A topic which has been talked about in sporadic bursts and moments. Its good to have its own thread.

So...do you like em?

I have a pretty good list of movies which I actually loved - Platoon, The Longest Day, Where Eagles Dare, The Guns of Navarone, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Das Boot, A Bridge Too Far, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Great Escape, etc.

Most of you know I rank Platoon very highly, and it is in my all-time Top 10 Favs. I felt really close to Charlie Sheen's character, and Tom Berenger as Barnes & Willem Dafoe as Elias really carry the movie from beginning to end on their very powerful characterisations. A more hard-hitting and raw portrayal of the Nam was never done. Hats off to Oliver Stone.

So, which ones have you watched and really liked? And, would you like to recommend any of those?

Not really sure why this is in the ' Modern Horror Movies' section but yeah i'm a big film fan and some of those that i love are war films. so ones i really like (for the weirdest reason):

All Quiet on the Eastern Front: This really set the bar for the horro fil - i really cannot imagine the impact it had on audiences in the 30's. It fucking horrible and hard hitting - the scene with the german soldier spending the night in the fox hole with the guy he killed is harrowing. I love Saving Private Ryan but watch this first and reassess.

Sands of Iwo Jimo: Ok I always though this as a macho pro america flick from my chilhood memories but it far surpasses this. Great film - great depiction of the futility of war and it has judo in it too..

The Eagle has Landed: Ok Donald Suderland as the Irish guy - thats it and i love it..

Where Eagles Dare: Another childhood fave. Clint steals the show to a very entertaining Richard Buton.

I think Apocalypse Now is as powerful as a movie comes. Sheer, gripping suspense adventure, and horrifying war sequences. I love it.

I also like Platton, Patton, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter...

The Great Escape is a blast.

I never think of THE GREAT ESCAPE as a war movie...I love the flick, but for me it falls into the prison-break subgenre of action films... which is another subgenre I dig

hell, I even liked VICTORY which hits the war/prison-break/sports film subgenre (not too many of those, I'm guessin')

Some good war pics mentioned here. Have to put Apocalypse Now at the top. Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon are excellent, too. I also liked Hunt for Red October. Saving Private Ryan was decent. I like some of the classics mentioned here as well - Bridge Over the River Kwai, Dirty Dozen, Guns of Navarone, Big Red One, All Quiet on the Western Front, and even Patton if that qualifies. Love it that someone mentioned Victory. In addition to being in Gallipoli (which many people here seem to like, and I do too) Gibson did a couple of war films that are entertaining in The Patriot and Braveheart - if you can classify those as war pictures- maybe Last of the Mohicans (1992) fits as well. The war/battle scenes at the beginning of Gladiator were awesome, too.

I'm VERY green when it comes to this genre...I could count the war movies I've seen on one hand. Its strange too, because I've enjoyed all the ones that I've seen, just never got around to watching more.

My favourites of what I've seen:

- Full Metal Jacket
- Kelly's Heroes
- Platoon

from imdb

The film opens with a squad of seasoned German soldiers, led by a disillusioned but skilled sergeant, on a patrol on the Russian front in WWII. They return to base to find a new commander, a traditional Prussian officer who wants only one thing from his command - An Iron Cross to maintain his family honor. The scene is set for a graphic portrayal of the horrors of war and of the conflict between two men of differing backgrounds. Written by Michael Lawn (http://uk.imdb.com/SearchPlotWriters?Michael%20Lawn%20%7Bmlawn@attmai l.com%7D)

"Set in 1943 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943) on the Eastern Front (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Front_%28WWII%29) of World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II), Cross of Iron is the story of the class conflict between a newly-arrived, aristocratic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristocratic) officer who covets the Iron Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Cross) and a cynical, hardened infantry platoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platoon) leader in a Wehrmacht (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrmacht) regiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regiment) during the German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Germany) retreat from the Taman Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taman_Peninsula) on the Black Sea coast of the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union). Cross Of Iron is a great flick.

Flight of the Intruder

I really dug this when it first came out but haven't seen it since. I remember it being a lot better than I thought it would be.

Anyone mentioned Saigon or Casualties Of War yet?

Any idea about this...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FX2WBMJ1L._SS500_.jpg

It lies on the shelf of a downtown store I visited yesterday. Looks tempting too...and is priced at about 14 bucks.

Anyone else got it? And if so, how are the movies in it?

i've got the horror and sci-fi ones ... but i think i'd hesitate before getting the war one.

bad horror and sci-fi is passable because they have atheir charms ..

i cant think of anything more tedious than a bad war film.

Not to mention the movies listed are some which I have never heard of, except some such as the Iwo Jima one, Battle of Britain etc...

I ll give it a skip till I get a favorable report.

Gotta admit, some of these 50 movie packs were so tempting that I used to get very impulsive while buying em. Only when I realised that the transfers and pic/audio quality are very shoddy on some, which put me off from buying these for awhile now.
