I have this neighbor who hangs the same light string outside his house every year. I'm not sure what it looks like, but I have heard it for several years in a row--at least five years. It's one of those musical light strings, you see, the kind that has a little electronic music box at one end. It plays "Jingle Bells" continuously, a midi version, in those cold, lifeless electronic tones. Of course, you only turn these things on at night, so they'll only play their endlessly repeating tunes when decent folk are supposed to be sleeping. Convenient, huh? It absolutely ruins any quiet a neighborhood might have in the evening.
The really wacky thing is that I am no longer annoyed when I hear it. It drove me bats the first two years. And then, slowly, my annoyance started to fade away. I can't say I enjoy it now, but I really don't mind it.
I'm horrified, however, that anyone could design such a thing. I mean, if it's a light, you don't have to look at it. But it's not so easy to block out the sound of the damn thing! It's a stupid, warped kind of product, and whoever designed it was some sort of monster, don't you think?
