John Cusack has signed on to topline Roland Emmerich’s apocalyptic thriller “2012” for Columbia Pictures.

“Redbelt” star Chiwetel Ejiofor also is in talks to join the big-budget epic, whose title refers to the end days of human civilization as foretold by the ancient Mayan calendar.

Story kicks off with a global cataclysm, which brings an end to the world as we know it, and chronicles the heroic struggle of the survivors.

Emmerich and Harald Kloser penned the screenplay, which Sony bought in February.

Shooting will begin in July in Los Angeles, barring a Screen Actors Guild strike.

Mark Gordon, Kloser and Larry Franco are producing. Emmerich is exec producing.

Cusack, who most recently starred in the horror film “1408,” will next be seen in satire “War, Inc.,” which he also wrote and produced. He is currently shooting “Shanghai” for the Weinstein Co.

Ejiofor, whose recent credits include “Talk to Me” opposite Don Cheadle, recently wrapped Danny Glover’s historical drama “Toussaint,” also opposite Cheadle.

Independence Day helmer Roland Emmerich's latest multi-million dollar mega-project 2012 is now gearing up for production, with three more actors joining the cast.

We already knew that John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor were on board, and now The Hollywood Reporter informs us that the like of Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), Thandie Newton (Run Fatboy, Run) and Oliver Platt have also signed up for this apocalyptic drama.

Glover is in talks to play the President, Newton his daughter and Platt the White House Chief of Staff.

2012 revolves around Mayan prophecies that foretell the end of the world in the year 2012 – with doppelgangers and familiar sounding Crystal Skulls all involved.

Assuming the mooted actors strike doesn't go ahead, filming will begin this summer - in line for a June 10, 2009 worldwide release.
