It looks like [REC], the Spanish horror flick that has been terrifying audiences all over Europe this year, is about to get the sequel treatment.
Spain's Filmax is currently promoting REC 2 in Cannes, with directors Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza again attached to direct.
According to Screen Daily, there's no word on cast, budget or start date, but the filmmakers have revealed that the sequel will retain the original's "claustrophobic concept", with the horror again seen through the lens of a handheld camera.
As for the original [REC], although the film is yet to be released in America, it has already been remade under the title Quarantine, with John Erick Dowdle directing and Jay Hernandez starring.

The first [REC] was just awesome. I've heard they're making a sequel, does anyone have any further information about it?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I STILL NEED TO SEE THE FIRST MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
This is actually a subject of strife for me... The Boyfriend wants to see Quarantine in the theaters but I REFUSE TO until I watch [rec], so every time he sees an ad for Quarantine and he points at it and looks at me with those little puppy dog eyes and I think with unadulterated internal struggling, "My GOD why must I be such an ellitist intellectual sexy purist?!" and then I say, "Maybe, Boyfriend, maybe"... I feel slightly more dead inside...
...
SO
Anyone know when it's supposed to be released on the US shores?

This is a terrible idea. I don't see it working that flick was a one of deal to me.
There's a thread somewhere with more details.

Chrono, I can send you a link where you can watch it streamed online. Quality isn't 100%, but it's more than passable - and well worth it.

thats a terrible way to see a film - especially this film for the 1st time ..
keep looking - or check ebay. (my copy is some other region - unless you have a multi region player its no good to you.
but dont watch it hunched over a computer monitor ... see it on a decent screen with decent sound .... on the couch in the dark.

Actually Urge, most DVD players can have a code input with the remote that unlocks it for all regions. My old Phillips worked just fine I've watched The Brave and Phantasm R2 dvds on it.
As far as a sequel goes, maybe it will be more of a prequel explaining the origins of the "disease", dealing with religion some, and eventually tracking it to the condos. That would destroy anybody's hopes for a US sequel since in Quarantine they erased any trace of religion.

yeah some of the older models could be firmware hacked ...
there's a site or two that tells you which ones ... but some of them are board mods - a pain in the ass.
I did my Apex a few years ago - but the poor workhorse is at end of life .. i need another one badly ..
something region free that handles pal as well as ntsc

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release [Rec] on July 14th (http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/uhm/showthread.php?t=44635) in both Spanish and English-dubbed versions. So far the only special feature is a making-of featurette.

Yeah, Quarantine came out a few weeks ago, I saw that. It was okay, but the "heroine" got on my nerves. I heard the original was so much better, so looking forward to it.

Seriously. I thought she would step up, but there was just so much crying and whining. I think if she had taken a little more action and asserted herself more, I would have been more impressed with the film overall. It started off nice though.

Allow me to be a very bad horror fan here for a sec - but I'm honestly not looking forward to this.
[REC] is a movie that has no need for a sequel. Although the viewer is left with a ton of unanswered questions, that's half of the appeal. It's a classic rule of horror: the more you know about what's going on, the less scary it becomes. Besides, I'm having a hard time figuring out how they plan to plausibly continue the story without ruining a significant part of the original's ending.
I'll likely still give it a look at some point because the first one is a modern horror masterpiece...but I wont be joining the countdown.
Hmmm.... Not sure on the sequel. I just watched the original Spanish version a few days ago, and enjoyed it.
Though admittedly it seemed like they just mixed the Blair Witch Project with 28 Days Later, and made a movie that way. It worked quite well though I thought, and was pleasantly surprised.

Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza's "Rec 2" will open the 42nd Sitges Intl. Film Festival of Catalonia, Europe's biggest genre pic devotee confab.
A strong international seller and genre cult item, "Rec" inspired a U.S. remake, the Screen Gems-produced "Quarantine," helmed by John Erick Dowdle.
Again produced by Barcelona-based mini-major Filmax Ent., the eagerly awaited "Rec 2" picks up "Rec's" story 15 minutes later.
95 days and counting...
i'm with return - why does everything have to be explained in a sequel??

This is looking good. First [Rec] is a hard act to follow, but this looks like its going to be good entertainment, even if it doesn't manage to live up to the high standard of the first. I like the idea of following the story on directly rather than going off at a tangent or trying to recreate a 'different' scenario which is ultimatley the same. If they get it right it should be a good film in its own right without having to compete with the first.
