I was watching an episode of Corner Gas, and got the idea, we should have a movie club. Every week, we pick one movie. The members who own or can rent the movie, watch it at some point in the week, then we exchange our view points and ideas on it.

I figure this could be something to make the place a bit more active.

*****************************Info***************** **************

Selected Movies

All movie suggestions sent in, will be placed in a hat, and drawn randomly. The movie that has the most votes, by posted date, will be the movie of the week. All movie titles will be held for future movie club weeks for voting. If your movie does not make the top list, it will be carried over to the next week. All movies which have been watched and discussed, will be posted on this page.

Rules

There are no actual rules for this, with one exception. Do not use this thread for rambling and nonsense if you are not participating that specific week. Try to keep all Movie Club talk, relevant to the movie at hand, and voting.

Also, do not contact me asking why the movie you suggested is not on here this week.

Now, let's all have some fun.

Previous Movies

The Funhouse (1981)

well since it's your idea, pick the first movie....

It should be something not at the cinema as it will be easier for others to acess where ever they are.

I'd say let's pick a movie on either Saturday or Sunday. That way, it gives a full week to go round trip.

Plus, we need to see how many people are going to participate.

Time to vote.

Vote one time only. Be sure you have your vote in before midnight on Saturday.

Pitch Black (2000)

The Funhouse (1981)

Donnie Darko (2001)

All results were random. I put all of the suggestions in a hat and drew them so that it would be fair. If the movie/movies you suggested are not here, they will be in votes at later times. I am keeping them all logged down.

The movie with the most votes at midnight on Saturday, will be crowned. If you do not own the movie, try to rent or purchase it if possible.

The Funhouse....based on the book written by Dean Koontz (using a psydonym).

"Dean R. Koontz wrote a novelization of the screenplay under the pseudonym Owen West. The book contains a lot of backstory added by Koontz. Because of this, and the fact that the book was released before the movie due to a delay in post production, it is often mistaken that the movie is based on the book, but the book is in fact based on the movie."

I wanted to mention that while I think "The Funhouse" is a great horror film, the sound mix on the DVD is awfully unbalanced...deafeningly loud ambient effects and whisper-quiet dialogue tracks...not very much fun to listen to, which is a shame because the musical score is so good.

my vote is for Altered States.

as for Funhouse, the main thing that stuck out to me was that the entire plotline of the younger brother sneaking out of the house to go to the carnival was completely pointless filler. it could have easily been cut out and the audience never would have known the difference.
he left the house, spied on his sister, stayed out late, and did absolutely nothing. nobody knew he was there, nobody knew he was gone from the house, nothing. why even have that plotline?
I like Funhouse, but I tend to think it's because I'm biased towards movies that deal with the carnival and sideshows. I'm also nostalgic for it b/c it's one of the first horror movies I remember seeing.

Finished watching The Funhouse...and I was impressed by it. Given my love for slashers, especially from the 80s, this doesn't disappoint the appetite at all. The plot is simple and paper-thin (ala most teen slashers), and I thought the killer/monster was grotesque enough to elicit horrific reactions from the viewers. The minor flaws were the characterisation - Hooper could have made more believable characters (although all the actors do their best), and the first 35-40 mins is a bit slow for a slasher, although one may argue that its the buildup to the delicious 2nd half coming up. All in all, I would give it a 07/10.

My vote is for The Virgin Spring. Would love to see Bergman's masterpiece and the reactions from you all.

The Funhouse ended up being a lot better watch than I thought it would be. Adding to what _V_ said I think the circus lent itself well to the atmosphere and I'm one who enjoys a bit of build-up as an hors d'oeuvre before we're treated to a filling course of bloodshed. I would say 7.5/10 as I enjoyed the killer and have an unnatural propensity for avoiding whole numbers. On a side note, I really didn't have an issue with a sound on my DVD, maybe I wasn't listening carefully enough.

Agree totally. The carnival's surreality added a lot to the atmosphere prevalent throughout the 2nd part of the movie. Very twisted, very macabre. It was a fun watch, for sure.

I think the Funhouse caps off sort of a trilogy for Hooper, in the same way that they call the Thing, In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness a trilogy for Carpenter. Between TCM, Eaten Alive and the Funhouse, I think Hooper has mapped out a nihilistic, confusing apocalyptic America through these movies. The atmosphere is cool and seems to have had a big influence on Rob Zombie later (especially the barker character). It's also one of the earliest Little Red Ridinghood teen slashers, being from a time before they were thirty Friday the 13th movies.
