View Full Version : My Beef with Return of the Living Dead

Ok heres my complaint about the series that kinda kills it for me. If the Trioxin has the ability to re-animate the flesh of the dead, and it is a chemical agent- then it must fallow the laws of physics and science. You can reanimate a skeletal arm all you want, but there is no scientific way that it would be able to move on its own without muscle contraction, and theres no way you can get muscle contraction without brain activity. So if i dip a severed leg in Trioxin, physically theres no way in blue hell that its going to be able to hop around or move because there is no nerve connection and the muscles cannot contract.
See this is why i like the Romero Trinity. because they made sense giving their criteria. If it was a virus in Romeros film it would make sense that you could take down a zombie by distroying the brain, or seperating the central nervous system.
In ROTLD they directly attribute the reanimation of corpses to Trioxin, a chemical compound, yet fail to fallow up with simple common sense rules that would apply to it. Unless there is some magical force animating the flesh, theres no way a hand could just get up and walk off, theres no way a decapitated corpse would get up and run around trying to strangle people.
I mean if we're dealing with some kind of magical reanimation thats one thing, but if were going with science then there a re some basic rules that need o be fallowed. And ROTLD walks all over them.

I don't think they cared about all that when they made it. It's just a fun, popcorn movie. I'm sure it doesn't stand up to many analyses. I really don't have a good explanation.

My beef with ROTLD: It ripped off (or whatever the fans'll no doubt say it did) a far SUPERIOR series, and turned it into a comedy....that is all.

I don't think you can call it a rip-off. If several key people who worked on NOTLD are involved (co-writer and producer), it's not a rip-off. You can't rip-off yourself.

avenger..."(or whatever the fans'll no doubt say it did)"
u know, didn't mean exactly rip off, as I figured some of the same ppl were involved, but....u kinda know what I mean? I myself woulda loved those efforts to go towards continuing the original trilogy instead...ROTLD just seemed so...Troma when I saw it...

I'm a big fan of both series. I'm glad they took it in a different direction, but wouldn't mind seeing some more serious zombie flicks made.

Cheeb, I know we discussed this before, but have you seen Undead? I remember us talking about it b/c you live in Australia but I haven't seen it yet. Is it serious, or comical?

I actually just saw it about a week ago....I know Ive probably said this b4, but I hate "aussie" kinda aussie films, yknow?
Its a very good effort, it's comical, yet slightly serious, nowhere near as comical as say "dead alive" (braindead here), has quiet a cool twist to the conventional zombie flick...there's like, alien involvement to that end, but I won't say how, but I feel as though this part of the movie points to sequel potential (whatevers really going on between the zombies and the aliens) Overall I'd say worth a watch, I mean, U get to see zombies chopped in half, missing half their head, getting legs blown off....and get this...zombie fish!!! heh-heh
they supposedly had a higher budget on special fx that any other australian film ever, and that, for one, very much shows.
I think you'd like it.

Dawn is my favorite. Ken Foree is one of my favorite horror veterans. Tom Savini also kicks alot of ass in it too. It's always been a fantasy of mine to live in shopping mall and just take whatever you wanted. That probably has something to do with it too.
And on another boyhood rant. I would always play Dawn/Day of the Dead with my G.I. Joes. I would never have them at war with Cobra, just fighting zombies all the time. Anyone else do that?

Funny story. Also, I got a chance to meet Savini and Foree last year and that clenched it for me. Savini was cool and Foree was super-nice. Just another reason why Dawn is my favorite.

It happened at the Horrorfind Weekend con.
I LOVE zombies ate my neighbors. It was one of my favorite Sega games. I could play it for hours b/c it's the only game I had where two people could play at the same time. Great fun.

The only game I played as much as ZAMN was Castlevania Bloodlines, those Desert Strike games, and Eternal Champions. That's all I can remember right now anyway.

Yeah, I think part 2 was about the high point for the sonic games (well the 16-bit, not the godaweful 8-bit version)
worst 16bit sega game?
mine is - OUTLANDER
WELL, as long as u dont mind getting sidetracked, I gives no fuck either...

You just named two of my forgotten faves. Road Rash 3 was completely awesome and Zero Tolerance was my first ever 1st person shooter. I always wanted to buy that cable so you could have two people playing at once. The only problem with that is you must have two tv's, two segas, and two zero tolerance games!!!
