Not to get off subject, but American films haven't been using Donnie Yen's full potential. He was bad-ass in that last (and shitty) Highlander movie too and he got killed off way too easily.

Oh, and I love it when Pippie Longstocking gets capped in the head in The Beyond too.

yeah i dont know maybe they just dont know who he is. maybe they havent seen all 10,000 kung fu movies hes starred in (note the sarcasm). thats the only reason i can see for such wasted talent.

I think it's just that America isn't familiar with him. I think they cast him mainly for the kung-fu fanboys (like myself). I'm giving him a couple more years, he might be the next crossover star.

You mean Master Ping? He's the best there is. He did The Matrix, Kill Bill, Black Mask, Fist of Legend (perfect martial arts film), Iron Monkey, Once Upon a Time in China, and many more. He choreographed the fighting in Crouching Tiger as well, but I don't think he had anything to with The Hulk.

Edit: The guy who directed Crouching Tiger directed The Hulk. I think that's what you mean.

Good question Avenger, I really dont consider the original TCM to be modern, I mean its a classic right up there with the original black and white horror films. The early slasher films like Friday the 13th and Halloween arent really modern anymore either. I think that since the start of the use of CGI in horror is the break off point. Give me the old school water coloring and tedious make-up effects over CGI anyday. Some of the movies we have been calling modern are going back over 25 years so I think it could go by generation maybe?

So what about the 90's then? Cuz some damn good gems slipped in during the 90's. Candyman, Nightbreed, Lord of Illusions, In the Mouth of Madness and so on.

meetthecreeper
01-17-2004, 06:33 PM
I am not knocking the 90s by any means some good horror came out then but I think since Scream spawned all these-I Know Your Final Destination You Were Screaming About Last Summer-it took a horrible turn. Hopefully we are in a recovery stage, at least the films that are coming out are paying homage to earlier films, House of 1000 corpses, TCM, Cabin Fever I even like Wrong Turn, thought it was well put together. It just seems like ideas for horror films are running out.

01-17-2004, 06:38 PM
Geez.....didn't anyone like final destination?? I gotta disagree with u partially here creeper...I know scream spawned ALOTTA shit, but, I think FD was the first film it a few years at the time to break that pattern, and put supernatural in the saddle for a while...thenafter came jeeperscreepers, and it's all going monster/supernatural from here on....I think the 90's reign of teen slashers pretty much in it's dying phase, MAYBE , or maybe not due to final destination breaking the cycle...sorry, I just can't stand to see this film lumped in with the rest of those, just IMO...

avenger00soul
01-17-2004, 06:38 PM
I know you weren't knocking the 90's. Just trying to figure out this "modern" thing. Even if he means from Scream on, there were still some damn good movies that were made during that time.

Evil Ash
01-18-2004, 06:41 PM
The modern day thing was a little... vauge. My bad.
I can't really say all modern day movies... I guess I meant all the new fad movies, like Final Destination and Jeepers Creepers. I really hate those two movies. I guess you can say if a group of teenagers can run up and say, "omg omg, that movie was SO scary!" then I probably won't like it.

Lord of Illusions is a great film, along with many 90s films. It just seems in the past few years, horror movies have gone to shit.

Digital Murders
01-18-2004, 06:46 PM
New Nightmare came out in '94. It's probably the best nightmare since the first one. Only a few good horrors came out in the 90s. NN was one of them.

what was wrong with Final Destination?!?! It wasnt scary in the sense of the word, but it really messed with your brain, it made people realize that you could die, anytime and anywhere and thats what made it "scary"

TCM overrated??? This movie has been a staple of many of the movies that came after it. Alien, made by Ridley Scott is one that comes to mind. He wanted to make TCM in space.

I am ashamed for those of you who said TCM. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but movie history itself calls TCM a great movie.

T3 was awesome

good action, much better than that matrix crap. i was very skeptical at first, but love arnie. action was great (fire engine chase), not overdone.. the computer effects were done very well too

kristanna kicked ass. plus she was driving my car!

also had some good comedy in it :-D

my governor kicks ass

but definitely.. matrix sucks. the first one was ok, action was good. but its one of those things where the story is cool, but try to get deeper and make more sense of it the idiocracy rears its ugly head... in this case 2 VERY ugly heads.

so im assuming people saw the 3rd.. how was Aaliyah in it? im wiling to bet she did a better job than keanu!! keanu has ruined all movies whether it was dracula or the 3 minutes he spent in 'rush rush'!

terminator 3 was okay but far too hyped..my brother just bragged how great it was and it wasn't as great IMO. no heart. and they didn't play the music until the end so that who car chase scene was kinda boring to me.

i will watc t3 someday, only if it costs me nothing. The terminator movies were Jim Cameron's babies, t3 has NOTHING to do with him. I have no hopes for that movie.

And the Matrix movies are very much subject to opinion. i liked all of them, but it seems pretty popular to say they sucked.

that's another one that i just never got why it was so big. i was just as excited as anyone to see that film and it wasn't very good IMO. too choppy and they tried to make it all grande and emotional. they gave it to robin b/c he played the greiving widow in good will hunting...it's supposed to be all extreme and it didn't seem like there was any real connection between he or annabella.
