Well I think the film deserves its own discussion thread. Spoilers can be talked about freely here, so make sure you've seen the film if you want to read the thread.... Anyway:

What was everyone's favorite monster in the film?
Favorite Scene?

My favorite monster is the huge one at the end... It's absolutely spectacular to see it almost as a silhouette walking all by itself in the field... it's amazing. Second fave would be those spiders because they're so fucking terrifying.

Scene would either be the tentacle attack in the garage, or the end where they see the huge monster.

What was everyone's favorite monster in the film?

The dimly silhouetted "pickers".

Favorite Scene?

The ending.

The ending was amazing.

I saw this in the theatres and it was such an amazing experience.

the best monster was the last one shown on the film. the huge towering four legged monster with tentacles all over its sides. you know the one, its foot came close to crushing the car.

i wasnt as impressed by the giant monster as i would have been if i hadn't seen cloverfield - but it did look good.

really hard to pick a favorite scene for me - i thought the movie was pretty depressing - but i did like the look of the monsters - the pseudo human faces of the insects and spiders ..

i thought the movie was pretty depressing

I was very bleak. Felt really bummed for the guy at the end.

My favorite scene was when they shot the lunatic christian woman :p

The scene with spider eggs hatching all over that guy made me cringe....

I love the ending. I love it when "the hero" fucks everything up due tro a twisted sense of morality. He blew it, and it was awesome.

When the dad promises his son that he won't let the monsters get him, I turned to my wife and said "I'd never make that promise...it's totally out of his control. Promise the kid you'll "die trying" or 'they'll have to go through me first'"

SPOILER.

Instead of letting the creatures have their way with the passengers, he opted for a quick death that he deemed to be a more acceptable way to die.

thats got nothing to do with morals or ethics - it has to do with chosing how you want to die (quick and painlessly - or the torture of being eaten alive or used as a living breeding ground for spiders.

(all of them - but the child - were in agreement - the father was making a huge sacrifice.

mind you - personally i would have waited until the last possible second ..

but even then ..

although it is nothing more than a goofy horror movie - it did make me ask myself the question - under any circumstances - could i do it - even if it seemed like 100% the right choice ?

dont know if i could.

what did morality have to do with it ?

he was keeping his word to his son in the only way he knew...it was certainly a decision born out of his personal morals. He wouldn't break his word and he didn't.

That is a moral choice... albeit a fucked up one

He definitely kept his word, although I don't think his boy imagined he'd be getting a spot of euthanasia in response to the promise he made his father make.

I agree with urgeok2. The father was making a huge sacrifice for the group but he didn't give his son much of a choice.

Brilliant film.

The best designed monster that you get a good look at was the beast with four wings. The spiders were pretty scary, but based on a spider. seen that done a million times. the other two big ones were impressive, would love to have a proper look at the massive praying mantis!

Best scene is near the end, shot from outside the car when you see the flashes of the gun going off. Fantastic. A close second is when the huge monster walks past them.

I guess he kept his promise though...unless of course him doing that, when he didn't "have to", made him in fact a monster...?
Personally I thought they could've held out a little longer, or attempted an escape...I mean, they did all that other shit...

I liked the movie though, good atmosphere.
Probably one of the best "horror" films I've seen in some time.

One of the best horror movies I've ever seen.
Fuck it, I'll take it one step further. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Did you notice at the end, after he kills everybody in the car, how the mist mysteriously goes away a minute later? They've been driving for hours, and then they stop, he does his awful deed, and then gets out of the car, and BOOM, no more mist. I think there's something intentional there, almost as if the mist was waiting for him to fuck up, like the mist was following him and torturing him, only to say "Surprise! I'm gone!" after he did what he did. That's how I interpret it, anyway... like the mist has a mind of its own.

Maybe the title "The Mist" could be interpreted as "The Missed" as well, since its about missed opportunities for survival, or missed opportunities for saving someone / living.

Possible humorous endings:

The camera shows the car from the outside like when Drayton was about to shoot everyone... Then we hear the bullets fire. Silence. We then see Drayton holding the gun, still pointed to the ground, everyone alive and he says, "We can't do that! We've come so far! We have to keep fighting and trying! We can start life over! Nothing is ever hopeless... We can do this! We have to fight! We'll survive! I promise you that we'll surv..."

I thought it was one of the best Stephen King adaptations to date. I felt as though I had seen the movie since it played out very similarily to how the book played out in my head :D

The scariest monster was of course the zealotry within the grocery store and that scared me more than anything else.

The ending killed me (and them). I'm more of a fight to your very last breath type of person, however, they obviously made the decision for him.

Great movie.

It's nice to think, that in an emergancy situation people would just break down, turn on each other and speed up their own demise.

I've rented this stupid thing 3 times and STILL havent had time to watch the whole thing :o

Looks pretty sweet from what I've seen though...though thats only like the first 20 minutes or so (Until the teenage guy gets pulled out through the loading bay).

I think I'm just going to buy it...

I hardly ever rent for this very reason...always winds up being a waste of money.

Meh, really it hasn't been that much money, actually...the corner store down the street only charges $2 a rental...still though, that is $6 I dont have anymore, heh.

Besides, at this point it would be like $15 to buy it used...I'd really rather put up the extra $5 and get it new. Stupid Blockbuster...

i buy 90% of my movies used.

Only ever had one bad one so far (out of a hell of a lot of movies)

i wait until they go on sales - lots of 2 for $20 deals, 3 for $24 ... often even cheaper - 5$ each.

thats getting very close to the price of a rental.

I'm the same way most of the time...just not with newer movies.

Once they've been around for awhile you can get some good deals used, but I haven't been able to find anywhere around here that has used new releases at a decent price.

i like the way the lady that went to save her children was alive and on one of the military trucks as drayton lamented what he had just done. as if to say that they (and drayton in particular) had made all the wrong choices from the start.

it also works to point out that no matter what the survivors did the situation just kept getting more and more hopeless all the way to the crescendo of the huge creature walking over their truck to the running out of gas. when you think of the mental exhaustion and hopelessness that they must of felt it makes a lot more sense that they decided to off themselves at that particular time. after all, if all is lost why not do what you think needs to be done while you still have the nerve and before one of the "big ones" comes and opens the top of your truck like a can of tuna.

also, the ONLY time my suspension of disbelief wavered was when they went to the pharmacy and didn't run the hell out of there when they first heard the spiders crawling around. fight or flight? FLIGHT!!!!
that was the only time i realized i was watching a movie.

and in case anyone was wondering...i think this was the best flat-out movie i had seen in a while, much less horror movie.

I know, really.

But, I could definitely see it happening. Things start happening like she predicts they will, and they start to lose it, and latch on to her, and what she is saying in desperation and fear. People can be pretty weak minded. And not just Americans.....;) Whats so awful is yes, I could definitely see it happening that way.

As for the ending, it got to me. Yes, the situation did seem hopeless, it really did seem like the end. It would be hard to fault anyone for making the decision that was made at that time. Its just awful, and heart breaking....and one of the most effective movie endings I have seen in a very long time.

i think religion has a greater influence in the US than in canada ... especially the american bible belt.

i'm not painting everyone by the same brush of course - but there is more of a history of killing (for god and country) down there than there is up here.
we maintain a huge division between church and state ..

it's a very thin line in the US.

I didn't realise that was her on the truck, but I did notice the look she gave him :) I was trying to spot anybody from the supermarket.

I could well believe that people would follow the religeous nut. Especially in America. Not so sure they'd be willing to stab people and throw them to the monsters.

Unfortunately I saw an interview with the director before I saw the film where they mention that the film has a twist at the end. So I was just waiting for something to happen after he shoots everyone. I figured he was either going to get eaten and that would be it, or he would be 'saved'.

Agree with smarmytoad, one of the best movies, flat out.

that's true but i don't think it would have mattered where the story was set, the religious nut played by harden would definitely had a following anywhere(even the great white nort:p).

the reason is because when you scare the bejesus out of people they will latch on to ANYONE who sounds like they have a solution. and in that particular situation in that supermarket the only person offering a solution is the one that believes in mysterious white-bearded men in the sky and talking snakes and burning bushes. basically magic. now i'm not trying to dash anyone's spirituality, which is a very personal thing and deserves respect. but when nutty religious zealots start pushing their rhetoric on the scared and uninformed you get the kind of effect you saw in the movie. anyone notice the look of POWER on her face when the young soldier was stabbed by one of her "disciples"?

power corrupts for certain. even if it's righteous power.

Saw this Sunday night

Pretty good except- I think when Dad saw the tanks at the end he should have started scratching his face off .

Both me and my husband had the same comment when it was over...."hm" and then total silence.

Which is odd since we always discuss a film after viewing.

I really have nothing else to add, I think it hits a nerve with people with small kids.

I loved the ending soooo much. Terrific, I was in shock leaving the theater, I went alone so I couldn't talk about how awesome it was! Then I rented it with my husband and he didn't like it. Oh well, horror movies are best watched alone. I too liked the huge Star Wars looking monster at the end, favorite scene was probably the beginning of the flying bug monsters. I was hoping that little kid would get accidentally shot, but guess that would be too predictable.
