View Full Version : HDC Weekly Debate #3: Should Religion be binding on each citizen in the society?

_____V_____
04-29-2008, 10:06 AM
Continuing the series...

How big of a role does religion play in shaping our modern society? We all know that religion brings with itself a sense of discipline in daily life and also, a feeling of fellowness and morality in a human being's life cycle in the society.

Should it be bound on every citizen so that they can lead a well-maintained, easy-going and disciplined life...friendly and together with their neighbors, family and friends? Which might eventually lead to peace and contentment within the frameworks of the lifestyles.

Or should it be kept at a distance? Because each person, citizen or not, is born free and will die free, someday...so he/she has the right to choose the type of life he wants to lead.

Also, deeply religious people can become clammy and shut away from the world. We have seen what religious zealots are capable of. And the scientologists...the lesser said, the better.

What about atheism? Aren't many atheists cool people in society?

Are we evolving into a Freudian society eventually? Or will Scientology play a dominant role in the coming years?

The final question which leaves us - Can religion play any sort of role in curbing the sociopathic violence which has been a hallmark of man's descent into all sorts of immoral actions today?

Your take.

Can these things NOT be acheived WITHOUT religion?

Many people have been slaughtered in the name of religion...Many wars have been caused by conflicts between religions

In my opinion...Religion is a very personal thing, based on each individual's deepest, personal, fundamental beliefs...Not everyone believes in the same things, or thinks the same way (which is how it should be), so religions are bound to clash...I think that people should worship whomever and however they choose, but they should keep it to themselves (not try to tell others that they SHOULD believe the same things they do) as it is a personal choice...And if some people choose not to worship anyone or anything, that's their personal decision, too.

Our Constitution guarantees separation of church & state. It also guarantees freedom of religion- which by default guarantees freedom FROM religion.

End of story.

OH...I forgot to pose MY question

If it were determined that religion should be mandatory...How would it be determined WHICH religion everyone should follow?

religion is a lifestyle choice. You believe something because you believe it. You can't have somebody say "You must be a christian/hindu/sikh etc." You must believe in the religion to live the life of one properly. And yes, it teaches good morals, but it also divides a community. It's like government. I try to not talk to people about government much because there are such clear divisions. Religion must be believed in to be chosen, and can't be forced on anyone. We are free and nobody but yourself can make you truly religious.

From observation alone .. ...religious followers have caused more violence than ever. [note] religious people..not religion itself].
The followers of religion interpret thier own version of their beleifs into how they assume the message of god should be delivered..for example: in sentencing a man to the death penalty ..the judges say 'in the name of god' before carrying out the sentence...man justifies everything they do and say in the name of the almighty to make themselves unaccountable for thier own actions...
When an athiest is about to die ..they take the lords name in the promise of forgiveness after all these years for thier actions throughout thier lives.
I can go on and on ..using mere examples of how religion affects the thinking of these people.
All in all ...every man woman and child has the right to belong to any church of thier choosing..as long as they remember..the mere man standing up in that pulpit is not the messenger of god himself ..otherwise he would have wings or his name would be jesus.

"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13)

As a Christian its my duty to eliminate Sodomites from society thus making it a better place. So yes Christianity can help cleanse of us from this moral decay.

We have seen what religious zealots are capable of. And the scientologists...the lesser said, the better.

In all fairness - the scientologists haven't killed 100s of thousands in the name of their religion.

Are you serious?

What about this verse?

"If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity" (Deuteronomy 25:11-12)

Would this then also be your Christian duty?

Scientology also hasn't been around for thousands of years. Give them time.

Definitely. Don't blame Buddy Holly for Britney.

if you feel you need a religous belief to give you strength, hope, a place to go when you die, an answer for things that cant be answered, and/or motivation to be a good person.... then enjoy.... just dont try to push it on other people - no matter how well being you're trying to be.

if you dont believe - thats great - no need to look down on the people who do.

thats pretty much it

I like urge's take on this.

But if you listen to something told you by a smiling yeti with bunny ears, then that also can be a problem. And if you wake up in the middle of the night with the smiling yeti clinging to your leg and purring/singing, then my advice is, get away from there. Fast.
