Summit Entertainment will produce a remake of fantasy thriller "Highlander" with the aim of kick-starting the franchise.
Summit's signed the "Iron Man" writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to script, with plans to expand on the original pic's premise of immortals battling each other for a mysterious prize.
Company's aiming to go into production next year.
Patrick Wachsberger, Summit's co-chairman and president, said, "I have always dreamed of reinventing this franchise."
Summit production prexy Erik Feig told Daily Variety that the new pic will mix contemporary settings, action, mythology and medieval Scotland.
"We think the franchise will work on a global basis," he added.
Summit acquired the remake rights from Davis/Panzer Prods. It has tapped Peter Davis, one of the producers of the original film, to produce the new version.
The 1986 original was directed by Russell Mulcahy and starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Roxanne Hart. It launched four sequels and three TV spinoffs.
In addition to "Iron Man," Marcum and Holloway also wrote "Convoy" for Par.
Summit has been ramping up operations for the past year from a sales operation into a full-fledged studio with development, financing, production and distribution. It's focused on projects budgeted in the middle range and plans to release 10-12 films annually. Recent pics include "Sex Drive" and Alexander Proyas' "Knowing," currently shooting with Nicolas Cage starring.

I still love the original film. Never got into the TV series. It seems too soon to remake it, but maybe it just seems that way to me because I'm getting old. Over 20 years doesn't seem like all that long, now...

i like certain elements of the 1st one ..
i've often said that it's one of the worst edited movies i've ever seen.
the only sequence that works is the 'who wants to live forever' montage (that shows his wife aging as connor remains young.)
the rest of the film is a choppy mess.
i dont think it needs to be remade, it needs to be recut.
a remake is the next best thing - but i cant picture this film without the queen score - especially the forementioned song.

I really like the original but I agree wholeheartedly about the score. I can't imagine Highlander without "Princes of the Universe".

i loved it when it first came out - but when i rewatched it recently with my son - it really jumped out - how poorly the movie flows.

What? You can't remake Highlander. There can be only one.

Neither can I.....:(
Highlander is one of those films I love in spite of its problems, because it has a lot of them.....;)
Not too crazy about the thought of a remake, but no surprise there.

Four actually, if you count The Source.....and a television show (which I actually like), but many of us would just love to pretend they don't exist....you know, kind of like how almost everyone involved with Highlander 2: The Quickening just pretends it never happened.....;)

Summit Entertainment has tapped Justin Lin to direct and Neal H. Moritz to produce its reboot of “Highlander,” aiming at turning the title into a franchise.
Lin and Moritz teamed on Universal’s “Fast & Furious.” Summit acquired the “Highlander” remake rights from Davis-Panzer Prods. in May, 2008.
“Iron Man” screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are penning the script and longtime “Highlander” producer Peter Davis is also producing.
Summit’s plans to expand on the original “Highlander” premise of immortals battling amongst us and hunting each other through the ages. The new pic centers on an immortal Scottish swordsman who must confront a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for a fabled prize.
Lin’s helming credits include “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and “Better Luck Tomorrow.” Moritz and his Original Film banner are producing the upcoming “Flash Gordon” and “The Green Hornet.”

I was a huge fan when this came out 23 or so years ago. I thought the premise was very original....didn't pay much attetion to editing back then...
Definitely agree it needs the Queen score.

Agree 100% on both. Clancy Brown made the movie as the Kurgen.

4 I believe and they all sucked major balls. Although I could actually tolerate End Game because it had Connor and Duncan in it, but the others blew imo.

Ughhhh....Highlander 2 was the worst. I too liked the series, I thought Adrian Paul was perfect for the role. Had the look, very athletic. The series had quite a few interesting evil immortals too.

Any early word on who will be starring in this movie? Any suggestions on who should play Connor or the Kurgen?
How about Gerrard Butler or maybe Hugh Jackman as Connor MacLeod...?

I wouldn't want it to be re-made...unless Butler did it and I'd even buy the dvd.

The 1st Highlander film is one of my favorites. The final fight scene is also one of my favorite scenes of all time. I just love the way the camera moves and the lighting and shadow, the wet look with the blue hues. Just so visually appealing to me.
That said. I have ZERO interest in a Remake and even less interest in Ryan Reynolds being in it. I'd rather watch Highlander: The Source again...and that was pretty bad.
Actually I'd really like to see Adrian Paul make a Highlander movie with a good budget and good screenwriting but that will never happen.
