I don't know how many of you have seen this, as it was only in a few select cities. I have to admit, every horror fan should really enjoy this film. This film has a few horror legends make appearances. The actors were very good, it has the very tense moments (I jumped twice), it has it's humor, that can make you laugh, but with the style of writing done, every muscle is still tightened at the same time, and well . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . it has gore, and very much of it. I am pretty sure to say that every kill I seen was original, with great death scenes, and plenty of blood shed :D The music chosen, well. . . . . . . . it was as well great. This is going into my top 5 movies of all time, it was one hell of a ride! Adam Green did a really great job, and after this enjoyment he as well is moving into one of my favorite writer and directors, Adam thanks for giving us a fun, "old school, American Horror" film, I appreciate it greatly!!
I didn't know this was out on DVD yet and it's only $10, it's a must buy for every horror fan, I promise, you will not be let down.
I really don't want to spoil anything for those who want to see it, but if you do talk about a scene please, write spoiler, and then use white font for the spoiler.

you need to check out his follow-up Spiral which hits selected cities at the beginning of Feb. and drops on DVD February 19th.
It is a taught indie thriller without gore or tits, but you'll dig it. Adam is a talented man and this film shows off his range.

I won't click on that to watch it since I believe DVD is the best experience to watch a film (other than the theater, of course).
That being said, just how good is this movie?? I haven't heard anything until about a month ago... and all I've heard is stuff like "one of the best ever". I'm tempted to just go to Best Buy and buy the damn thing on a whim, and I NEVER do that.

if you like 80s slashers you'll dig it. If you don't, don't bother. It has the story of an 80s slasher like FRIDAY 13TH with the self-awareness of SCREAM and it also owes a great deal to AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON in that is alternately funny and tense.
This is Adam Green's love letter to the genre. It is fun and funny and gory as hell with 100% in-camera effects, no CG and it's done on a tiny budget.
I think it's awesome, but I'm a little biased toward my friend Adam. I'd say, buy it.
Oh, and I agree with not downloading - it is theft, pure and simple. Justify it how you wish, but it is stealing movies. It might not hurt a major studio, but HATCHET was very low-budget. If you download it, you're taking money from my friend, who has not yet made any money from this film... no one who had anything to do with the film has made any money off it yet. Please buy the film - hell, give it as a gift to someone!

This is what I loved about this film, esp. the Pop Top. I'm glad it wasn't a major studio who was telling them what he could or couldn't do. And I also loved how he made the trailer for the film, and everyone was talking that it was a finished film, lol. This dvd is well worth the money for it, as it as well has some great extra features!! BUY IT!

I am going to get ripped when I say this but I did not like Hatchet.
It tried to be funny but really wasn't.
There was also only like one cool death scene.
I am very sorry Rod, I really tried to like it. Honest to God I did.

I thought that the death scenes were amazingly, beautifully gory... But, honestly, I just found it... lacking. Not really a whole movie. A series of good gruesomeness.

I agree. I wanted to like it. I really did. And I would go as far as to say that all of the death and/or violent scenes were very, very awesome.
But, gotta say... Slightly overrated.

Guys, don't hate me, but I have to agree with GorePhobia and ChronoGrl... this movie is lacking tremendously. I know I'm a "newb", so my opinion doesn't mean shit, but in all honesty, this is very overrated.
Everything I've read is like, "One of the greatest of all time!", "Just as good as Friday the 13th!!", "The greatest slasher flick in the past 20 years!!", "Unforgettable!!"...
... so, being a die-hard horror fan, I was like, "Sweeeeet, I must buy this movie. I won't even bother renting it... I'll just BUY the damn thing."
Here's where I went wrong.
I'll admit, it was $10.00 at Wal-Mart, so I thought I'd just go ahead and purchase it blindly. When I went home and popped it in, I was hyped to the max, and then I sat waiting PATIENTLY for something cool to happen. It never did.
The deaths are COOL, I'll give it that, and although it pains me to be this brutally honest (I'm just being honest, guys), this movie isn't very impressive.
I can name a DOZEN films better than this... High Tension... Hills Have Eyes... so on and so forth. I know the budget is totally different, but come on, it's still fair to compare.
And the humor was very dry. It's like a comedian not getting a laugh and all you hear are crickets. I didn't laugh one time... and I WANTED to love this movie. I actually TRIED HARD... it's not like I popped it in with a shitty attitude... I was very enthusiastic about it!!
It kills me to say it... but 1/5.

I still haven't seen this, I want to. But I really, really, REALLY dislike the Friday the 13th movies other than part 6. I fear it may be too similar to those.

Is this because you don't have a very good sense of humor

Don't be afraid to speak your mind here....most of us won't berate you. I surely didn't think this was the "best" horror movie to come out recently....the humor was a bit sophomoric for my taste but it was so refreshing to see a non-CGI horror movie with some great kills.

That's exactly it. I am so tired of all the CGI that it was REALLY nice to see one that didn't rely on that. Its just fun. And it doesn't really try to be anything else really.

I bought Hatchet from Bestbuy was $6 on sale. I liked it but felt the run time was a little short. Also some of the gore effects looked like they were used more than once(blood hitting tree) but maybe that was a "wink and a nod " to 80's flicks. But the end was good too. "About as classic as that fade you had in high school."
Definitely want to see Spiral.

Easily one of the most dissapointing films i've seen in years. I blame most of that to overhyping but also it was by no means over the top or realistic with the gore. For a movie that is an homage and an addition to a subgenre with just about more films than any others Hatchet is completly unable to deliver or top majority of the '80's slasher films.

^^ sums up what I think of this flick, not to mention the dire terribly written characters that just weren't funny.
Gutterballs was a more effective homage to the 80s slashers IMO.

Wow. I missed this thread when it was first created and had no idea HATCHET was so hyped.
I saw it a few months back and wasn't impressed at all.
It wasn't bad, just not even close to being deserving of the praise some of you were giving it at the beginning of the year. Even as a campy, fun, homage to 80's slashers it failed in my opinion.
