I know this sounds so stupid, but I did this the other week when my depression was really fighting to win me over.
I searched the internet for Fabulous Snickerdoodle...picked out a recipe and had me and the girls baked like 20 batches.
After eating ALOT of it, we then wrapped the remaining and handed it out to whoever we thought of (teachers, fellow students, some nice neighbors, the old crazy guy looking for butts at Walgreens, etc etc)
I swear it made me feel better.
Also realize that your kitty had the best luck by getting to spend it's life with you guys.:)

That's so sad. I'm sorry. I have a fear if this happening to my cat because it seems like there is another one hit in my complex every day, so she doesn't go out. People just don't watch for animals like they should.

It sounds stupid, it sounds trite, it sounds insincere, but I'll tell you: these things will pass. Stay calm, attract the positive, and remember that by having loving children and the support of friends, you have more than a lot of others do already. It sucks losing a pet and for your kids, it's going to be hard, but something's waiting for you and I guarantee it isn't revving up a chainsaw. Unless you like sexy lumberjacks. Then, it might be.

I feel for you.
I had to have my kitty named Torti put to sleep due to an aneurism.

I was upset for two months after until I got my two new ones, Beau & Bucky.

Sorry to hear about your cat, that is a horrible way to lose a pet. I hope you have cheered up by now..
But cats have to get out, it's in there nature, unfortunatley crossing roads isn't.
