Why aren't there more free contests? I'm really big on free contests that support the indie filmmaker. It's the "free to enter" contests that are rare these days and hard to find. Check out this contest - it's free - (no ridiculous entry fee). And the top prize is $5000 in cash - so there's nothing to lose Yes, I'm biased, but I can't stand contests that charge entry fees. So where does the $5K prize come from, if not the entry fees?

Contests are usually set up so that the majority of the entry fees goes to the awards and promotion of the event. I entered several competitions and it was money well spent. I landed a manager who introduced me to a lawyer who introduced me to an agent.

Free competitions aren't going to be able to promote themselves properly which is why winning one of them doesn't give you any exposure. Are there any notables on the judging staff? Are there any agents/managers/directors/writers on the judging you? What good will it do for your career?

Enter reputable contests. Check out the contest feedback from past entrants. Choose wisely...

But before that, make sure you have a really great script/film to show!
