Since the rumors of a new Nightmare on Elm Street film have surfaced online, FEARnet is the first to hear it right from the mouth of that hideously disfigured child murderer! We just talked to Robert Englund (known by fans as the iconic Freddy Krueger) about his upcoming directorial venture Killer Pad (full interview soon) but in the mean time got his official word about the rumors of a new Nightmare on Elm Street film.

Recently there has been some buzz online about a new Nightmare on Elm Street film. Have you heard anything about this?

“I don’t know if it’s going to be Nightmare on Elm Street the original remake-which is not a bad idea especially with the success of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween-and get some new director to breathe new life into it. I always thought there was room for a prequel. I would be interested in being in that! It’s funny because they are all good. Texas Chainsaw Massacre the original was great and the original Halloween was great and some people even think that the original Nightmare on Elm Street is the best of them all. I don’t know if you’d want to remake it but it all happens sooner or later. There have been some spin-offs talked about with Freddy and Jason and Michael Myers which is interesting but maybe that’s kind of silly. Maybe one was enough. At one time there had been a prequel to Nightmare on Elm Street. I haven’t read that script but I heard things about it that John McNaughton the director of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer might direct it. That was kind of interesting. That’s the one I would be interested in being involved with.”

The Prequel?

“Well yeah because I’d obviously get to do it without the make up. Even though I’m getting old I’m not getting too old to play Freddy. I always figured by the time he was all burned and everything I figured he was in his 40’s anyway. I could pull that off. It’s going to be interesting to see what they do with it.”

It seems like they're going the remake route with this.

Why not? If then they're gonna do it anyways, might as well embrace it and hope for the best.

To tell you the truth, I'd like to see if anybody else could actually pull off a decent Freddy. No offense to Englund, he MADE Freddy, but what happens when Englund dies? Is the whole series going to die off just because he's gone? I'd like to see more NOES movies, I'm just wondering if they can do it without him.

Which can either totally bomb (Psycho) or be pretty good (Halloween).

I hope they make the prequel and explore that whole child killer stuff. Sick!!! No remakes please, just the prequel. With Englund as Freddy.

I think a re-do is a very good idea. The original is dated, in my opinion. We need something fresh for Freddy.

And if Englund must go... I say, why not Johnny Depp for Freddy? I mean, he can fucking do anything, and if he's wearing make-up... who cares?

Bad idea? Maybe? Yeah?

Casting any actor other than Englund to be Freedy, while he's still alive and acting, would be foolish and a disrespect for the NOES legacy. Not that I care that much for Englund's acting, but it would just be wrong. Call me a fundamentalist, but that's what I think.

Personally....if I never saw another Nightmare, Halloween, or Friday the 13th movie....I would be fine.

time to move on

unless it was something like a Abbott and Costello meets movie......hmmm.. we don't really have any comedy duo's anymore....maybe Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson meets The Monsters.....have the big three...hell the big four..throw in Leatherface.

or Jackie Chan & Chris Tucker

I'm not surprised. It's the millenium! Every films going to be fucked with. hey I hope it's decent if they do do another one. for example the remake of the tcsm way way better than i expected and the prequel was as it should be. The halloween remake way better than i expected. I have a great feeling about the friday the 13th project. Man a prequel. the exorcist prequel went down with the whole franchise. but to total the originals stand tall. well most of them...

I agree with what someone else said... Englund will die eventually. Someone has to take over.

Well, If something were to Happen to Robert then that could be dealt with then. But for now no one else should play Freddy, I'd like to see a prequal, Robert Englund as Freedy with out the prostetics. Fuck, that would be great. Probably a lot more creepy than any of the NOES movies to date. I think it was prt 5 or was it 6 where they had the flashback to him before he was burnt, he looked frightening.

Sean Pegg and Nick Frost could take on Freddy, or maybe Jason....
