I need to vent about this. While I was eating lunch at work, I watched the interview on The Early Show with the victim's parents and the sheriff.

I don't understand how kids can do something like this. This would NOT have happened when I was their age. I can't even fathom how I would feel if I were the parent of one of the kids that did the beating. I would probably disown them. I'm not a parent, so I shouldn't even guess as to how I would react. Who do we blame? The parents? The internet? Society? Who? WHAT IS IT that drives kids to do these horribly violent acts? Besides this incident in Florida, there has been a lot of incidences of people being beaten (one man died) on the Philadelphia subways. AND THEY WERE ALL TEENAGERS THAT DID THE BEATINGS!

I don't get it. Somebody please help me to understand it. Those of you out there who are parents - please explain it to me.

OK, rant over. Thanks for listening.

yeah i read one about a 20 year old girl in england who was beaten to death for being goth, and trying to protect her boyfriend from being beaten for the same reason.

and it's not just that, its plain old disrespect for people, belonging and your elders. My sister and mostly my brother are always yelling at my parents. Swearing as loud as they can and being disrespectful, with no reprocussions. I'm 2-5 years older than them and I would have never gotten away with something like that!

"no repercussions"??????!!!!!!! Shit, if I talked like that to my Mom, she would have smacked me so hard across the mouth! I STILL don't talk like that to my Mom!! Maybe you're right mm - my sister never disciplined her kids and she's had nothing but problems with them since they were teenagers.

Guess Dr. Spock wasn't so great after all, eh?

Mostly any more parents are afraid to properly discipline their children, with all the nut jobs out there ready to yell child abuse for the littlest things.

You can't blame the media. I was exposed to the same stuff when I was growing up (sometimes worse) and I never pulled any of that shit.

What these kids lack, are positive influence and a damn good ass kicking.
They need regular doses of both. I know from experience.

It disgusts me. I'm not sure if you have happy slapping in america but basically, people beat others up then film it on their mobile phones.

I'd say it's a mixture of television, parents, the internet, and as time went on, the quest for a reputation and personalities simply became more violent. This then leads to television about it, the bad children grow to be parents and the internet has videos and stories and even games about it. It's a mixture of things causing a continuous loop. I don't think one thing can be solely to blame. Or there's also the Michael Myers theory.

Teens beat up girl to make 'popular' YouTube video

CNN-IBN

Police in Lakeland say the victim was beaten up by six girls when she arrived at her friend’s home.

Two boys stood outside and kept a lookout.

The assaulters videotaped it and threatened to post it on the Internet.

The badly-bruised girl was taken to the hospital with a concussion and damage to her left eye and ear.

The victim's father said the girls wanted to create a video that would be popular on the YouTube.

The mother of one of the arrested girls says that the victim provoked the attack by threatening and insulting the girls on their MySpace pages.

The mother is making excuses for her criminal kid!

To be fair though, this kind of stuff has been happening since people existed. Not videotaping things mind you but violence from teens in general has been common throughout history.

I think it's stupid when people give a crap about myspace. Like people end up falling out with others if they're not in their top friends list! It really is stupid and the mother deserves to be beaten up by the victims mother because she provoked it by saying nasty things about his daughter!

I have to agree with everything you said. Now, my Mom wasn't a "hitter" - I can remember being spanked twice - but you better believe when she told me to do something, I did it quick!

its not about hitting your kid - or not hitting them ... it's about being there for them. spending time with them. instilling your values through osmosis.

its a good chance that a lot of the parents capable of raising little scumbag shitheads capable of something this stupid - dont have the mental tools to deal with kids in any way shape or form.

daddy's too busy climbing the corporate ladder, or mommy's out clubbing with mr crack.
(or vice-versa)

plus the odd kid is wired wrong no matter what.

personally i've never hung around with anyone in my entire life capable of something like this.

when the media figures the kids (with no parental guidence) are preaching to them that being cold is cool .. what do you expect.

the only solution is that fucking useless irresponsible knuckle dragging self centred scumbag lowlife degenerate trailer trash idiots - stop having kids ! neuter them !

but oh no .. they have their rights ...

Heh, almost sounds like what I said to my sister when she told me my 17 year old niece was pregnant with her SECOND child! Before I could stop myself, I blurted out "Jesus Christ, you gotta get her fixed!" I felt really bad as soon as I said it, but then two minutes later I said "Didn't you ever teach her about birth control?"

All of this just reinforces the fact that I'm very glad I never had kids.

I think parents should stand up and take more resposibilty for there kids instead of blaming something or some one else. When I was growing up I got into alot of trouble as youth and got in a few fights but I never talked back to my parents casue if i did my dad would have knocked my teeth out.And my friends and i never went and and jumped on people for the hell of it either.

I truly believe parents should beat their kids.I dont mean with thier fists but use an open palm or do what my dad did to me and use a belt. That crap hurts.

Also I do they should should monitor who does and doesn't breed. In my town there is at least four couples that have kids and I dont think they should be casue there mentally challenged.

I don't understand why they don't ry and create somthing rather than nearly kill someone to make a popular video.

I'm sure there has to be more than just the video if they are doing this.

They must be angry to begin with and not posses any values of humanity. It is something that happens a lot, not always for a video. I was a victim of some teenage punks and skinheads once, they put me in hospital, it's a long story, but they are the type of people who wouldn't go into a fight one on one, which just means they are gutless and afraid.

Probably unloved by thier familys and with out haveing any true goal in life so they don't even think about the consequences of what they are doing.

Punk kids have taken all the backlash against blaming the media and the "what about blaming the parents" mentality and fucking RAN with it. It wasn't their upbringing that beat the shit out of some girl, it was them. Let them take some FUCKING responsibility for their actions.

i dont think anyone is going to argue the fact that these kids should be in neck deep shit and some kind of clockwork orange reconditioning program - but i think when people see this they also tend to look at the bigger picture ..

these are kids ..

where do you start to draw the line with parental supervision/responsibility ?

some asshole kid at 13 running around getting in shit at 1 in the morning is 100% the responsibility of the parent/parents.

at what point do you say - well, nothing the parents can do about it ?
individually ? no - that would be a nightmare in the courts - so they had to pick an age.

until that time there is parental responsibility.. and seriously - i myself havent seen a kid who was raised by parents that gave a shit - capable of crap like these little bastards.

both the parents AND the kids ahould get a royal ass kicking - legally, finantially, and physically.

An age is just a number, IMO.

Until and unless the kid is good enough to take on the world, it is parent's responsibility. How do we find it? Well the parents are the best judges themselves of course.

Which brings me to another point which Urge touched on earlier - why would some parents even give a shit? The case in point is an unwanted pregnancy. The guy didn't want it...the woman didn't want it...and yet the kid is born. How can such a kid get any sort of affection or attention from such parents?

Sometimes it makes me wonder, its better to abort than to raise such a kid and not give a shit about him. Such kids are more prone to grow up as rebels and vigilantes...maybe even a Bundy or a Dahmer.

Its a guranteed fact that almost 95% of all rebellious teens come from family backgrounds where they just aren't needed by their folks.

Blame the rich ones for the other 5%.

Absolutely. And as soon as my National Forced Eugenics Plan comes into play, unfit parents will be sterile until they prove that they are fit parents.

...

But on a more serious, less crazy and sociopathic note...

...

This whole situation disturbs me on a few different levels, especially the violently exploitative voyeuristic nature of the issue at hand. I find it absolutely disgusting and disturbing that this video would not only be posted, but be host to thousands of hits. It strikes me personally as a feminist (yes, deep inside this rough angry shell there is somewhat of a feminist in me) who sympathizes specifically with crimes against women (call me sexist if you like - we all have sores that break our heart and strike us personally and vulnerably - violence against women and children does that to me).

Good thread, Hammerfan. It was something that really bothered me when I heard about it, too. The bottom line is: Fights go on every day. But this fight, beating, abuse, was watched by so many people... What's wrong with us?

you dont have to be a feminist to have that button pushed ..

you just have to be a person with a sense of decency.

unfortunately kindness and decency is viewed as a weakness these days.

you can almost understand it coming from people who have a background that breed nothing but a total absence of self-worth ..

the ones that get me are the middle and upper class wannabe's that buy into the 'cold' bullshit.

ANY kind of gang mentality makes me want to puke.

Yeah, I was just concerned that if I went on a "violence against women" tirade, the response would be, "YOU'RE SEXIST: VIOLENCE AGAINST BOYS IS TERRIBLE TOO," which YES, it IS.

...

It's just that issues like this one strike me hard, to the core, and personally.

And I agree with you. I just don't understand the gang mentality. It's obviously people who are lonely and looking for a familial sort of unit (mayhaps there isn't a reliable one at home). Then again, I am not a child psychologist nor do I study gang/mob mentality, so what do I know in the matter?

But, what you said seems very insightful. You sound like a decent person with a good sense of right and wrong. Not everybody has that. A lot of people these days have a skewed sense of right and wrong. Let's take it down another path and talk about people who abuse animals. Another "hot button topic" for me. If I ever saw someone - child or adult - abusing an animal, I think I would go psycho on them.

It's really the only answer that I can come up with the support the reliance and allegiance of gangs. If there is no supportive family unit, the family unit is broken (single mom/dad), or the child is from a working family (mother and father are not around), the gang would serve as a surrogate family in the absence of those familial and parental influences. You see these cases more in lower socioeconomic situations where both mothers and fathers are forced to work and also the rate of single parents are higher (think about a single mother taking care of a son who is pursuing the typical father figure - a gang member could easily serve as that paternal strength and protector).

But anyway.

I definitely agree with you on animal cruelty; it's something that evokes a specific and strong response from me; I have a very difficult time seeing animals being abused, even in film and on TV when I know it's just part of the script; the thought of the abuse honestly haunts me (also with rape or child abuse scenes; they disturb me and I have a difficult time watching them).

What confounds me is how people simply do not believe that animals have feelings. It's true; my ultra-conservative friend Liz honestly does not believe that animals have feelings; I would get pissed off when she would kick my cat or toss her off her lap. But people feel that way.

We can sit here and say "Oh, society is fucked. Kids are unloved, we all love violence, irresponsible people should be sterilized, yadda-yadda-yadda"...but really, what is anyone DOING? Aside from raising kids properly (which I know many of you are doing/have done/plan to do), how are you fixing the problem? No matter how many "good people" there are in the world, evil will always outnumber them: its human nature. As a species, we look for the path of least resistance, and thats what leads us to decadence, greed, violence and everything thats wrong in the world.

You are absolutely a stronger person than most. Typically, abuse is the gift that keeps on giving; victims become victimizers and perpetuate the cycle. While some overcome that cycle, individually, unfortunately it's not everyone who has the strength and individual will to do so. I don't know why kids do things like this. I'm their age, I see them every day and I have no clue what causes people to do this. I don't know why half of my peers do anything they do. Fighting, disrespecting the teachers just for the fuck of it, snorting crushed-up pills in the back of the classroom. The sad thing is these are the people I've known since Elementary school for the most part, back when everyone seemed so innocent.

That's exactly what I think. They do something stupid like throw a paper aeroplane or something like that, then they get shocked and angry when they're told off!
