Seems a lot of people aren't absolutely amazed by the current chapter in the GTA series from what I've read/heard back about.
I mean sure, I'll be grabbing it - I think the current gen/networks ability to d/l additional content will make this a GTA experience unlike any before, not to mention the PVP online games...etc...will be there, along with vehicles we're not used to as yet, a new combat and shooting style, and a new set of characters.
This one actually looks to have a deeper storyline which I think will work in its favour...but yeah...am I expecting a thing of greatness? Not really.
Just another, shinier GTA.
So...thoughts from those that have played and yet to play alike?
I'd love to see a GTA game where you play as a dirty cop, for at least some of the time..

Spent a couple of hours in Liberty City last night......you summed it up pretty good so far......deeper story...shinier GTA. Haven't even got a gun yet and I hear the combat is much improved.....we shall see.

I dont like the controls of this game. The driving is really horrible. And the guy looks like he's gonna fall over when you turn him left and right.
What I've played of the multiplayer last night wasn't to bad.Cops n Crooks was pretty fun.

Exactly what I was expecting.
Will be picking up my copy in a couple days' time.
They really need to introduce some newer, more badass characters with a better storyline.
Maybe GTA V.

Just got a call from the brother in law asking if I got mine yet because multiplayer is amazingly fun without being so slanted toward the hardcore that it makes it almost a chore to play. Another person at work said he loved the single player and it's the best one he played yet. Not only that but that this main character is his favorite so far, but I'll reserve judgment until mine gets here (Friday hopefully). It really seems like people are looking for points to pick at. As is the case with most popular things. You can find any forum or IM conversation about movies, cars, or fighters bustling with activity and people talking about how something is overrated... from Fedor to Sergio Leone.

I'm pretty desperate to play so I've been looking for a PS3 for the past two weeks. Nothing but the 40gb version s around. Boo-urns.

Check in with your Playstation Support centre, in regards to models available - they completely phased one out here, and now we only have the 40gb at present.
If it's backwards compatability you're looking at, don't worry too much, the bc on the original ps3 units was pretty shithouse in all honesty - you'd be better off with a 40gb and a ps2.
...So, seriously, those of us in AU, I wouldn't pick up gta4 just yet...I've had numerous cases of the game stuffing up, and in some cases, stopping the unit from recognising all disk media (to the point it couldn't just be coincidental), right now I think they need a patch but quick, or a product recall.

Yeah I have heard about this as well. It's the reason I haven't bought GTA4 yet.
If it is true, it is a pretty serious fuck up - a game that destroys a $700 console. I will be wanting to see that patch, and wait to be sure that it stops this problem from happening before I try it.

Yep, more info for you here MM.
The game has continued to have ongoing issues on ps3...about 30% of the ps3 related cases I've dealt with have been GTA4 related, and maybe 10% of those seem to have, as Rockstar would obviously like it put "coincidentally had problems at the same time that a console has had a disk reading error"
Riiight.
I say they'll throw up some firmware within the week.
See...this is a problem we're going to have with a lot of games - they'll be far more prone to fucking up, on account of the fallback "we can add firmware" policy I'm sure many a company will adopt in this generation...while rushing out these GREAT games.
Although in all honesty I think that the manufacturing of the PS3 is getting better - I mean there's like 10 models of the slimline ps2 just here, obviously there was a reason for that - but, the good news is, the CECHH02 model (this is the second run of 40GB ps3s of this region, the first was CECHG02), which are the ones that came out with the GTA/GT5P packages, and as I understand it, the ones that'll be shipping from now, are not prone anywhere NEAR as much as the former 2 models to have problems...Looks like they may have overcome the closest thing we had to the red ring of death.

So were all the PS3's shipped in the GT5P pack the later revision? I would be happy if they were, as this the pack that I got. :)

Yeah, I believe so...just check the barcode on the back, if the serial number ends in "cech h02" you've got a "good" one.
ManchestrMorgue
05-06-2008, 02:42 AM
Yeah, barcode on the back ends in CECHH02 so looks like I got the newer one.
Happy I bought from DSE as they had the PS3/GT5P in the official bundle box as opposed the the EB Games near me, which at the time were just selling the standard boxed PS3 and throwing in a copy of GT5P to make up the "bundle", which I would imagine have given a greater chance of getting old stock of the console.
Thanks for that info.

I think the only problem anybody could have with GTA IV is how much they've toned down the violence. This place posted three videos that really show how far Rockstar has gone to be a little "nicer".

for the most part, its just as bad, if not worse in some ways. its definetly pretty damn violent. there are no decapitations like in the previous games, however its still pretty damn violent. niko blasted some dude right in the eye in one cutscene. arterial spray and everything. it was pretty awesome.
they definetly toned up the cursing, as well as the sexual content.
sex with prositutes is really graphic. you can choose between services, and actually watch the action through the car window. :D

So does anyone know if the issues that the PS3 had with this game (i.e., causing the Blu Ray drive to stop working, etc.) have been fixed? I believe there was a recent patch for the game - wondering if this was to rectify these issues.
Phalanx
05-14-2008, 06:23 PM
Yeah, the first patch recently released has stabilised the online play a bit...SEEMS to have lessened the freezing/brd fuck ups...still, not getting the best feedback overall.
More patches to come, of this I'm certain.

If just one thread about consoles could avoid fan-boyism
I mean c'mon, without one, how could you have any perspective?
Are you aware specifically of failure rates and comparative figures thereof, vs sales figures/units sold?
PLEASE don't tell me you're going exclusively on "I heards" and "read on website/forum" information there - of COURSE there's more negative opinions out there, the "public outcry" is never really representative of
a: people that actually OWN a console
b: The REAL case
c: A "large" amount of ANY cases.
...all websites do, really, is get a few negative opinions out there about a product, to a wide audience.
I'm not here defending the system, or, I guess I am to a point.
Like all of them, it's not without problems. They say a 3% failure rate, I'm more inclined to lean towards 5% there...but still, it's a pretty low figure.
"All types of problems" seems a bit of a big statement to make about a console that only really ever encounters one of two problems...

I find it interesting that anybody bitches about problems with a new game, or problems with a new system (especially the first production models, or even glitches in networks. I guess it's because I've always adopted new tech. early and dealt with the problems I suppose. I remember when it was all about the games... even if your system had to have a laser eye or disc drive replaced, or even opened up and resoldered so that damn red light would stop blinking, it had no bearing on the games for that console.
GTA4 rocks pretty damn hard on either console.

I haven't got to play this too much but I love the storylines, especially the one I just finished with Playboy X and Dwayne. Very well done game and with SO much to do.
SPOILER
Here's a quick mission synopsis. A guy owes an employer of yours money but he's hard to get to... and gay. Your cousin sets you up on and internet dating site as looking for a man. You then go to the internet cafe and exchange e-mails with the guy before finally meeting him at a resturaunt for a date and killing him. It plays out really well.

The first Saint's Row was fun but I never picked it up, this next one looks crazy. I just hope the story is good; that's one of the best things about GTA IV, the way the deep story unfolds... and at your leisure too. Volition's a good group so I can see it being really good.
