I've been enjoying the games on the forum so much that I decided I wanted to do one, too.

If enough people want to play, we can make this work.

Anyone who's on can play. Points will carry over for each person, for each round they play in. Those who play most often, will likely accrue the most points.

This is based on the game 'Scattergories', but it will be horror-based.

It's a very simple game.

These are the official rules for Scattergories, but I have changed them slightly to suit horror-based forum play:

The objective of the game is to score points by uniquely naming movies or objects within a set of categories, given an initial letter.

Gameplay

Each 'challenge' has 12 categories.

The letter that the answers can start with will be determined by alphabetical order.

Each player must attempt to think of and write down a word, term or horror movie title that fits each of the 12 categories and starts with the chosen letter. Send them to me in a PM, and don't tell anyone what you have submitted until after all of the entries have been tallied.

Any number of words in the answer is allowed, as long as the first word starts with the correct letter (Articles 'A', 'An' and 'The' are to be ignored).

For example, with a category of "Slasher" and a letter of "S", titles such as "Scream", "The Secretary" and "Sleepaway Camp" are acceptable, but "Nightmare On Elm Street" is not (wrong initial letter), nor is "Silence Of The Lambs" (wrong category). Alliteration (using the chosen letter more than once) is encouraged; Scarecrow Slayer is worth 2 points.

Players score zero points for an answer that duplicates another answer in that round, and one point for an answer no other player has given.

Acceptable answers using alliteration score one point for each word using the letter.

For example, in the "S-Slasher" example, if players A, B, and C answered "Scream", "Scream", and "Slash" , respectively, players A and B would score nothing, and C would score 1 point.

If for some reason a player thinks someone's answer does not fit the category (for instance, "Serial Mom" for the category "Slasher") a player may challenge that answer. When challenged, all players vote on the validity of that answer. If the vote is a tie, the player's vote who is being challenged is thrown out.

So...If anyone wants to do this, I'll create the first list.

until it gets too time consuming ....The good thing about this one is, you can choose to play a round or not...First person to score 100 points wins the game...Then another game starts if people still want to play :)

Okay, I'll make up the first one.

It's okay, the first round is almost always for working out the bugs...Kinda like a test round :)

I want to remind everyone about ignoring the articles 'A', 'An', and 'The' also...Like 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' wouldn't count for 'A', but 'The Awakening' would

I know, I had one almost like that, and just scraped it, I only did one deliberate double, but I made it sound nicer than just grasping for description.

It makes it a little easy, though of course anything can be challenged.

Okay so wait I am confused about the next round because since we have been scoring high each round how will we find out who gets to 100 first. We need to give Neverending and myself a fair chance at winning....:)

That's only because it was the only one with two N's. :)

So do you agree NE that we should set a time for the next challenge? So we both have a fair chance at winning because it is 3AM here and if I stay up later I will probably sleep until after 4PM tomorrow EST and if they do it at Noon without me knowing I won't be able to make plans to ensure that I am awake when it starts.

EDIT: Okay this was written before I saw Rayne's post. So I guess that I will be losing then because I know if it is done tomorrow around noon or anything I won't be around or awake. :)

Not to take anything away from the innovators...

...but awarding a buncha points to long phrases would make the contest a totally one-sided or two-sided affair.

If it was only 1 point per entry, (or maybe 2-3 points per same name, or movie title) it would be a much fairer and equal chance-giving game.

Someone like Rod or Urge or Newb would have no chance against NE or Gore at anytime.

(For eg, compare Rod's "minivan" to NE's "mashed into a macular mostly threadbare madid maliferous maroon macinaw covered in mazy mazut")

Just a thought.

Okay then, I'll compromise

From here on out there is a 3-point limit for each answer...You can make your answer as long as you like, but the maximum amount you can gain for any single answer is 3 points.

That still allows someone the potential to win a game by taking any 4 rounds.

Fair enough?

Personally, I think it takes away what makes the game fun, interesting and unique. That's JUST ME though.

However, I don't see some other people here that are running games listening to complaints that the game is "too hard."

Just an observation....

I get a 2 or 3 word answer, but anything more than that is really reaching. It takes far greater creativity to come up with a short answer that no one else has thought of than to string together an alliterative mess.

Dont take me wrong here, Rayne or NE. I wasn't complaining.

Personally, I read the thread from the beginning and saw it was a great neck-on-neck start. But as soon as the long phrases came in, the ones like Despare (who had actually won a game) was left far behind.

True, it makes the game fun and innovative...for those who can think and act fast and quickly. But to accomodate all those who are interesting in playing but can't keep up with the long phrasing, it would be a bit tough, and mentally draining. That was a main reason why I, myself, skipped through most of it.

But it's your game, Rayne...so please conduct it as you deem fit. Think of me as just another casual observer, who had an input which didnt amount to much.

Carry on, please. You wont hear anything more from me.

The game is ABOUT aliterative messes!

But the hostess has spoken, so the point is moot.

pretty much what i was thinking .. a lot of the phrases are stretching it - to the point where they were meaningless.

mangled meathook ? you might as well go mangled mauve metal mighty muddy meathook ...

all you end up with is a bunch of nonsensical alphabetical descriptors

(mind you - that could be a fun game in itself)

Excerpt from the OFFICIAL Scattergories rules:

When using alliterations, remember to follow the category. You cannot use generic adjectives to score points. For example, if the category is food and the letter is G, a good answer would be 'green grapes' because green is the specific variety of grape. Germy grapes, giant grapes, or Georgia grapes would not work, since they are generic ideas and not really names of foods. Writing a bad answer is still better than no answer because there is always the possibility that the group playing will accept the answer.

I left out that part to allow for more creativity and diversity...So, I think that allowing the addition of unnecessary adjectives (and even adverbs in some cases), while putting a 3-point cap on the answers, is a fair compromise...Agreed?
