Lending out your horror?...I was considering sending Mudsliptones my John Carpenter's "Vampires" movies, 1 and 2, when I remembered that I lent them out along with my "Grimm's Grimmest" book...and i haven't gotten them back...You would think that I would have learned my lesson after having to replace Stephen King's "Skeleton Crew" and Ramsey Campbell's "Influence", which, by the way was one tough mother to replace...but NOOOO...I just lent out Soul Reaver tonight...WTF???...Anyway, just wondering how much shit you guys have lost or had to replace because you "lent" it out...

I regularly by D&D monster manuals to get tattoo ideas and I just will admit that some of the artwork in the books are just fucking awesome. I lent this book out to someone, which is out of print, for them to get ideas for a graphic arts class, NEVER SAW THE BOOK AGAIN, SOB better be cremated with that book because if he is buried I am digging his carcass up and taking my book back. I also loaned out a Soundgarden CD still hasnt been returned, and I let an X borrow my tape collection you know like a CD case, got stolen out of her car, there goes $1000 plus dollars of Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill, Motorhead, Mercyful Fate and so on. TO THE SOB WHO STOLE MY TAPES, ENJOY THEM WHILE YOU CAN I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE MWAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Never ever ever do that again. If you want to lose D&D shit, ship it to me. :D
You'll understand this as well, Creeper
Every cool book on folk or high magic that I started with, was loaned and never returned. I had some cool ones too. It helps that I can't remember half their titles. Damnit.
Now, I don't loan people shit, especially my cd's or books.

whenever things like that happen it is for a reason. we never really own anything. if you dont believe me just wait a while and whatever you like the most will disappear. in my opinion, books, music, etc... will go wherever they are needed the most at the time. its kind of a karma thing. its like when you lose something, and you think you really need it, and then a week later you find it and realize you didnt need it as bad as thought. imo:)

OMG! Don't get me started!
I lent my favorite Goosebumps books to an ex friend when I was 10, and he kept saying that "he lost them"or "they were in storage" either way I never saw them again, he also borrowed a Nintendo Power magazine, brought it back in a week, "after he destroyed the cover" and borrowed it again the next day.....guess what, I NEVER SAW IT AGAIN....My ex friend Tanna, "accidentally" took my Donkey Kong game in her Game Boy, and kept it, along with the Final Fantasy game she stole from me

I loan out movies, yeah. But I think about who I'm loaning it to, first. If it's someone I know I'll get it back from, I'll just loan them the movie. If it's someone I doubt I'll get it back from, or if it's a teacher, I'll copy the DVD so they can just keep it. If I loan something, I make sure I get it back, having learned my lesson from the 'Realms of the Haunting' loaning.

you seriously wante to send me those movies?????
how sweet of you
but i think it would be allot cheaper if i just went out to a local store and hired them
but i saw them, i know wich ones they are now
anyway, when i was a kid I was a huge indie jones fan, I had temple of doom and last crusade on tape
only one muissing was raiders of the lost arc
now, they gave it on the TV, I taped it and my uncle asked me if he could see it, so i gave it (I was just a kid)
NEVER saw it back, and believe it or not, it took over 5 years till they gave it back on the TV!!!!!!
I never lend out stuff, only to people i see on a regular base, like my GF, off course, her brothr, members of my musicband
but to no one else!!!!!!!!!!
I sometimes say no to them, when it concerns mùovies like battle royal and evil dead wich took me allot of money and effort to get them in my collection

Man, this thread has really put a chap in my ass.
YES I have lent out shit that 1) I never saw again; 2) saw again, only MUCH later; 3) saw again, only it was so beat to shit I didn't want it back. This has happened to me SEVERAL times!
I even tried to systematize my lending. See, I'm the type of guy who wants to share his shit, just so he can pass on an experience to someone else. So, after being a burned a couple of times, I decided to make a "sign out" list. Friends would write their name on the list, the item they borrowed, and the date they borrowed it. This way, I could keep track of where my shit was and how long, exactly, it had been missing.
But this crap didn't work either. I still got shit back in bad shape, or the people I lent the thing out to lost it or something.
Now, I don't lend out ANYTHING! Seriously. If someone wants to watch a movie or something, I make them sit at my house and watch it. If they want a book, I'd sooner go out and buy them a copy than lend it to them. This has led to some people actually trying to lift stuff from me. Whenever I have my good friend down from Jackson, I always have to check his duffle bag before he leaves to make sure he's not about to smuggle out any of my crap. It's ridiculous. My wife, even though she knows this about me, offered to lend one of her employees my copy of Aswang! I offended the guy when I vehemently refused, but hey ... fuck him.
People just don't realize that the stuff you lend them has a LOT more meaning to you than it does to them, and they treat your shit accordingly. I can't stand it.
Which reminds me, I need to return this copy of Un Chien Andalou to somebody ... he's probably missing it. Need to clean the soda off it first, though.

Nope! Used to, don't any more. Would rather buy you one than lend you mine; rising gas prices have something to do with this. Nowadays it costs me more to drive across town to retrieve what you borrowed than it would cost to buy you that movie or book or whatever. For the past few years, it has actually been cheaper just to buy the person one. For that matter, I would rather GIVE a person the thing than LEND it, because then I don't have to worry about getting the damn thing back! Does that make any sense?

Here's a little tip on lending...DON'T!
But, if you do, be sure the borrower will take care of the movie, book etc... like you would.
With DVD's, place the movie disk in another case with your name all over it. Place a post-it note inside the original case, that you hold on to, with the borrowers name and the date borrowed then set it seperate from your other movies. I haven't "lost" a movie since I started doing it this way.;)

As for the rest of these replies....Yeah...NO ONE takes care of your stuff like you do...Which really pisses me off, because if I EVER use something that belongs to someone else (which is extremely rare) I put it right back where I got it from, and in the same condition...Actually, in some cases, I give it back in BETTER condition, cuz if something is dirty, I clean it, or broken, I fix it (if possible)
2 Thanksgivings ago, I borrowed a table from Stupid Shane's mom because we needed more table space...That thing was filthy....I scrubbed it till it looked like brand new before I used it, and returned it the very next day...

This is a REALLY interesting topic to me, because it addresses the problem of THINGS WE HATE THAT WE ALLOW OTHER PEOPLE TO DO TO US. It's your stuff, you choose to lend it out and then you fret when it doesn't come back or when it comes back smashed, etc.
Now in the wondrous spectrum of human relationships, no relationship is really tonally pure. Well, okay, maybe some are. But in most, there's a bit of anger or resentment mixed in with the friendship. Or jealousy mixed in with the love. In one instance I know of, there's this fellow who has an anger problem, lashes out in little ways or big ways, makes verbal stabs, tries to get away with little annoying actions and then enjoys the suffering he causes. This is the media-sucking vampire whore who has tried for years to borrow my DVDs, though he knows damn well I don't like to lend them out. BASICALLY, this is a decent person here; but some weird stuff happened to him when he was a kid, and he kinda has an anger problem.
A few months ago I started putting my foot down, gently but firmly. If he wants to borrow something, I immediately say "No, no, no, you should watch it here," and into the machine it goes. We fast-forward scan through the disc, see the good parts of the movie, and then he's "watched" it. The disc never needs to leave the house!
I know he doesn't like it when I assert control over my own shit. But I feel better knowing he didn't abuse the friendship for purposes of causing emotional distress so he could get off on the power/control of it.

Oh...My sister is like that...I wouldn't let her borrow my new steam cleaner (I had only used it once)...So...She complained to my mother! ...How childish?....Anyway, my mother gave me shit for it, so I eventually lent it to my sister, just to make it stop...AND...The stupid bitch broke the hand tool...No big surprise, but NOW I can make mom feel guilty about it, so NEITHER of them ask to borrow shit from me anymore...
My sister STILL tries to irritate me in other ways, though...Kinda 'testing/pushing' me....For example...She KNOWS (and so does everyone else) that I don't let other people (except their dad) hold my babies, when they are little...Babies are susceptible to all sorts of germs and illnesses, so the stupid bitch tries to KISS them, looking right at me when she does it...Almost daring me...grrr...ALSO...She knows that I don't let anyone take my kids anywhere (except me), Seri never went anywhere with Shane (without me) until she was almost 17...Alex is only allowed to go with his dad NOW, because we are divorced, and it still makes me nervous as hell....Anyway, she used to CONSTANTLY ask my kids if they wanted to go places with her, she finally gave up because they kept saying "no", but she still gave me a lot of shit about it....Needless to say, I only see her about twice a year...
I fucking HATE people that can't respect the wishes and boundaries of others...
I don't do that to people...And they shouldn't TRY to do it to me...
Damn...Can I go off on a tangent or WHAT?:p :D

By the way, I think there's some people who are exempt from this kind of thinking...certain people that I WILL lend something to without a second thought, not just because I know they'll take care of the thing but also because they're a close buddy who kinda has been around longer. That's a different kind of lending that is more of a true sharing because I don't feel my "stuff" is in some other person's "zone," it's more like they are an extension of my "zone" in the first place.
Uh, oooooooohkay, I just read that and it doesn't make a bit of sense, so I can see that I have to make some more coffee now. Thank You!

when you have friends and family members visiting you, one of first things they see is the big ass dvd collection you have.
they dont ask you right away, but before the time spent together is over you'll get "the ask".
"yo, do you mind if i borrow a movie?"
do you let a piece of your collection spend the night with a stranger?,... or do you make a new enemy?i myself made alot of enemies in my years of collecting, i guess i plan on keeping it that way.

Good topic. No, I don't loan the VHS or DVD movies out anymore. If they ever go out, it's because they're being given away or sold. When asked, I politely explain that it's my "policy" because I never know when I'm gonna want to see something. And actually, that's true; I have these in the collection because they're movies I do feel like watching from time to time.
Yes, people have gotten irked about it, but they got over it eventually.
I would usually rather give something away because at least the matter is finished there...

I've lent my dvd's to friends in the past and on many occasion's I have never got them back.but in the last year I only loan out my dvd's to one friend and that's because he'll loan me one of his at the same time.So it's kinda like a tempary trade.
yeah, i was gonna do "the hostage" too.
but most of the time they dont have anything i wouldnt mind keeping over mine.
plus, ever notice that if someone other then you touched the disc it gets scratched?

What's going on everybody? I prefer to have backups of all my movies so that I don't have to cough up an intestine when it gets damaged or lost.

That's a good idea also...
now, I thought I would mention, a movie is a really good gift because it's in a little box, and it's an hour and a half of fun and, I don't know, can reflect your philosophy of life or something. Never give someone a movie if you think they won't like it because that's just sort of insulting. Only give good movies away.
If you have a really awful movie and you think it would be wrong for anyone else on the planet to waste their time watching it, then do the world a favor and toss it in the garbage. Smash it a little first, too. That way the movie won't be able to hurt anybody else.

Now I can't find my copy of Hitcher
Almost weekly I am noticing that my movies are missing
It would seem that MY movies have a tendency to lend THEMSELVES out...
I am so grateful for eBay

I have lent CDs and DVDs to my friends 4-5 times, and found out that they either come back with plenty of scratches, or don't come back at all. My DVD of Final Destination was full of scratches when my friend returned it to me about a fortnight later, after constant calls from me to return it, of course. Since then, giving them out is a strict no-no. Any excuse will do, as long as the person asking gets the idea that I am not going to give it to him, no matter what.

I've had to replace a bunch of shit. Its kinda weird how friends think you're a videostore cuz you've got lots of movies. I don't lend shit out to people these days unless its something I don't care about and then I'll usually just give it to them.

I have lost more DVDs and CDs to divorce. It's strange how a $15 movie you introduced them to suddenly becomes the crux of a legal battle.

Digging up old threads...cool, now I've been here long enough to witness this phenomenon:D
I used to lend movies and books all the time and lost some really ( At least I thought at the time) precious things.
Now I am alot more Zen about it (or at least I try very hard)
I don't hold on to alot of stuff anymore and when someone borrows something-I try to let go mentallly so that if it doesn't come back, I can just shrug it off like it's no big deal.
