Oh, Audition, for sure. Fucking horrifying. The Exorcist did it for me, too.

Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door
It's not really horror, but it did have a disturbing effect on me!

The only movie to have a horrifying, lasting impression on me was The Exorcist. Linda Blair in that make-up still haunts me in my dreams to this day.
Every horror fan has to have "The Shining". It is my favorite horror movie but here are a few other good horror movies in no particular order. Maybe wont have lasting effect but are just good movies!
Alien
American Psycho
29 Days Later/28 Weeks Later
Battle Royale
Cape Fear (1991)
Dawn of the Dead (1978+2004)
The Devil's Rejects
The Exorcist
Frailty
From Dusk Till Dawn
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
IT
Joyride
The Lost Boys
Misery
Seven
Stir of Echoes
The Thing
Wrong Turn

Oooo. This is a good thread, even if I am jumping into it a bit late...
Movies that actually SCARED the hell out of me me (and stuck with me afterwards; sometimes keeping me up at night)...
Halloween (http://imdb.com/title/tt0077651/)
The Grudge (http://imdb.com/title/tt0391198/)
The Shining (http://imdb.com/title/tt0081505/)
Session 9 (http://imdb.com/title/tt0261983/)
The Blair Witch Project (http://imdb.com/title/tt0185937/)
Alien (http://imdb.com/title/tt0078748/)
Event Horizon (http://imdb.com/title/tt0119081/)
Crazy Eights (http://imdb.com/title/tt0470993/)
The Descent (http://imdb.com/title/tt0435625/)
Crazy Eights came out of this year's After Dark's film fest 8 Films To Die For... It was absolutely incredible. A combination of Session 9 (using the backdrop of an old abandoned hospital/house) and The Grudge (being a ghost story with Japanese-influenced direction). I honestly recommend it. It left me clutching my boyfriend's hand in the theater.

Re: Audition. I REALLY liked Audition, but I found it more "horrifying" than, say, "hauntingly scary." It was delightfully grotesque, gross, cringe-worthy... But I wouldn't say that it scared me per say...
...
Re: Lynch. I love him. But he doesn't scare me. Makes me uncomfortable, yes, but doesn't scare me... I would LOVE to see him do an all-out horror movie, though. I believe he would be quite successful at it.
...
Also, I feel as though I am somehow doing my childhood (and my beloved father who LOVED showing me these movies) injustice if I omit the following:
Carnival of Souls (http://imdb.com/title/tt0055830/)
The Thing From Another World (http://imdb.com/title/tt0044121/)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (http://imdb.com/title/tt0049366/)
All three of those movies absolutely terrified me when I was younger and definitely stuck with me, kept me up at night. They don't necessarily pass the test of time with scariness per say, but I really have to give them a nostalgic nod.

A movie which i have trouble watching is Dawn Of the Dead (2004). It is a fast, angry and agressive movie. i can't really say any others, because i seem to be able to watch them eventually. this movie i tried to watch for the third time recently, and found that i could not watch it.

Thanks for the recommendations.
I watched Begotten last night with a friend, I did'nt really get into it, I think I might watch it again by myself in the night time to get the full effect.
