Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced today.

He died this morning at the age of 88.

Sir Edmund became the first person to stand on Mt Everest, the world's highest peak, on June 2, 1953 - the day of Queen Elizabeth's coronation.

His chance to make his mark in history came when selected for the 1953 British expedition to climb Mt Everest, led by former commando Colonel John Hunt, later Lord Hunt.

On the mountain, the first assault team that tried to reach the 8848m summit was driven back by altitude sickness.

Hillary, who was renowned for his fitness and speed, was chosen along with Sherpa Tenzing to try next.

As he and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay descended from the May 29 attempt on the mountain, Hillary told fellow climbers: "We knocked the bastard off."

Clark said today that the passing of Hillary was a profound loss to New Zealand.

"My thoughts are with Lady Hillary, Sir Edmund's children, wider family, and close friends at this sad time," Clark said in a statement.

"Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander with modest abilities. In reality, he was a colossus. He was an heroic figure who not only 'knocked off' Everest but lived a life of determination, humility, and generosity."

Hillary a 'giant'

Acting Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has also paid tribute, describing Sir Edmund Hillary as a giant of New Zealand.

"Sir Edmund's name is synonymous with adventure, with achievement, with dreaming and then making those dreams come true," Ms Gillard told Sky News this morning.

"I'm sure there will be many Australians today who reflect on his death.

"People always looked at him as a man of achievement and I think people today will mark his passing with regret."

Ms Gillard said Sir Edmund had led a "long and well-lived life".

"For generations to come, people will study what Sir Edmund achieved by being, of course, the first to get to the top of the world and to successfully conquer Everest.

"Edmund Hillary was one of New Zealand's giants, of course, and known around the world and someone of whom they were so rightly proud."

Welcome 2008 version. Such a shame. It wont be long until the very last (That's right, there's only one since october!) Titanic survior passes on. Millvina dean, the survivor, happens to have been the youngest person on the ship at only two months of age. Funny, the youngest at the time survives the longest. IT works right on papaer but usually in practise things aren't like that!

RIP Sir Edmund. You were a legend to me growing up. Don't know if the quote that's always attributed to you is true or not (Why did you climb Everest? Because it was there.) but it's the archtypical statement of striving to do your best because you can. A great loss.

Maila Nurmi aka VampiraA true genre legend has passed on. Maila Nurmi, known to fans as Vampira, passed away in her sleep at the age of 86 due to natural causes.

Born Maila Elizabeth Syrjäniemi on December 21, 1921, Nurmi will always be remembered for her classic Gothic look that inspired many of our favorite horror icons including the world famous Elvira. Nobody did it better. Nobody ever will.

Her most noted role came in the form of playing "Vampire Girl" in the infamous Ed Wood, Jr., classic Plan 9 from Outer Space. We're sure she, Ed, and Bela are all catching up right now at the big show in the sky.

Trust me, you're not missing anything good, the last one I went to was my cousin's and I'm still depressed about it.

And Zero, sorry to hear about your friend, I know exactly what its like, seeing them one day and the next they are gone. 2 years ago I had a long time friend over at my house, drinking a beer with me, after we had just come back from a day in the woods hunting. So we were sitting around talking and he said he had to leave. Not 4 hours later my family got a call from his wife telling us that he got home, and had a heart attack, and died before the ambulance could get there. He was only 53

So yeah... Live life like every moment is your last. Probably over-used but its the truth.

HEATH LEDGER

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/MMPH/249525~Heath-Ledger-Posters.jpg

The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.

At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said pills fear found near the body.

Mr. Ledger, a native of Perth, Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain”, a 2005 film. The film, based on a short story by Annie Proulx about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”

Mr. Ledger met the actress Michelle Williams while filming ‘’Brokeback Mountain.” The two actors fell into a very public romance. They had a daughter, Matilda Rose, who was born on Oct. 28, 2005. They moved to Brooklyn, but then separated last year.

Calls by The New York Times to Mara Buxbaum, a publicist for Mr. Ledger, and Steve Alexander, the actor’s agent, were not immediately returned this afternoon.

No, they are in post-production of the movie, so it will be his last film that he finished. The problem is, they were filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
which he had a role in. But i'm not that sure about what kind of role he had, because IMDB has taken down any information of the role he played, but I believe that he had the lead role, which is definitely not good.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean, one of my best friends calls me up about and hour ago, and he was like, Hey your never gonna guess what we just heard on the radio. So I say exactly what he called to tell me, and we start talking about how horrible it is, and how we're glad that he finished shooting The Dark Knight, and then his dumb bitch of a fiance who has her head shoved so far up her own ass she could tell you how long her intestines are(As you can guess I don't like her much,) just happens to chime in with "Oh he died of an overdose from drugs he got from Mary Kate Olsen." God I want to slap her so much, because she just had this sound of delight, like she knows exactly how everything happened.
So yeah, stupid people will think what they want to, and are gonna tell everybody that what they hear is fact. So don't listen to anybody until news about what exactly happened comes out.
And to tell you the truth, it fucking disgusts me the way the vultures are allready circling. He hasn't been dead 6 hours and allready people are trying to find out what happened and how it happened and who he got it from. Its fucking disgusting, let the guy get some fucking peace. He died, and don't get me wrong, I'm sad that this happened, but its none of mine or anyone else' fucking business (besides his loved ones of course.)

The Associated Press and other sources have reported that actor Christopher Allport, who appeared in a number of horror films and TV shows, was killed last weekend in a landslide sparked by the recent storms that have lashed Southern California. Allport was one of two people reported missing from a ski resort in Wrightwood, CA; the other was found alive, but the 60-year-old actor’s body was discovered by searchers, one of three victims claimed by avalanches in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Allport began his career in the early ’70s, and had roles in the 1979 slasher flick SAVAGE WEEKEND, Gary Sherman’s 1981 cult chiller DEAD & BURIED (as the ill-fated Freddie the photographer), Tobe Hooper’s 1986 INVADERS FROM MARS remake, 1996’s killer-snowman opus JACK FROST and its 2000 sequel.

He also appeared in genre TV series such as the ’80s TWILIGHT ZONE revival, KINDRED: THE EMBRACED and THE X-FILES.

Roy Scheider, who was Oscar nominated for "The French Connection" and for "All That Jazz," but best known for his role as the fearless police chief in "Jaws," died Sunday at 75.

http://www.nndb.com/people/646/000023577/roy-scheider.jpg

Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock a hospital spokesman said. The hospital did not release his cause of death, but he had been diagnosed with myeloma in 2004 and subsequently underwent a bone marrow transplant.

Born in Orange, N.J., he competed in baseball and boxing before turning to theater in college, where he studied drama at Rutgers and Franklin and Marshall. After a stint in the military, he went onstage in New York, appearing with the New York Shakespeare Festival and winning an Obie for the play "Stephen D."

After appearing on soap "The Edge of Night," he launched his film career with "The Curse of the Living Corpse." His material started to improve with "Star!," "Paper Lion," "Stiletto" and "Puzzle of a Downfall Child," although he continued to guest on soaps such as "Love of Life" and "Secret Storm."

His career took a major leap forward when he co-starred with Jane Fonda in "Klute" and then alongside Gene Hackman in "The French Connection," netting his first Oscar nom for the role. He played a cop again in actioner "The Seven-Ups."

Many viewers identify Scheider with his role as police chief Martin Brody in Steven Spielberg's 1975 "Jaws." He reprised the role in "Jaws 2" after appearing in "Marathon Man" and "Sorcerer."

Scheider's career hit another high point with Bob Fosse's 1979 "All That Jazz," in which he was Oscar-nommed for his role as the womanizing choreographer Joe Gideon.

From then on he was a durable thesp often called upon to play U.S. presidents or military officers, appearing in films including "Blue Thunder," "2010," "52 Pick-Up," and "The Russia House." He had a recurring role on "SeaQuest DSV" and appeared on TV shows including "Third Watch" and "Law and Order: Criminal Intent."

He also appeared in "The Peacekeeper," "Red Serpent," "The Punisher" and "The Rainmaker." In his last role, he played a policeman in the film "Iron Cross."

He is survived by his wife Brenda and two daughters and a son.

The Creature is no more...

Sad news as Bloody-Disgusting.com have received a call that Ben Chapman, the last of the original Universal Monsters, has passed away today in Hawaii.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/Kusanivy/FanExpo06/100_2732.jpg

Chapman was best know as the actor that played THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON.

Talent scouts from Universal-International "discovered" Chapman upon his return from the Korean War, and for a year he became a U-I stock player--and, at six-foot-five, an ideal choice for the finny title role of The Gillman in "Creature from the Black Lagoon".

OTTAWA (AFP) - Canadian blind rocker Jeff Healey, who uniquely played his guitar flat on his lap, has died of cancer on the eve of his latest album release, his publicist said in a statement.

Healey, 41, died in a Toronto hospital of a rare cancer, retino blastoma, that he had fought since birth and which claimed his eyesight at the age of one.

"Visually, Jeff was an intriguing player to watch, because he played guitar -- by any conventional standard -- all wrong, with it flat across his lap," his publicist Richard Flohil told broadcaster CTV on Sunday.

"But he was a remarkable, a virtuoso player."

A former drummer for the Swedish pop band ABBA has been found dead in the garden of his house on the island of Majorca.

Ola Brunkert, 62, is believed to have been the only session musician to have appeared on all the group's recordings.

A police spokeswoman said an autopsy was being carried out but investigations indicated the death was an accident and no foul play is suspected.

She said a neighbour found Mr Brunkert's body on Sunday in the garden of his house in the town of Arta.

Police believe he fell and cut his neck indoors. He then apparently tried to leave the house to seek help but collapsed in the garden.

Anthony Minghella, the Oscar-winning director and writer of “The English Patient,” has died suddenly. He was 54.

A spokesman said he suffered a brain hemorrhage at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, where he had undergone a routine operation on his neck.

Minghella most recently directed the BBC/HBO telepic “No 1 Ladies Detective Agency,” based on Alexander McCall Smith’s novel set in Botswana, which is due to premiere March 23 on BBC1.

His last movie was “Breaking and Entering.” His other credits include “Cold Mountain,” “The Talented Mr Ripley” and “Truly Madly Deeply.”

He recently stepped down as chairman of the British Film Institute. He was a partner with Sydney Pollack in Mirage Enterprises.

Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who wrote the film "2001: A Space Odyssey" with Stanley Kubrick and more than 100 books, died today in his adopted home of Sri Lanka. He was 90.

http://www.nndb.com/people/725/000023656/clarke-sm.jpg

Clarke had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair.

Clarke moved to Sri Lanka in 1956, lured by his interest in marine diving which he said was as close as he could get to the weightless feeling of space.

His TV programs "Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World" and "Arthur C. Clarke's World of Strange Powers" ran during the 1980s.

He based "2001" on an earlier story "The Sentinel," and then worked on the novel and the screenplay for "2001" simultaneously.

His sequel novel "2010" was made into a film directed by Peter Hyams. A film version of his book "Rendezvous with Rama" is reportedly in the works with director David Fincher.

In addition to several futuristic concepts created in "2001," Clarke was credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, decades before they became a reality. Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits.

He joined American broadcaster Walter Cronkite as commentator on the U.S. Apollo moonshots in the late 1960s.

R.I.P. Paul Scofield

Oscar-winning British thesp Paul Scofield has died at the age of 86. He had been suffering from leukemia.

http://www.nndb.com/people/950/000033851/paul-scofield.jpg

His agent Rosalind Chatto confirmed the actor, who won the best actor Academy award in 1967 for his portrayal of Sir Thomas More in “A Man For All Seasons,” passed away Wednesday in a hospital near his home in the south of England.

Though Scofield was more prolific on stage- Richard Burton once remarked “of the 10 greatest moments in theatre, eight are Scofield’s”- the thesp often sparkled when plying his trade on the big-screen.

Aside from his role in “A Man For All Seasons”- a part he also performed on stage - Scofield drew plaudits for his perfs in Tony Richardson’s “A Delicate Balance” alongside KatherIne Hepburn in 1973, Kenneth Branagh’s 1989 adaptation of “Henry V,” Robert Redford’s “Quiz Show” in 1995, and Nicolas Hytner’s “The Crucible” the following year.

Born on Jan. 21, 1922 in Hurstpierpoint on the south coast of England, Scofield made his professional acting debut in London in January 1940.

He went on to work regularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

Scofield made an acclaimed debut on Broadway in 1961 in the stage version of “A Man For All Seasons,” winning a Tony for his efforts.

His performances were often marked by his rich voice and powerful presence. His turn as King Lear in 1971’s screen and stage version of William Shakespeare’s tragedy was voted the greatest Shakespearean performance ever in a 2004 poll of actors at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Awarded a CBE in 1956, Scofield reportedly turned down the offer of a knighthood on more than one occasion.

He was made a Companion of Honour in 2001, one of Blighty’s top honours and limited to 65 living people at any one time.

Scofield is survived by his wife, actress Joy Parker, and their two children.

Actor Richard Widmark, who earned an Oscar nomination playing a psychopath in 1947's film noir "Kiss of Death," has died aged 93, a medical official in his home state of Connecticut said on Wednesday.

Widmark was blond and slightly built during his prime and brought an edgy nervousness to the outcasts and heavies he played in Hollywood's film noir heyday -- a list of roles that The New York Times once described as a "gallery of reprobates."

Widmark, whose long career was marked by playing villains, tough guys and cowboys, died on Monday at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, the Times reported.

An official with the Connecticut's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington confirmed that Widmark had died but declined to provide further details.

Widmark's most memorable role may have been his first. As Tommy Udo, he gleefully pushed a wheelchair-bound woman down a flight of stairs in "Kiss of Death" with a maniacal laugh that made a lasting impression on moviegoers.

Widmark would go on to prove he could play a wide range of characters in more than 60 movies, but the Udo role earned him his only Oscar nomination.

"One will remember that nasty little creep with the wild eyes and high-pitched laugh, neurotic to the core, which Richard Widmark has turned into one of his finest roles," Raymond Borde and Etienne Chaumeton wrote in "A Panorama of American Film Noir 1941-1953."

'WHEN IN DOUBT, I'D LAUGH'

Widmark told an interviewer that the laugh was born of nervousness.

April 17, 2008

Hazel Court, an English actress who co-starred with the likes of Boris Karloff and Vincent Price in popular horror movies of the 1950s and '60s, has died.

She was 82.

Court died early Tuesday of a heart attack at her home near Lake Tahoe, daughter Sally Walsh said Wednesday.

While she had a substantial acting career both in England and on American TV, Court was perhaps best known for her work in such films as 1963's "The Raven." She co-starred with Price, Karloff and Peter Lorre in director Roger Corman's take on the classic Edgar Allan Poe poem.

Corman directed her in five movies. Like other "scream queens" of the era, Court often relied on her cleavage and her ability to shriek in fear and die horrible deaths for her roles.

"The Premature Burial," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Curse of Frankenstein" and "Devil Girl from Mars" helped propel her to cult status and brought her fan mail even in her later years.

"She'd probably get over 100 pieces of fan mail a month and she would reply to every single one," her daughter said.

Court had finished an autobiography, "Hazel Court - Horror Queen," which will be published in Britain, Walsh said.

The daughter of a professional cricket player, Court was born Feb. 10, 1926, in the English town of Sutton Coldfield. As a teenager, she was appearing in stage productions when she was spotted and signed by the J. Arthur Rank Organisation, which owned movie studios and theaters.

She got her first movie bit part by the time she was 18 and went on to become a popular actress and pinup girl, her daughter said.

"She was one of the great beauties of all time," Walsh said. "She was a redhead with really green eyes and almost ... the perfect face. She was on the cover of almost every magazine."

Court co-starred with Patrick O'Neal in the 1957 British TV comedy series "Dick and the Duchess." In the late 1950s, she came to the United States to work on the TV show "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."

Besides acting, Court was a commissioned sculptor and painter whose works appeared in public galleries.

Court is survived by daughters Walsh and Courtney Taylor, son Jonathan Taylor and stepdaughters Anne Taylor Fleming and Avery Taylor.

John Phillip Law, the strikingly handsome 1960s movie actor who portrayed an angel in the futuristic "Barbarella" and a lovesick Russian seaman in "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming," has died May 13 in Los Angeles.

He was 70.

http://www.nndb.com/people/494/000043365/jp-law.jpg

With vivid eyes, blond hair and imposing physique, Law was much in demand by filmmakers in the late 1960s and early '70s.

He gained wide notice in 1966 with Alan Arkin, Carl Reiner and Theo Bikel in "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming," Norman Jewison's Cold War comedy in which a Soviet submarine runs aground off a peaceful New England island town.

He played the sweet Russian youth who falls in love with a local American girl in the film, which was nominated for four Oscars including best picture, actor (Arkin) and director.

French director Roger Vadim put Law's looks to good use in his 1968 science fiction film, "Barbarella," which starred Vadim's then-wife, Jane Fonda, as a sexy space traveler in the far-away future. Law wore wings to portray Pygar, a blind angel.

"I've had more kicks out of playing far-out things," Law told the Los Angeles Times in 1966. "It's like putting on a funny face and going out in front of people and going, 'yaaaaaa.'"

He was World War I ace Baron Manfred von Richtofen in the 1971 "The Red Baron" and Charlton Heston's son in "The Hawaiians," a 1970 sequel to "Hawaii," based on James Michener's sprawling novel "Hawaii."

In Otto Preminger's 1967 film, "Hurry Sundown," he was a war veteran struggling to preserve his farm against a land speculator played by Michael Caine.

He continued his career in a variety of U.S. and foreign films and television over the past 30 years, including appearances in "The Young and the Restless" and "Murder, She Wrote."

Law was a California native, and worked in the theater in New York for a brief time before breaking into the movies, spending some time in the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center, whose directors included the great Elia Kazan.

Dick Martin, the zany half of the comedy team whose "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" took television by storm in the 1960s, making stars of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin and creating such national catch-phrases as "Sock it to me!" has died.

He was 86.

http://www.nndb.com/people/888/000022822/dick-martin-crop.jpg

Martin, who went on to become one of television's busiest directors after splitting with Dan Rowan in the late 1970s, died Saturday night of respiratory complications at a hospital in Santa Monica, family spokesman Barry Greenberg said.

"He had had some pretty severe respiratory problems for many years, and he had pretty much stopped breathing a week ago," Greenberg said.

Martin had lost the use of one of his lungs as a teenager, and needed supplemental oxygen for most of the day in his later years.

He was surrounded by family and friends when he died just after 6 p.m., Greenberg said.

"Laugh-in," which debuted in January 1968, was unlike any comedy-variety show before it. Rather than relying on a series of tightly scripted song-and-dance segments, it offered up a steady, almost stream-of-consciousness run of non-sequitur jokes, political satire and madhouse antics from a cast of talented young actors and comedians that also included Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley and announcer Gary Owens.

Presiding over it all were Rowan and Martin, the veteran nightclub comics whose standup banter put their own distinct spin on the show.

Like all straight men, Rowan provided the voice of reason, striving to correct his partner's absurdities. Martin, meanwhile, was full of bogus, often risque theories about life, which he appeared to hold with unwavering certainty.

Against this backdrop, audiences were taken from scene to scene by quick, sometimes psychedelic-looking visual cuts, where they might see Hawn, Worley and other women dancing in bathing suits with political slogans, or sometimes just nonsense, painted on their bodies. Other times, Gibson, clutching a flower, would recite nonsensical poetry or Johnson would impersonate a comical Nazi spy.

"Laugh-In" astounded audiences and critics alike. For two years the show topped the Nielsen ratings, and its catchphrases_ "Sock it to me," "You bet your sweet bippy" and "Look that up in your Funk and Wagnall's" — were recited across the country.

Stars such as John Wayne and Kirk Douglas were delighted to make brief appearances, and even Richard Nixon, running for president in 1968, dropped in to shout a befuddled sounding, "Sock it to me!" His opponent, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, was offered equal time but declined because his handlers thought it would appear undignified.

The novelty of "Laugh-In" diminished with each season, however, and as major players such as Hawn and Tomlin moved on to bigger careers, interest in the series faded.

After the show folded in 1973, Rowan and Martin capitalized on their fame with a series of high-paid engagements around the country. They parted amicably in 1977.

"Dan has diabetes, and his doctor advised him to cool it," Martin told The Associated Press at the time.

Rowan, a sailing enthusiast, spent his last years touring the canals of Europe on a houseboat. He died in 1987.

Martin moved onto the game-show circuit, but quickly tired of it. After he complained about the lack of challenges in his career, fellow comic Bob Newhart's agent suggested he take up directing.

He was reluctant at first, but after observing on "The Bob Newhart Show," he decided to try. He would recall later that it was "like being thrown into the deep end of the swimming pool and being told to sink or swim."

Soon he was one of the industry's busiest TV directors, working on numerous episodes of "Newhart" as well as such shows as "In the Heat of the Night," "Archie Bunker's Place" and "Family Ties."

After an early failed marriage, he was for years a confirmed bachelor. He finally settled down in middle age, marrying Dolly Read, a former bunny at the Playboy Club in London.

Survivors include his wife and two sons, actor Richard Martin and Cary Martin.

At Martin's request there will be no funeral, Greenberg said.

Martin lost the use of his right lung when he was 17, something that never bothered him until his final years, when he required oxygen 18 hours a day.

Arriving for a party celebrating his 80th birthday, he fainted and was treated by doctors and paramedics.

Talent scouts from Universal-International "discovered" Chapman upon his return from the Korean War, and for a year he became a U-I stock player--and, at six-foot-five, an ideal choice for the finny title role of The Gillman in "Creature from the Black Lagoon".

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t226/mooning_out_the_window/wjat.jpg

This was reported on his official website :-

"Ben Chapman passed away at 12:15 am Hawaii time on Thursday, February 21 at the VA hospital in Honolulu. His health began to deteriorate February 12 and he was admitted to the hospital on February 20. His life support was turned off Wednesday around noon and his pacemaker was turned off shortly before he died. He died peacefully with his wife, Merrilee, and son, Ben Chapman III, by his side. He was 79 years old at his death.

His body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a church near the beach in Honolulu. More information will be distributed as it becomes known."

R.I.P. Ben. You will be missed.:(

bummed me out - i met him in Aug 2006, and he was lively and a lot of fun. He chatted with my son for several minutes.

I cant believe he wasn't going to continue on for another 20 years.

June 2 (Bloomberg) -- Bo Diddley, the rock 'n' roll originator with the rectangular guitar whose signature beat influenced musicians from Buddy Holly to the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and Bruce Springsteen, has died. He was 79.

Diddley died at his home in Archer, Florida, early today, according to his publicist, Susan Clary. The cause was heart failure. In May 2007, he suffered a stroke during a performance in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He scored only a few hits in more than 40 years of recording, yet Diddley's impact on the development of rock 'n' roll places him in a pantheon with Chuck Berry and Little Richard. The maracas-fueled sound he introduced in 1955 on the song ``Bo Diddley'' evolved into what Rolling Stone magazine called ``the most plagiarized rhythm of the 20th century.''

The beat -- bomp a-bomp a-bomp bomp bomp -- became the driving force on songs such as Holly's ``Not Fade Away'' (1957), which the Stones recorded and the Grateful Dead used in live shows for years; Johnny Otis's ``Willie and the Hand Jive'' (1958); the Strangeloves' ``I Want Candy''(1965); The Who's ``Magic Bus'' (1968); the Stooges' ``1969'' (1969), Springsteen's ``She's the One'' (1975); and U2's ``Desire'' (1988).

The Stones' version of ``Not Fade Away'' in 1964 became their first top-10 hit in the U.K. and first U.S. release. In its early days, the band often opened its shows with the number.

``We did it with a Bo Diddley beat, which at the time was very avant garde for a white band to be playing Bo Diddley's stuff,'' said Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. ``It was a very popular rhythm for us in clubs.''

Earlier this week, we learned that two influential STAR TREK personalities had passed.

Joseph Pevney, who directed the beloved Original Series episodes like CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER, AMOK TIME, and THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES left us - he was 96 years old.

Also, Alexander Courage, a composer for The Original Series (including its legendary fanfare/theme music) had slipped away.

Now comes word that one of STAR TREK's unsung heroes is gone.

Robert H. Justman was a producer on The Original Series as well as the inaugural season of THE NEXT GENERATION. He was 81.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b0/RobertJustman.jpg/225px-RobertJustman.jpg

Known for guiding with a firm-but-even hand, Justman demonstrated vast appreciation for the creative process. Producers will often micro-manage budgets with little concern for the impact their scrutiny will have on story lines, characterization, atmosphere, and so forth. Justman worked feverishly to preserve, and even enhance, the intent of writers and creators...inventively laboring to realize their ideas whenever, and however, possible.

Sometimes his contributions were subtle - like conjuring a way to create "alien" skies on planetary sets by using gels & lights instead of significantly more costly (and sometimes cost prohibitive) painted backgrounds. In other instances, his impact was both profound and indelible - like his campaign to cast a moderately known British actor named Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard when THE NEXT GENERATION was ramping up. Many weren't so sure...Justman was.

Justman wrote a great deal about his adventures on (and contributions to) STAR TREK in a book entitled INSIDE STAR TREK: THE REAL STORY, co-authored with Herbert F. Solow...Desilu's Execustive in Charge of Production for The Original Series.

"There seems to be a big 'Star Trek' convention and everyone is going,"..."Everyone is getting beamed up," says Justman's son Jonathan about the recent passing of his father and other STAR TREK alum, in an LA Times article.

Inside Star Trek is a great book, and Justman was a great producer. Likewise Courage as a composer. And Pevney- what a talent.

Three tremendous losses. The three of them gave me endless hours of enjoyment.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A family spokesman says actor-director-producer Mel Ferrer, who starred in scores of movies and directed his late wife, Audrey Hepburn in numerous others, has died at age 90.

Mike Mena says Ferrer died Monday at his ranch near Santa Barbara, surrounded by family and friends.

Known for his good looks, Ferrer starred in such films as "Lili," "War and Peace" and "The Sun Also Rises.

In 1967, he produced the film classic "Wait Until Dark," a terrifying thriller in which Hepburn played a blind woman terrorized in her apartment by drug dealers.

Tim Russert, the South Buffalo native who became the influential host of NBC's "Meet the Press," died unexpectedly Friday morning.

Russert, 58, collapsed while taping voice-overs for his weekly "Meet the Press" show at NBC's Washington, D.C. studios. No other details were immediately available.

Born Timothy John Russert Jr. in South Buffalo, he graduated from Canisius High School, John Carroll University and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Russert was a member of the bar associations in both New York state and the District of Columbia.

After graduating from Cleveland-Marshall, Russert entered the world of politics, first on the Senate staff of the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan and in 1982, he worked on Mario Cuomo's successful campaign to be elected New York governor.

Russert joined NBC News in 1984 and the following year supervised the Peacock network's live broadcasts of the "NBC Today" show from Rome. Russert during those shows was able to convince Pope John Paul II to make an appearance on the show.

In December 1991, he was named host of "Meet the Press."

Russert wrote two books "Big Russ and Me" in 2004 that detailed the role his father, Tim Russert Sr., played in his life and "Wisdom of Our Fathers" in 2006.

In addition, Russert received 48 honorary doctorates and this year Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Special effects and makeup guru Stan Winston passed away on Sunday, June 15th in Los Angeles, California. Winston was best known for his work for the "Terminator," "Jurassic Park" and "Predator" series, and Edward Scissorhands. The 4-time Oscar winner most recently worked on Iron Man and was special effects supervisor on the upcoming Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

Stan Winston, one of the great names in special effects, has died at age 62.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i142/Casey_s_b/Through%20The%20Mail%20and%20In-Person/Actors/004ac9f3.jpg

The Oscar-winning visual effects artist died at his home Sunday evening surrounded by family after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a representative from Stan Winston Studio.

Winston won visual effects Oscars for 1986's "Aliens", 1992's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and 1993's "Jurassic Park,” for which he created animatronic dinosaurs that complimented the film’s digitally-animated creatures.

For decades, Winston’s robotic/animatronic creatures were the best in the industry and his prosthetic makeup was among the best available. “Iron Man” visual effects supervisor John Nelson - “Stan was the man when it came to making those kind of prosthetic effects, he was the guy. If you look at the litany of other good people in the business, they tend to be people who worked for Stan.”

Stan Winston Studios did the practical Iron Man suit for this year’s Marvel/Paramount blockbuster but Winston himself was not actively involved with the shoot.

Steven Spielberg, who worked with Winston on several films, said in a statement “Stan was a fearless and courageous artist/inventor and for many projects, I rode his cutting edge from teddy bears to aliens to dinosaurs. My world would not have been the same without Stan. What I will miss most is his easy laugh every time he said to me, ‘Nothing is impossible.’”

“It was a perfect compliment to the stuff thwat we were doing,” said Dennis Muren, who supervised the digital effects on “Jurassic Park.”

“His creatures would work with the actors and when you put the two together the audience was confused, and sometimes we were too, about who had done what.”

But Stan had always said it shouldn’t be all one or all the other, it should be a combination of the two.”

Eric Roth, executive director of the Visual Effects Society said “It’s a big loss. Our industry has lost one of its giants, someone who has had a tremendous impact on helping tell stories with the use of effects.”

Producer Gale Anne Hurd, who worked with Winston on the “Terminator” franchise and on “The Relic,” exprssed shock at the news, as Winston had refused to discuss his illness outside his intimate circle.

Hurt recalled that she and helmer James Cameron first approached makeup artist Dick Smith to do the prosthetic effects on “The Terminator.” Smith declined but recommended Winston, saying “One day you’ll thank me.”

Hurd said of Winston. “He never looked at anything as a problem, it was always an opportunity. I never saw him defeatist, regardless of what may have happened. And he had an incredible childlike passion for films and for makeup effects and animatronics. Having him on set, regardless of whether you were going into your 19th hour or your first, he always gave 100 % and inspired everyone around him.”

The conference room at Winston’s Van Nuys studio was long one of the most effective sales tools any effects company could hope for, with life-sized creatures including the queen alien from “Aliens,” the lunging out of the walls toward the conference table on all sides.

Winston is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, daughter, brother and four grandchildren.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the 1978 case, Federal Communications Commission vs. Pacifica Foundation, the top U.S. court ruled that the words cited in Carlin's routine were indecent, and that the government's broadcast regulator could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening.

Carlin's comedic sensibility often came back to a central theme: humanity is doomed.

"I don't have any beliefs or allegiances. I don't believe in this country, I don't believe in religion, or a god, and I don't believe in all these man-made institutional ideas," he told Reuters in a 2001 interview.

Carlin, who wrote several books and performed in many television comedy specials, is survived by his wife Sally Wade, and daughter Kelly Carlin McCall.

He was 44.

Born and raised in British Columbia, he started out co-producing films with his brother Robert Vince. His early producing credits include "Café Romeo," "Samurai Cowboy," "Breaking Point" and "Killer."

He was producer on two "Air Bud" movies as well as "Snow Walker," "Saved!" and "Bullet Proof Heart."

After his Oscar nom for "Capote" in 2005, he went on to work on productions including "Push," "Stone of Destiny" and Terry Gilliam's upcoming "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus."

"I enjoyed his maverick ways, his passion for film and his love of life," said Pierce Brosnan, who starred in and co-produced "Butterfly on a Wheel" with Vince in 2007.

Vince was also instrumental in the restoration of Vancouver's Golden Harvest Theater, which he transformed into a boutique theater for private screenings.

In addition to his brother Robert, he is survived by his wife Cynthia Miles, two sons, a daughter, his parents and three sisters.

~ R.I.P ~

(Not to take anything away from his death but I can't believe how terribly tragic Gilliam's next film is turning out to be. I know he seems unlucky but this is seems like another impossible turn of events.)

Estelle Getty, best known for her long-running stint of the classic 80s sitcom “The Golden Girls”, has passed away at the age of 84.

Getty, who had won a Golden Globe and American Comedy award for her role on the aforementioned sitcom, had suffered from dementia.

Her other credits included “Tootsie”, “Stop or my Mom will Shoot!” and “Mask”. Her last on-screen appearance was in the Alfred Molina-starring sitcom “Ladies Man” in 2000.

Though she’ll always be Sophia from “The Golden Girls” (a character she reprised the on four other TV series: “The Golden Palace,” “Nurses,” “Empty Nest” and “Blossom”), her part in “Mannequin” is remembered just as fondly – she was the kindly department store manager that gave wet-behind-the-ears McCarthy a job!

Rest In Peace, Estelle.

I know this was only in the Philly newspapers, but rest in peace Robert Hazard. Robert was a legend in the Philadelphia music scene, and wrote "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", which became a huge hit for Cyndi Lauper.

He died from complications from pancreatic cancer, and was 59. He leaves behind a wife and 3 children.

You will be missed, Robert. Philadelphia music will never be the same.

CHICAGO - Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper "Ocean's Eleven" and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom "The Bernie Mac Show," died Saturday at age 50.

"Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.

She said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

Recently, Mac's brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine, Mac joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language. The performance earned him a rebuke from Obama's campaign.

But despite controversy or difficulties, in his words, Mac was always a performer.

"Wherever I am, I have to play," he said in 2002. "I have to put on a good show."

Mac worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago's South Side. He began doing standup as a child, and his film career started with a small role as a club doorman in the Damon Wayans comedy "Mo' Money" in 1992. In 1996, he appeared in the Spike Lee drama "Get on the Bus."

He was one of "The Original Kings of Comedy" in the 2000 documentary of that title that brought a new generation of black standup comedy stars to a wider audience.

"The majority of his core fan base will remember that when they paid their money to see Bernie Mac ... he gave them their money's worth," Steve Harvey, one of his costars in "Original Kings," told CNN on Saturday.

Mac went on to star in the hugely popular "Ocean's Eleven" franchise with Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

His turn with Ashton Kutcher in 2005's "Guess Who" topped the box office. It was a comedy remake of the classic Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn drama "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" — with Mac as the black dad who's shocked that his daughter is marrying a white man.

Mac also had starring roles in "Bad Santa," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Transformers."

In the late 1990s, he had a recurring role in "Moesha," the UPN network comedy starring pop star Brandy.

The comedian drew critical and popular acclaim with his Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show," which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006.

The series about a man's adventures raising his sister's three children, won a Peabody Award in 2002. At the time, judges wrote they chose the sitcom for transcending "race and class while lifting viewers with laughter, compassion — and cool."

The show garnered Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for Mac.

"But television handcuffs you, man," he said in a 2001 Associated Press interview. "Now everyone telling me what I CAN'T do, what I CAN say, what I SHOULD do, and asking, `Are blacks gonna be mad at you? Are whites gonna accept you?'"

He also was nominated for a Grammy award for best comedy album in 2001 along with his "The Original Kings of Comedy" co-stars, Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer.

In 2007, Mac told David Letterman on CBS' "Late Show" that he planned to retire soon.

"I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit," Mac told Letterman. "I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977."

Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough on Oct. 5, 1957, in Chicago. He grew up on the city's South Side, living with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather was the deacon of a Baptist church.

In his 2004 memoir, "Maybe You Never Cry Again," Mac wrote about having a poor childhood — eating bologna for dinner — and a strict, no-nonsense upbringing.

"I came from a place where there wasn't a lot of joy," Mac told the AP in 2001. "I decided to try to make other people laugh when there wasn't a lot of things to laugh about."

Mac's mother died of cancer when he was 16. In his book, Mac said she was a support for him and told him he would surprise everyone when he grew up.

"Woman believed in me," he wrote. "She believed in me long before I believed."

Isaac Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless "Theme From Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards, died Sunday, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. He was 65.

A family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill and he was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, according to the sheriff's office. The cause of death was not immediately known.

In the early 1970s, Hayes laid the groundwork for disco, for what became known as urban-contemporary music and for romantic crooners like Barry White. And he was rapping before there was rap.

His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show "South Park."

The album "Hot Buttered Soul" made Hayes a star in 1969. His shaven head, gold chains and sunglasses gave him a compelling visual image.

"Hot Buttered Soul" was groundbreaking in several ways: He sang in a "cool" style unlike the usual histrionics of big-time soul singers. He prefaced the song with "raps," and the numbers ran longer than three minutes with lush arrangements.

"Jocks would play it at night," Hayes recalled in a 1999 Associated Press interview. "They could go to the bathroom, they could get a sandwich, or whatever."

Next came "Theme From Shaft," a No. 1 hit in 1971 from the film "Shaft" starring Richard Roundtree.

"That was like the shot heard round the world," Hayes said in the 1999 interview.

At the Oscar ceremony in 1972, Hayes performed the song wearing an eye-popping amount of gold and received a standing ovation. TV Guide later chose it as No. 18 in its list of television's 25 most memorable moments. He won an Academy Award for the song and was nominated for another one for the score. The song and score also won him two Grammys.

"The rappers have gone in and created a lot of hit music based upon my influence," he said. "And they'll tell you if you ask."

Hayes was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

"I knew nothing about the business, or trends and things like that," he said. "I think it was a matter of timing. I didn't know what was unfolding."

It all started at Stax
A self-taught musician, he was hired in 1964 by Stax Records of Memphis as a backup pianist, working as a session musician for Otis Redding and others. He also played saxophone.

He began writing songs, establishing a songwriting partnership with David Porter, and in the 1960s they wrote such hits for Sam and Dave as "Hold On, I'm Coming" and "Soul Man."

All this led to his recording contract.

In 1972, he won another Grammy for his album "Black Moses" and earned a nickname he reluctantly embraced. Hayes composed film scores for "Tough Guys" and "Truck Turner" besides "Shaft." He also did the song "Two Cool Guys" on the "Beavis and Butt-Head Do America" movie soundtrack in 1996.

Additionally, he was the voice of Nickelodeon's "Nick at Nite" and had radio shows in New York City (1996 to 2002) and then in Memphis.

He was in several movies, including "It Could Happen to You" with Nicolas Cage, "Ninth Street" with Martin Sheen, "Reindeer Games" starring Ben Affleck and the blaxploitation parody "I'm Gonna Git You, Sucka."

In the 1999 interview, Hayes described the South Park cook as "a person that speaks his mind; he's sensitive enough to care for children; he's wise enough to not be put into the 'whack' category like everybody else in town -- and he l-o-o-o-o-ves the ladies."

But Hayes angrily quit the show in 2006 after an episode mocked his Scientology religion. "There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," he said.

Co-creator creators Matt Stone responded that Hayes "has no problem -- and he's cashed plenty of checks -- with our show making fun of Christians." A subsequent episode of the show seemingly killed off the Chef character.

Hayes was born in 1942 in a tin shack in Covington, Tenn., about 40 miles north of Memphis. He was raised by his maternal grandparents after his mother died and his father took off when he was 1 1/2. The family moved to Memphis when he was 6.

Hayes wanted to be a doctor, but got redirected when he won a talent contest in ninth grade by singing Nat King Cole's "Looking Back."

He held down various low-paying jobs, including shining shoes on the legendary Beale Street in Memphis. He also played gigs in rural Southern juke joints where at times he had to hit the floor because someone began shooting.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jerry Reed, a singer who became a good ol' boy actor in car chase movies like "Smokey and the Bandit," has died of complications from emphysema at 71.

His longtime booking agent, Carrie Moore-Reed, no relation to the star, said Reed died early Monday.

"He's one of the greatest entertainers in the world. That's the way I feel about him," Moore-Reed said.

Sony BMG Nashville Chairman Joe Galante called Reed a larger-than-life personality.

"Everything about Jerry was distinctive: his guitar playing, writing, voice and especially his sense of humor," Galante said. "I was honored to have worked with him."

Reed's catalog of country chart hits, from 1967 through 1983, were released under the label group's RCA imprint.

As a singer in the 1970s and early 1980s, Reed had a string of hits that included "Amos Moses," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "East Bound and Down," "She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft)" and "The Bird."

In the mid-1970s, he began acting in movies such as "Smokey and the Bandit" with Burt Reynolds, usually as a good ol' boy. But he was an ornery heavy in "Gator," directed by Reynolds, and a hateful coach in 1998's "The Waterboy," starring Adam Sandler.

Reynolds gave him a shiny black 1980 Trans Am like the one they used in "Smokey and the Bandit."

Reed and Kris Kristofferson paved the way for Nashville music personalities to make inroads into films. Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers (TV movies) followed their lead.

"I went around the corner to motion pictures," he said in a 1992 AP interview.

Reed had quadruple bypass surgery in June 1999.

Born in Atlanta, Reed learned to play guitar at age 8 when his mother bought him a $2 guitar and showed him how to play a G-chord.

He dropped out of high school to tour with Ernest Tubb and Faron Young.

At 17, he signed his first recording contract, with Capitol Records.

He moved to Nashville in the mid-1960s where he caught the eye of Chet Atkins.

He first established himself as a songwriter. Elvis Presley recorded two of his songs, "U.S. Male" and "Guitar Man" (both in 1968). He also wrote the hit "A Thing Called Love," which was recorded in 1972 by Johnny Cash. He also wrote songs for Brenda Lee, Tom Jones, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and the Oak Ridge Boys.

Reed was voted instrumentalist of the year in 1970 by the Country Music Association.

He won a Grammy Award for "When You're Hot, You're Hot" in 1971. A year earlier, he shared a Grammy with Chet Atkins for their collaboration, "Me and Jerry." In 1992, Atkins and Reed won a Grammy for "Sneakin' Around."

Reed continued performing on the road into the late 1990s, doing about 80 shows a year.

"I'm proud of the songs, I'm proud of things that I did with Chet (Atkins), I'm proud that I played guitar and was accepted by musicians and guitar players," he told the AP in 1992.

In a 1998 interview with The Tennessean, he admitted that his acting ability was questionable.

"I used to watch people like Richard Burton and Mel Gibson and think, `I could never do that.'

"When people ask me what my motivation is, I have a simple answer: Money."

Amos Moses

Yeah here comes Amos
Now Amos Moses was a Cajun
He lived by himself in the swamp
He hunted alligator for a living
He'd just knock them in the head with a stump
The Louisiana law gonna get you Amos
It ain't legal hunting alligator down in the swamp boy

Now everyone blamed his old man
For making him mean as a snake
When Amos Moses was a boy
His daddy would use him for alligator bait
Tie a rope around his neck and throw him in the swamp
Alligator man in the Louisiana bayou
About forty-five minutes south of Tippitoe Louisiana
Lived a man called Dr. Mills South and his pretty wife Hannah
They raised up a son who could eat his weight in groceries
Named him after a man of the cloth
Called him Amos Moses

Now the folks around south Louisiana
Said Amos was a hell of a man
He could trap the biggest meanest alligator
And he'd just use one hand
That's all he got left cause an alligator bit it
Left arm gone clear up to the elbow

Well the sheriff caught wind that Amos was up in the swamp
Trading alligator skins
So he snuck in the swamp gonna get the boy
But he never came out
Well I wonder where the Louisiana sheriff went to
Well you can sure get lost in the Louisiana bayou
About forty-five minutes south of Tippitoe Louisiana
Lived a cat named Dr. Mills South and his pretty wife Hannah
They raised up a son who could eat his weight in groceries
Named him after a man of the cloth
Called him Amos Moses

I know son
Make it count son
About forty-five minutes south of Tippitoe Louisiana...

Oh, and hate me if you want, I could care less about Niel Young, his voice is pain to me.

It was meant to be a holiday
Building castles by the sea
Another way to live for you and me
Time to pause, consider what we've done
The wind is blowing, so come,
Let's take a holiday

How was I to know quite so soon
That dreams can turn a life,
Around it seems
There is no single way to live our days
Between these lines I know you see a man
Who's not quite sure who he is
Or where he stands

Sail on
Sail on, across the sea
Ride the waves, feel the breeze
Sail on
There's no other way I'd rather be

Destiny, reality are just a dream
Raise the sails, the wind is free
Every day I become more confused
Which way to go, how to choose

Back at home, what holds me here
Shut in not moving, only half a life
Clouds hang heavy, they leave me cold
It doesn't have to be this way
The wind is blowing, so come,
Let's take a holiday

Sail on
Sail on, across the sea
Ride the waves, feel the breeze
Sail on
There's no other way I'd rather be

Whitfield was a longtime producer for the Motown label who, during the 1960s and '70s, injected rock and psychedelic touches into the label's soul music. Many of his biggest hits were co-written with Barrett Strong, with whom he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.

The two won the Grammy in 1972 for best R&B song for the Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." Whitfield won another Grammy in 1976 for best original TV or motion picture score for "Car Wash."

Whitfield also worked as a producer for the Temptations and others.

Many of Whitfield's songs from that era, including Edwin Starr's 1970 "War" and the Temptations' 1970 "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)," have a strong political tone.

In a statement, Motown great Smokey Robinson hailed Whitfield as "one of the most prolific songwriters and record producers of our time. He will live forever through his great music."

Among Whitfield's other songs, according to the Songwriters Hall Web site, are "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep," ''Cloud Nine" and "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)," all hits for the Temptations; and "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby," a 1969 hit for Marvin Gaye.

Just last week, Gaye's version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," from 1968, was ranked at No. 65 in Billboard magazine's compilation of the top singles of the past 50 years. It was also a hit for Gladys Knight and the Pips, in 1967.

That's actually the first idea I had of who it was...must've KIND OF recognised him but didn't want to take a stab and insult anyones memory if I was wrong, ha.
That sucks...I saw butch cassidy and sundance a few times, and definately remember the towering inferno, although probably not the films he'll be remembered for...
Not to mention...I love the salad dressings...dammit.
Ah well, R.I.P, another one gone.

if you want to see a great later Paul Newman film, a good one to watch in his memory is Nobody's Fool.

a very funny film - and a great vehicle to show that the man was still vital right to the end

Cool, I'll have a look.
Just reads he actually gave most of his "newmans own" money to charity.
In excess of $200m?
Even if it was for tax reasons, that's pretty damn decent.

This is truely a sincere loss. Not only was he one of our country's finest actors, he was a humanitarian, donating hundreds of millions of dollars to charities of the years.

Paul Newman, you will be sorely missed. RIP.

This is the single biggest loss in the history of the humane side of Hollywood. Ever.

(CNN) -- Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died of cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut.

He was 83.

Paul Newman's handsome face and solid acting made him a popular and respected film star.

He died Friday, according to spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic.

Newman attained stardom in the 1950s and never lost the movie-star aura, appearing in such classic films as "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Exodus," "The Hustler," "Cool Hand Luke," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Sting" and "The Verdict."

He finally won an Oscar in 1986 -- on his eighth try -- for "The Color of Money," a sequel to "The Hustler." He later received two more Oscar nominations. Among his other awards was the Motion Picture Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

"Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness," said Robert Forrester, vice chairman of the actor's Newman's Own Foundation. "His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much."

In 1982, Newman and his friend A.E. Hotchner founded Newman's Own, a food company that produced food ranging from pasta sauces to salad dressing to chocolate chip cookies.

"The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films," Newman once wryly noted.

To date, the company -- which donates all profits to charities such as Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang camps -- has given away more than $200 million. Newman established the camp to benefit gravely ill children.

"He saw the camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back and raise a little hell," Forrester said.

Today, there are 11 Hole in the Wall Gang camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Some 135,000 children have attended the camps -- free of charge.

The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps "is part of his living legacy, and for that we remain forever grateful," the association said in a statement.

"We are greatly saddened by his passing. His leadership and spirit can never be replaced. But he has left us strong and confident."

In 2007, Newman said he was retiring from acting, saying he'd lost confidence in his abilities. Still, he marveled at his own resilience.

"You can't be as old as I am without waking up with a surprised look on your face every morning: 'Holy Christ, whaddya know - I'm still around!' It's absolutely amazing that I survived all the booze and smoking and the cars and the career."

Newman, who was married to Jackie Witt from 1949 to 1957, is survived by his wife, Joanne Woodward (wife of 50 years), and five children.

This might sound a little weird, but although i was surprised he died, dont be too upset.

I haven heard a word about Paul Newman in years, or of all that he had been doing, but now everythign he has done just got a ton of free publicity: only good can come from that. This coincides with me seeing a review of his spaghetti sauce, saying it was the best out there. He was a good man with high standards, he made great movies, lived a long, full life, and left behind a wake of great accomplishments that can continue on long past him.

If anyone's death in the past several years has called for a good, loud, celebratory Irish wake its Paul Newman. This is definitely a case where we are just mourning our own loss: if you beleiev in an afterlife, he gets the good one.

i just wish it was more common to live past 84 ... shit it seems like the magic life line. very few people make it to 90.

i want to live to be at least 200.
