I definitely agree with you, my dear Fuzzy Bear.

I felt as though, conceptually this should have been a soft ball and that the execution at the beginning was clean, tense, and well-done.

But it quickly melted into typical Stephen King sentimental bullshit (don't get me wrong; I love King, but the man cannot write about the emotional weakness of man without blatantly pandering to the moronic masses) that was emphasized by Hollywood saccharine sensibilities.

Part of what makes me hate 1408 so much is that I feel as though it could have been so, so, SO much better than it ultimately was. But the twist was predictable and the end came muuuuuuuuch too late.

I liked the film just fine but it was never better than the opening warm-up.

Cusack and Jackson's scene near the beginning was the best part of the film for me. Great scene. It's easy enough to use atmospherics, tricks and special effects to convince an audience that "something strange" exists, but to convey the reality of that something through acting and dialogue alone is much more difficult. I thought the scene pulled this off nicely.

i thought it was The Shining all over again substituting an urban hotel for a rural one.

weak and uninteresting - typical for a King adaptation.

(and i dont like Stephen King ... at all)

Lacked any sort of tension or legitimate scares. I didn't mind the movie, it was just sort of boring.

Definitely not his fault. He's a great actor. I blame it on direction and the PG-13 rating. King's book to film adaptations are usually better when rated R.

i find it fascinating that no one called "bullshit" on the guy who started the thread. he was a marine, got attacked by a bear and a gang (the toughest, no less), and none of it scared him even a little?

Bullshit. if he in fact recognizes that those things should be scary, he has experienced some degree of fear surrounding them. WHich generally implies "I know these things are scary, so lets use them as examples of how badass i am by saying i wasnt scared by them".

Was also expecting so much more from this film, was even a little edgy about watching it alone as most films about the supernatural make me prang out to the point that i end up staying up watching Jeremy Kyle all night.

Such a good premise but executed pretty badly, shaaaaaaaaame.

sort of, but no one just said "you could not possibly be what you claim, piss off kid".

Reminded me very much of one little twit that was here a dew years ago who claimed to watch a guy murder his girfriend in the street outside o fhis house, then went and took the knife...
