LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Freddy's back. Again.
New Line is in talks with horror production company Platinum Dunes to re-launch the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie series, the franchise that helped establish the studio.
The first "Nightmare" movie was made by Wes Craven and released in 1984. The runaway success of the film spawned a slew of sequels and created one of the most popular villains in screen history, Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund.
The film centered on Krueger, a serial child killer murdered by angry parents, who returns with a burned face and a razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.
A screenwriter will be hired once the Writers Guild of America strike ends. The producers -- Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form -- are hoping to focus part of the new movie on Krueger's backstory.
Platinum Dunes is prepping another re-launch, "Friday the 13th," which will be directed by Marcus Nispel for New Line, for whom it remade "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and its sequel.
The company is remaking "Near Dark" for Rogue and "The Birds" for Universal. It is also prepping a non-remake project, an untitled David Goyer thriller.

I kind of would like to see a prequal written script as they talked about before. I'm sure it would push a lot of peoples buttons, with the killings of the little kids. But I would love to see this done.

I agree...It would bring something fresh and new to the series...Just hope it's not 1/3 backstory, then remake after that. NOES is one of my all time favorites and can only hope they don"t change that by reimaging the movie

This is going to be a remake, meaning there's no way Englund will be playing Freddy. That would connect it to closely to the original.

Englund IS Freddy I don't care what anyone says. NO ONE can replace him.

And if you thought Michael Bay involved with the NOES remake was bad news...read this :
Italian horror site Bad Taste spoke to Robert Englund while he was in Rome scouting locations for his new directorial project THE VIJ, and the actor revealed that he won’t be reprising his classic Freddy Krueger role in New Line and Platinum Dunes’ recently announced NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake.
“I think there is always room for new interpretations by using the new technology,” he tells the site. “In the past, they were talking about a prequel. Anyway, I’m too old for this new version, otherwise it would be FREDDY VS. VIAGRA.”
Englund does say he’s game to make a cameo, though: “It would be a lot of fun. I’m a great fan of [Dunes’] Michael Bay; I took my nephew to see TRANSFORMERS on the opening day, and I thought it was terrific. So, yes, I would be delighted to.”
Sad news for Englund/Freddy fans, though it seems like his experience and fame in the role is paying off: “I wouldn’t be auditioning some gorgeous Italian actresses [for THE VIJ] these days if I hadn’t played Freddy,” he says.
Sooo...any takers for the new NOES?

I've never damned a movie without at least seeing a trailer (other than Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet The Spartans, and Superhero Movie) but, I can't say that anymore.

If anything they should remake all the dodgy ones and leave the 1st.
It's fantastic!!!

Superhero Movie??
Also, I will go and see this, just because of the fact that I want to see if somebody can actually pull of Freddy, instead of being a whiney little punk and crying because Robert Englund is too old to do it. I mean cmon, how the hell do you know that this next Freddy won't be better than the original? How do you know that its not going to revive the series? Hows about this, instead of complaining about it before it even gets written, why not complain about it AFTER YOU KNOW that its garbage, instead of crucifying it before it can even get a chance to shine?
Oh yeah, btw I'm not saying that I don't think Robert Englund should be playing Freddy, all i'm saying is that we simply just don't know.

I couldnt agree with you more. Not just about this, remakes in genreal. Granted, Im not keen on the biggest part of them. Thats something I dont decide until AFTER I see it. And..........This is point to rember. No matter how bad it is, no matter how much you hate it, no matter how bad you feel about wasting two hours on it. I promise, you can go home, pop in the orginal and the remake WONT play in place of the orginal.

I agree completely though I have to say... Englund is Freddy. I think that if they tried to replace him it would knock the idea of a remake right out into "who cares" for me. When I would go to watch it, I would be model that characters every move off the first one, wanting that character to somewhat fail so that I could complain. So I think my letting us know ahead of time that Englund is not portraying Freddy only damaged the movie's chance with the fans.
There is an off chance that it would be a good remake. This is a hard thing to accomplish. The actor would have to get almost the same style of acting as Englund to pull it off. Some of those cheesy death lines were originals, straight from him. You have to have that right amount of cheesy with the right amount of creepy pedaphile look, it is going to be horribly hard to find any one to fit that role.
