So TCM is playing La Jetée, which is the 1962 short film that 12 Monkeys is based off. I haven't seen either, but I just hit record for the former.

I've heard that 12 Monkeys contains a damn fine twist, and I'm not sure which film I want to see it in first. So my question, to anyone who knows, is this: Are the endings the same in both movies? And, if so, does anyone have a recommendation on which to watch first? I'm thinking La Jetée, but I'm very open to suggestions on this.

Please. No spoilers.

they are very different obviously since La Jetée is a short story, I would watch La Jetée first though.

absolutely

La Jetee is told purely with narration through a series of still photography. It's odd and beautiful and should e seen before 12 Monkeys

And seeing as how you haven't seen them it would be unfair of me to tell you of the endings are the same - ha! - wouldn't want to spoil either film for you

Haha, good point. I didn't think of it like that.

Thanks for the help...I'll be watching La Jetee tonight and 12 Monkeys will follow.

@Rod- Do you like 12 Monkeys? Is it a good adaptation?

I know that question wasn't directed at me, but 12 Monkeys is a classic in my opinion. Brad Pitt is also amazingly fun to watch and it's a movie you'll want to watch more than once.

I agree with Angela

it's not a "faithful adaptation" but is has plenty of Gilliam whimsy and a really fun over-the-top performance from Pitt.

Ive seen Sans Soleil (sp?) by the same director. also all narrative, no plot. pretty lame if you ask me. looks like nothing more than a compilation of travel footage...which is exactly what it is.
12 monkeys is awesome however.

I watched La Jetée last night, and loved it. It was brilliant- a tour de force if I've ever seen one.

Can't wait to watch 12 Monkeys.

my cousin had a small part in 12 monkeys - he was #11

so - on a serious note - what did you think. i adore both of these films - gilliam is one of my all-time favorites (though he has the worst luck). has anyone seen the Lost in La Mancha documentary about gilliam trying to make a film - hliarious, heart-wrenching and informative - a definite 'must-see' for any gilliam fan!

I'm waiting 'til I get back to school in a week to see 12 Monkeys...none of the libraries around here have it, and I'm too much of a cheap bastard to get it from Blockbuster.

I can't wait to see it...I love Gilliam myself.

I was quite blown away by La Jetee, though.
