After a long, painful, and rapid decline, particularly in the writing department, this supposedly secular show ended the series on a religious note. Quite possibly Chronogrl's biggest televisual disappointment of the early 2000s.
The only time I have any desire to watch the X-Files again is when they have repeats of the first 3-4 seasons or so. After that I just listen to my heart as it breaks and falls through the holes in the overly elaborate plot line.

agreed, unfortunately.
although truthfully the show had great episodes beyond the 4th season. but yeah, the last two seasons were trash, increasingly so.
HOWEVER, a point of rejoicing for all of us x-files nerds. if you haven't yet read, they're making another movie. according to chris carter, the film is going to be like a feature-length stand-alone episode (which were the best ones).

TV.com summary
The X-Files is an American Peabody, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning science fiction television series created by Chris Carter, which first aired on 10 September 1993, and ended on 19 May 2002. The show was one of the American FOX network's first major hits, and its main characters and slogans (e.g., "The Truth Is Out There," "Trust No One," "I Want to Believe") became pop culture touchstones. The X-Files is seen as a defining series of the 1990s, coinciding with the era's widespread mistrust of governments, interest in conspiracy theories and spirituality, and the belief in the existence of extraterrestrial life.[1][2

As a HUGE X-Files fan, I too lost interest right about where this "rapid decline" started. I still have no clue where or when this happened, maybe 1 or two seasons before T-1000 replaced Duchovny. Or maybe when Scully got a brain tumor, that dragged on and on and got pretty annoying. I remember a lot of episodes that were particularly bad, like the genie one, or zombie movie one. *cringes*

LOL well put.

It was okay. It definitely deserved more attention than it got. I thought the crossover with the X-Files was pretty lame though.

I used to love the X files to the point of stupidity but I do agree the last few series went rapidly downhill although there were hidden gems such as Paper Hearts, Arcadia, Brand X, and Small Potatoes. Can't wait for the film. I wonder which direction they'll go with??

lol x-files took on a religious tone? anywho. that show started out great but just played it self out.way too many boring alien themes. every episode in the last season or so was about aliens. boring.
Fox: look scully lights in the sky.
scully: its a plane fox
Fox. a plane? at night time scully? i dont think so
until the last season or so it was a great show. let it rest..
