is a pretty fun watch from what I remember. I was thinking of grabbing it the other day. Sam Elliot and Ben Gazzara are great in it and The Jeff Healey band fuckin' rock in it. The final fight scene always stood out to me cuz it had some brutal shit in it. It should stand out as a really good B-Movie that I'm looking forward to revisiting.

I liked Hot Fuzz too but it seems to get a mixed reaction from people. Timothy Dalton looks like he's having a lot of fun as the villain anyways.

I caught the first half hour or so of it on TV last summer when I was on vacation and it seemed like a damn fun movie. Couldn't resist when I saw it in the bargain bin for $3, haha.

I've only seen one Fellini myself, Nights of Cabiria. Likewise, I loved it - hence why I picked up a few more :)
