christmas plans?
anything fun and/or interesting going on during your holiday season?
any traditions you'd like to share?
i always like to spend this time getting ready for christmas by watching some of those oddball christmas movies, like:
santa claus conquers the martians (http://imdb.com/title/tt0058548/)
santa claus (http://imdb.com/title/tt0053241/)
silent night, deadly night (http://imdb.com/title/tt0088117/)
etc.
and of course, some of the regular classics, too.
i also enjoy some of the great holiday listening, like bing crosby, the rat pack, elvis, the ventures, and so on.
for christmas eve, i always head up home to chicago to spend the evening with my dad's side of the family, eating a bunch of awesome food and exchanging gifts.
on christmas day, i head back here to have christmas with my mom's side, and we usually go see a movie on christmas night. this year, it'll be sweeney todd.

I've got at least 4 family christmas parties to go to for my family and my boy's. I don't know when they are yet but I hope they don't overlap.
My friends and I celebrate Crimbo every year. We plan it for after Christmas so we can ditch our families. We basically drink a lot and burn a gingerbread house. Tradition, you know? We also give silly gag gifts. Last year I got a crothless thong, so I knit my friend a bra and panties for this year. Hope they're itchy.
Other than that, I watch all my old Christmas favourites like Marry Christmas Charlie Brown, Rudolph the Red Nosed reindeer, Frosty and Santa Claus is coming to Town.

first of all: crimbo sounds awesome.
probably the strangest gag gift i ever received was a marble nose statue. it was on a base like a bust of someone might be, but instead of a bust, it was just a giant nose.
really strange. i'll post a picture of it later, if i can find it.
and lastly, good luck with all of those parties! that's crazy.

I kick off the season with the Black Christmas/Silent Night, Deadly Night double feature every year at the Grindhouse Film Fest. It's a week from Tuesday and anyone NEAR Los Angeles should come out - it's a great night of fun
It'll be sad this year without Bob Clark, but John Saxon and Olivia Hussey will be there.

My dad was always a HUGE Christmas Carol fan... We have at least 10 different versions at home... It's definitely a tradition to watch as many versions as humanly possible... My personal favorite "classic" version of A Christmas Carol is Scrooge (1951) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0044008/), starring Alastair Sim as Scrooge (I ALWAYS cry at the end when he approaches his niece-in-law and says, "Can you forgive a pig-headed old fool with no eyes to see with and no ears to hear with all these years?"). Also, my favorite quotes:
Portly Gentleman: At this festive time of year, Mr. Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time.
Ebenezer: Why? Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?
Portly Gentleman: Many can't go there; and many would rather die.
Ebenezer: If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.
My favorite modern adaptation of A Christmas Carol:
Scrooged, starring the veritable Bill Murray.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/10m-1.jpg
I ALWAYS have to watch that on Christmas Eve.
My boyfriend and I got a mini Christmas tree today. It's the first time I've gotten a Christmas Tree with a boyfriend. :D We decorated it with zombie ornaments.

I'm doing my regular tradition of finding a family and dumping a bunch of presents at someone's door.
I think I have narrowed it down:)
We will not be having family this year but are going to see some after Christmas.
So far we have watched ALL the ABC family shows including my favorite 'Rudolf The Rednose Raindeer.'

I've never seen Scrooged. I should do that.
I would watch Black Christmas, cause I love it, but it's on tv once a week from Halloween until Christmas. Looses it's fun after a while. Maybe I'll check out the remake. Obviously not as good as the original but is it any good?

I think that you should follow the ancient tradition of bedecking the proverbial Christmas Tree with candles by setting your roommates on fire.

Sounds great, Gore... You'll have to remind me and I'll try to stay up late to catch your show (I'm a bad Forum Stalker - I have YET to hear your show :p)... If I miss it - Post your results... We could make a thread out of this (I'm sure THAT'S never been done this time of year - ha)

Yes, yes you should see Scrooged. Oh, sweet Bill Murray in his goofy slapstick prime... Classic.
And as for the remake of Black Christmas, honestly I was impressed.
NOTE: I always have to say this; you might want to take my take with a grain of salt because I LOVE slasher films (as in, when my boyfriend says, "THIS HORROR FILM IS AMAZING," I have to take it with a grain of salt because he loves big gory monster movies... a bit more than I do)... I thought that the remake of Black Christmas was a GREAT slasher film... Definitely an archetypal slasher theme: Hot ladies being hunted down (setting is a sorority house with all of the sisters who stayed at school for the holidays)... The death scenes are delightfully brutal (not HUGELY gory, but enough to make me cringe).
That being said... The killer/twist "reveal" was a little LAME, to tell you the truth, and the end was so incredibly long, drawn-out, and elaborate that it negated what I thought was a REALLY well-made film.
I'd say, DEFINITELY check it out if you like slasher films... I'm pretty sure that Horror Fans panned it when it came out, but the first 3/4s of the film are definitely worth it, IMO.
...
Just turn it off before the end. ;)
I'd actually be interested in what other people think of the Black Christmas remake... The parts I liked, I REALLY liked... And so did my boyfriend... But I'm curious to see if people thought it was just cheesey.
I like the Crimbo concept, by the way MM... That's pretty spectacular... You need to post a pic of the woolly intimates... Are they available on mail order? ;)

LOVE Scrooged, definitely a must see at Christmas. :)
As far as the Black Christmas remake goes, its my absolute most hated remake ever. If you loved the original as much as I did, I would give it a great big pass. Completely absurb, and I believe, like many remakes these days, stomped all over everything that made the original great. Had one good death scene going for it, but that certainly didn't make up for the rest of that mess.
Yeah, I'm not a fan.....;)
Anyway, I'm sure we are going to be starting new traditions this year. our first Christmas together as a married couple. I know I plan to finally watch Silent Night, Deadly Night if I get a chance. Its been recommended to me for years, and this is the year, I think....:p I also HAVE to watch Scrooge (the Alastair Sim version that ChronoGrl , which is my favorite version of the tale ever) or A Christmas Carol (the version with Reginald Owen).
Best Scrooge EVER is.............

I don't really have a Christmas thing...
Myself and the girl will more often than not spend it with her family, as mine lives pretty far away...just hang out with our people, make neccessary phonecalls to those we haven't caught up with, and friends who are themselves occupoed with family stuff...etc.
It's mainly a big cooking day...get up early, grab something for breakfast (we usually hit up a bakery for fresh croissants, then get back home and start at it.
Cooking, talking, drinking, music on.
Don't really do any movies, mainly just music and chatting, spending time together without too much AV interruption.
It's like the yearly catch-up, swapping recipes and ideas...etc.
At some point there'll be gifts exchanged I guess, but that's pretty much it.
Togetherness, and all that.

The original is a creepy film, in my opinion. And because of what you DIDN'T know. Very effective. I'm not big on a whole lot of backstory, I prefer mystery and subtlety, unless it is done very well, and I thought it was poorly done in the remake. But in general, I am not a huge fan of remakes, some I like or love......The Fly, The Thing, Dawn of the Dead, even The Hills Have Eyes. But mostly, like this one, I have no use for them. But I am slasher fan as well. I just seem to be stuck in the '70s and '80s.....;)
Its one of my favorites as well! :D And its funny, but it is also one of my dad's favorites. We watched it every year. And those are the two versions he loves and owns. So apparently I was influenced there. ;)
Thank you! Should be fun.....really, I used to dread Christmas.....not so much this year, actually looking forward to it.

I Like To Spend This Time Of Year
Visiting My Old Friend Ebenezer
I Put The Fear Of God Into Him
That Cheap Tight-ass Old Geezer
And Then I Have A Christmas Toast
With Some Lovely Cherry Wine
Or Eggnog With A Bit Of Rum
It Makes Me Feel So Fine
Then Me And The Ghost Of Christmas Present
Will Get Tipsy And Stir The Shit
Its Off We Go On A Mischief Run
To The House Of Poor Bob Cratchit
We'll Steal The Prize Goose
And The Pudding In The Copper
And Break Tiny Tim's Crutch
Even Though Its Not Proper
Then We'll Meet With The Ghost
Of Christmas Yet To Come
He's A Scary Motherfucker
So We'll Give Him All The Rum
Every Year Its The Same
It Doesn't Deviate In The Least
I Made These Chains That Bind Me
Link By Link I Built This Beast
Don't Feel Bad For Me Children
I Seek No Pity For My Pain
The Question You Should Ponder Is
How Long Is Your Chain

I love the Alastair Sim 1951 "A Christmas Carol," that is a seriously good movie.
"A chance and hope of my procuring, Ebenezer." I always wondered about that. Exactly what did Marley have to do to secure this opportunity for Scrooge to redeem himself? Surely that sort of special counseling services don't happen cheaply, or often. Did Marley have to add extra weights to his chain, or did he have to pay some other sort of penance? Did he have to walk on sharp rocks without shoes?

As the former bartender, I'd say Capt. Morgan's if you like it spicy or any good dark rum, like Appleton Estate or Meyers. Clear alcohol is for fruit juice and should be avoided.
I prefer a nice cognac like Gaston de Casteljac in my eggnog.

I always wondered that a bit myself... The whole premise of the story is that it's completely Scrooge-centric and concerned completely about his redemption, yet the first vision of afterlife and eternal damnation that we get is actually Marley. It always concerned me that Scrooge was able to be redeemed (though we were able to SEE what a miserly person he was), while the outcome of Marley's fate was undetermined (off-scene), while he, to us, as an audience, is really given significantly more pathos (I mean, we see him in CHAINS relenting, while Scrooge, initially is REVELING in his cruelty and greed).
I try to console myself by saying that Marley, in warning and guiding Scrooge, is somehow expunging his damed fate.
So, I just wanna say...traditions and stuff aside...whoever reads this, members past and present, forum browsers, and those that found this by accident...whether it's a person in here that I've chatted with, read the posts of (or likewise), or even upset/had bullshit with in the past:

Yeah, you see what I mean? All those poor bastards in the street, those transparent guys who have "lost their power, forever," they had no chance of redemption. Marley specifically states that Scrooge's chance is "of my procuring," meaning, this is an unusual situation. It's implied that Marley had to do something--pull some strings--to make this happen. Marley is a man of business, of course. Did he cut a deal with someone? The head honcho, maybe?
Is Marley's penance that he must, perhaps, roam the world for a while, helping other misguided souls become better people while they are still alive?
Perhaps the creepiest implication is that the living are the only ones who are capable of determining the quality of their afterlife--that once you check out, you are forever sleeping in the bed you made.

Yeah, I'm glad that I'm not the only one troubled by this turn of plot... Why is it that Scrooge gets a chance for redemption, but no one else does? Does that mean that no one cares as much about the living filling out their damned destiny than Marley does for Scrooge?
Well, the implication that the living can determine the quality of their afterlife is fairly Christian, but it seems that the Dead can influence the living to influence their Life? And are the already Damned just screwed?
I have always wondered what Marley did to finagle his way there, too... and why that doesn't happen more often. What makes Scrooge's life more important than those already damned? Because he's rich and have more influence to help people? I wonder...
I still have incredibly pathos for Marley. No WONDER he's so cranky. :p

I think it comes down to the idea that Marley has a personal interest. He feels for Scrooge because he and Scrooge are kindred spirits, and former friends...or associates. And being so close to Scrooge, in that sense, he knows exactly what Scrooge's problem is and how it might be fixed.
He surely wishes to see Scrooge redeemed, in part, because he dreams of himself redeemed but that's not possible any more. It will warm Marley's heart to see it happen.
So I believe Marley undertook this as a personal project, and made a deal, offered whatever was necessary to secure this chance for Scrooge.
As frightening as Marley's apparition is, he's really, I think, a nice guy to go to all this trouble for his friend.

If The Truth Be Told
Scrooge And I Were Lovers
He Wasn't So Stingy
Beneath The Covers
In Life I Wore Chains
When Tied To The Bed
A Bit On The Kinky Side
My Garmets He'd Shread
He Would Smear Figgy Pudding
All Over My Body
Dessert Was Delightful
And Never Too Shoddy
Then We Would Cuddle By The Fire
And Share Some Apple Wine
Yes My Life With Ebenezer
Was Most Very Divine
Now In Death I Visit
Every Christmas Eve
To Make Him Change His Ways
The Spirit Of Christmas He'll Believe

So, I just wanna say...traditions and stuff aside...whoever reads this, members past and present, forum browsers, and those that found this by accident...whether it's a person in here that I've chatted with, read the posts of (or likewise), or even upset/had bullshit with in the past:
Christmas...
I hope wherever you are, whatever you're doing, on your own, alone, or with family or friends, that you have a good peaceful day and that everything in your life goes just as planned, even if only for this day, however significant it is for you personally - I throw out the same wish for all of you.
Take care y'selves.

That was nice. :) Happy Holidays to you, and to everyone else here at HDC. I truly hope everyone is happy, healthy, safe and loved. This year, and for many, many years to follow. A tall order I know, but hey, I'm an optimist....;)

So I finally saw it.
And, wow. WOW. A movie that predates Halloween by 4 years, you can see how Carpenter's iconic masterpiece borrows from this incredibly well done slasher.
I'm going to go rant about it in "Last Seen Movie" thread. But I thought that I should single out YOU, Jenna before doing so. :p

This year all my traditions are out the window. No gifts, no big get togethers...just counting my blessings and looking forward to the life that's ahead now. Next years Christmas starts all new traditions with new family members that I am very grateful for.
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas with everyone who is important to you. Remember....it's not what you get, but what you already have that's special.

At christmas time we always have a bottle of lime cordial in the house, a cooked breakfast, then we open our presents. And usually we have a party on boxing day.
EDIT: Just been told most americans don't celebrate boxing day. It's the day after christmas.

I just realised I am undertaking an old tradition of mine.. That is watching the Boxing day test match (cricket)...
Only this time I am watching it Christmas night instead of Boxing day... yeah, it's weird....
