I despise walmart. Its like taxes, you hate it, but it seems to be necesarry. I was in there this morning when they did their little motivational morning talk....

Never has a company done so much research into keeping their employees happy and then fucked them up and driven them into the ground. they were one of the first companies to refer to their employees (yes EMPLOYEES!) as associates. They arent your friends, they work for you. They are employed by you, not associated with you. Assholes.

And hooray for the door greeters. Nothing like an akward moment of being stared down by an old person who doesnt want to say hi, then watching their eyes dart away when you look back at them. Some are nice, and i get a kick out of it when they give Lily a sticker (she goes nuts), but most of the time, it makes things uncomfortable the second you walk in.

Bree worked for walmart for a year. One of the "special needs" people they employed as a cart fetcher took a liking to her, and every visit after that we were accosted by him coming over and shouting "HI BREE! HOW ARE YOU! ARE YOU STILL WORKING AT WAL MART!" No offense but jesus christ....

"They have LCD TVs for HALF the other places!" Do they have sony, panasonic or any other brands that get great reviews? No, just some not quite off brand? Damn.

They are also magnets for white trash. Almost as bad as a dollar store, its not like they are packed wall to wall with the cream of the crop of the human race. Fat bitchy women, skinny bitchy women, screaming kids. And lets not forget the one one town over from me where there are greasy looking middle aged men who stare at little girls like they are strippers....

God i hate walmart...

Don't shop there.

I haven't been in one for at least 5 years (actually I think it was 7 years ago?)

somehow i read this as ferret catcher

i was thinking - what the fuck does walmart need with a ferret catcher - and why the hell would they give that job to a special needs person..

personally i like walmart for DVDs - and thats about it.
I go there maybe once every couple of months.

i like being the only person in a crowd not wearing sweatpants.

I hear anti-Walmart rants all the time and when the real information wains, it often comes out to yelling at the poor for being poor. Yeah, Walmart sucks, but so too does our economy, so too does our job market and so too does our ability to take care of other human beings. So, until America actually gives a shit about its lower middle and lower class, Walmart will be the only place a lot of people can shop. Not their fault. Not their fault for being poor. Maybe their fault for being greasy and weird, but it's not their fault for being poor or freaks. If you can afford not to shop with freaks, I recommend it. If you can't, don't scorn them for their poverty.

Unfortunately we can't really avoid Wal-Mart....its pretty much the only place here. Wait, there is a BiLo.....which is ridiculously overpriced, and also doesn't have everything we need. Every other place is either too small, and again doesn't have what we need....OR we have to drive an hour to get there. So the trip to Wal-Mart is inevitable.

But they have some really good deals on DVDs. :) And really, its not as bad as all that here as long as you avoid going on the weekends, then its a bit like being sucked into hell.

Yeah, but it's a catch-22. They treat their customers (who are often poor or needy, lower-class) like shit. They skimp out on healthcare and other such benefits and compromise fair treatment for low prices.

I recommend this:

I haven't shopped a Wal*Mart for three years, and don't plan to ever again.

I'm sure in some cases that's true but my aunt actually works there, I believe she started in the seafood department or bakery, now she makes six figures, hell a year ago she was making over 80k a year there and she gets good benefits too. Maybe the people not making enough or getting food benefits just aren't doing that good of a job...

Their anti-competitive tactics are legendary.

As someone who supports free enterprise, I will never go there.

I personally don't shop there because of the things they choose to do. They only sell edited CDs, they stopped selling a BBQ sauce because the guy who owned the company flew the confederate flag over his SOUTHERN BASED plant, and also their anti-competitive tactics like you mentioned. I remember hearing one about pickles once... really pissed me off.

For the record, I wasn't advocating shopping at Walmart. I was pointing out that there are very few alternatives for the lower middle class. They're brutal to distributors, who end up not being able to sell product to smaller grocery stores, who therefore can't afford to put certain items on sale as often. My stepfather worked as frozen manager at a small grocery store and was told by distributors all the time that they couldn't give them items at sale price because Walmart had them on sale. So, perhaps on account of your Walmart, Meijer and stores like it people can't shop anywhere but, so ranting about the social strata of Walmart shoppers doesn't make al that much sense.

you're gonna love Murderdoll's take on it.

I wouldn't say i rant about it - and as i'm in canada on the outskirts of toronto - it's not like we have hillbilly freaks running around ... (any more than any other large departmant store) - i'll just say it's more noticeable to me because i work in a corporate office environment all week so its a bit of a culture shock when i do see a large gathering of rural folk. (its not neccessary an socio-economics thing ... its definately an urban VS rural thing - which in this case is slightly different.

as far as evil business practices go ... i cant name a single honest company, or one that treats all of its employees fairly.

a store isnt bad - its a building. there are some bad people running these stores in some cases ... but there are also a lot of people working in them that may not be able to work anywhere else -
if you can think of a strategy that hurts the top tier greedy bastards making the antisocial business decisions without hurting the employees that work there - then more power to you.

- a couple of people not shopping there - it has no effect
- everyone not shopping there - puts a lot of unskilled people out of work.

Well, every time I've been to america (4 times so far) I have LOVED wal*mart. Seriously, we don't have supermarkets that big with that much stuff in here. Sure, we have a small electricals department and a few tools, but mainly just food, a few toys and different discs (CD's, DVD's, etc.) Wal Mart has everything you could ever need to live, and the great thing is, if I take what would only be £20 in england, it's $40!

Of course, I can see the bad sides of it too. But oh well!

I go to wal-mart for dvds only.I hate going there cause the place is always packed.I come from a very small town and all we have is a wal-mart and a k-mart.And it's a very redneck town.So when I go there I always see some skinny dirty yokel and his 700lb wife sweating bullets through her moo moo and creeping by on her rascal scooter.Glad I only go there about twice a month.

That's the point. There's a reason they have such low prices- what's making you happy is compromising another's way of life.

Won't shop there anymore. I'm stricktly a Target person now. I get all my baby stuff, groceries, and whatever else I need there. It may cost a little more, but saves SO much stress. Every time I have left Walmart in the past I have left there in a pissy mood and argueing with the significant other about something or another. And it seems like no matter what, even if you pick the shortest line in the 4 out of 35 that are actually open, it takes no shorter than 30 minutes to get through the checkout.
The main thing that got me to stop shopping there was last Easter we had to run in and get a few things. A mother and her 2 teenage kids were checking out in front of us and tryng to pay with a food stamp card. It worked for just about everything except this precooked ham they had. Now from my understanding the food stamp cards don't work on ANY precooked food of ANY kind....but they ended up just giving it to her for free. This lady with her teenege kids, ALL 3 of them dressed very nicely and not looking like they need any assistance (and by the way got into a brand new SUV in the parking lot) got all of their groceries for free from Walmart...even what they weren't supposed to.

I would avoid that particular Wal Mart.

I think Wal Mart is good for cheep movies and cheep T shirts...maybe the occasional pillow or beverage. They have a trashy feel that I like so every once in a great while, I'll go there.

The rest of the time I'll go to Target, for slightly nicer stuff. I got a DVD player at Target a while ago, and it's been working very nicely. I bought a TV at Target well over TEN YEARS ago, and I still have it and it's still working perfectly. I bought my Alvin and the Chipmunks DVD at Target.

Yes Walmart is the devils playground and I have said in this forum many many times how I hate this place..even thinking about the fact that I really have to food shop real soon or we will all be eating the 5 year old can of Ravioli, makes my stomach hurt (and we have the old man that glares as we enter...what joy)

BUT, If you, like me live in a small piss town you have no other option except the overpriced mini marts and the Piggly Wiggly were you most likely will get shot.
We have a Food Lion but they stock out of date organic milk(at almost $4 I must add) and I NEVER see Rice milk there and with their asshole checkers....they can all kiss my (somewhat so far) tan ass.

In my town even the doctors wives shop Wallys or they hire their maid/ nanny/ unplugthestickuptheirass person to drive up to Raleigh and shop the Whole Foods.

So, what does a person like me who is not in the least one of the inbreeds you people say shop there?

I do buy as many products that I can that I know who do no(well..not much) evil.
And that's my only option till Target gets a bigger grocery section.:(
