Hi Everyone,
My wife asked me when I started watching horror flicks.
It took me awhile to think about it.
I remember being terrified of "Freddie" as a kid.
I couldn't watch it.
It took me a few days to actually remember when I first started watching them.
How about you?
When did you start watching?

Watching the first Poltergeist movie in the basement by myself. Needless to say, my fear of clowns played a part in how scared I was, but it was still awesome!

i don't really remember when i actually "fell in love" with horror. i just remember always loving it. according to my mom though, Halloween was the first horror movie i ever saw. so i guess it was then.

I don't remember exactly when either, I remember loving the old monster movies when I was a kid. My mom told me that I once said that "I liked the way my stomach felt" while watching horror movies, and I don't recall that at all. So, its been just about my whole life apparently.....;)

As long as I can remember...the early 70's...when I was a wee tyke my folks had this children's encyclopedia thing. And in the M volume was this article on "masks" and there were some pictures of ugly monster masks...I mean wicked, BUTT-UGLY cool masks. I always used to go to that section and look at the pictures. After that, all that shit was cool. Rubber monster wiggly toys in the store, monster movies on TV, all that monster stuff was "my thing," sort of.

I used to watch all the old black and white monster movies as a kid. And, I may have mentioned this before, but there were 2 movies that were played every year when I was a kid. "The Wizard of Oz" and Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds", and it was a family event when they were on for me, mom, dad, bro and sis to watch them. We watched them every year. (Yah I know, the wizard isn't horror, but The Birds is.)
In school when we had to write short stories, I would often write about haunted houses and stuff like that. I guess it's in my genes.

I had recently seen halloweentown and so, when I saw that halloween was on, thought they must be related. Never been the same since.

When I was small, The Wizard of Oz scared the crap out of me. There's a lot of really freaky stuff in that movie...take your pick, there is something creepy in every scene, almost. Scarecrow having his guts pulled out, melting witch, nightmare tornado, flying monkeys, floating Wizard head...

Hmmmm, never thought of it that way. But you make a very good point. Maybe that's why I always loved that movie too!

As for me... My senior year in high school I REALLY started to take an interest in movies, FILM as an art form... I started analyzing and close-reading films. I took interest in specific directors, actors, etc.
I realize, however, while I was building my vast tome of movie knowledge, there were a few genres that I was missing. HORROR was one of the.
SO, my Horror exploration began with, "Well, if I'm going to call myself a movie buff, I should be exposed to ALL film genres," so I started a QUEST to find good scary movies. THEN:
Freshman year in college: Took a "Philosophy of Film" class and read "Philosophy of Horror" and started to really meditate on WHY people like being scared.
Sophomore year in college: Watched Halloween and it scared me so much I had to leave the theater to pee so as not to piss myself.
After College: Started watching more and more horror.
Honestly, I am FASCINATED by films that make me FEEL - Make me laugh, cry, ruminate... I am also fascinated by films that make me scared. I have a lot of respect for directors who do it well.
And I can ramble a lot more on the topic of getting into and enjoying, but I'll spare you guys for now. :p
Oh, and it helps that my current boyfriend LOVES horror movies (my last one didn't and scoffed at my movie tastes - FUCKHEAD)... So that helps.

I got into Sci Fi in the 50's with Them, War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide and The Day The Earth Stood Still. I saw these at the movies either with my parents or my buddies.
When I first saw The Bride of Frankenstein on TV and when the face came out with that mechanical movement it scared the living hell out of me. I had to go change my bloomers!

Morgus the Magnificent is known to a lot of horror host fans. He had his own locally-produced movie, too, The Wacky World of Dr. Morgus or something like that. Very rare film.

That reminds me... First horror movies that my parents showed me:
Carnival of Souls. SERIOUSLY scared the HELL out of me.
Psycho. Scared me. But not as much as Carnival.
I also remember them showing me Killer Klowns from Outer Space... That scared me too.

i've pretty much loved horror my entire life. i've always loved halloween and reading ghost stories, so as i got a bit older it just naturally bled over into my film interests too.
specifically, my uncle used to let me borrow tapes of old 50s monster movies and other assorted ones. i remember always wanting to watch bride of frankenstein and i was a teenage werewolf.

As far I remember it was 1987 and we were visiting at our grand ma's house that was in a rural countryside and the movie was THE EVIL DEAD! I started to watch the movie with my cousins in a dark TV room and I still remember we were so frightened that we stick together rest of the day to share and avoid that nightmarish experience.

The first horror film I saw was Octaman, on TV.
I couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 years old at the time, but I loved it. I saw The Blob as well when quite young (a far superior film to Octaman!), and I was hooked.
Tried to see as many horror films as I could manage on TV (no VHS then :) ), and really developed a liking for films from Hammer and Amicus (which seemed to be most of what was played in the late 70's in Australia).
Started reading classic horror literature (eg Dracula, Frankenstein) when I was about 6 or 7, and since then horror has been a favourite above all other genres.

For some reason I developed a specialized skill at waking up early and finding old sci-fi movies on the TV. There were at least half a dozen times I would run upstairs and wake up my parents because some black and white film had scared me. I specifically remember The Blob and War of the Worlds causing me to hide behind the couch in the den because I was so scared.
After that I realized that those stories just seemed to have something ~more~ to them than, say, most of the stuff being dished out in the 80's. I watched Friday the 13th and was scared to be by myself for 6 months. Hellraiser did the same thing to me. And after spending 6 months scared that Jason was going to pop out of a closet and kill me with a machete, I started to realize I actually kind of liked the sensation of being scared. So it's been a slow-developing thing over time.
Right after I realized that I saw Aliens and the original Halloween and fell in love with them. They've always been in my top faves ever since.

Heh heh heh. Octaman has that great scene where the monster smashes into the tent and starts beating those two poor guys and stomping them...and before he leaves, he kicks a chair over with his tentacle-leg. Sonsabitches.......don't F with Octaman, mo fo!

I don't remember exactly how old I was. I know I was at least in grade school. There used to be a show on Saturday afternoons called "Dr. Shock" and he would show all these old horror movies. Plus, back then, movies didn't have ratings so I would be able to go to the Saturday afternoon matinee (for 25 cents) and watch a bunch of horror movies. The theatre was the first place I saw "Mark of the Devil".

For me, it had to be my craving for Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark when I was younger. I remember saying that I'd never watch horror movies. Little did I know that Goosebumps and AYAOTD was my segue into horror. God, I miss those shows (well, I guess I can't miss Gooesbumps anymore since it's on Cartoon Network again).

As much as I loved Goosebumps, AYAOTD takes the cake. So many of those episodes freaked me out when I was young. You can catch a lot of episodes of both Goosebumps and AYAOTD on YouTube.

IT was a really bad one for me. I've probably told this story but I will regail you all with it again. My cousin and I watched IT one night when I slept over, despite how her Dad told us not to. We hardly slept cause we were scared and the next day when we were driving to church, her dad had tied blue balloons all along fences on the way there.

I dunno...it was pretty progressive. As a kid you don't think about it, but I guess it was sometime in the late to mid teens that I realised the majority of the films I liked, and had been to see, were more towards the horror side of things in ratio.
I didn't have some sudden moment of realization.

Earliest memory was watching 'the burning', when it first came out on ThornEMI video with that great cover of Cropsy on fire. I remember looking at the cover thinking it would be no big deal. The the scene in the canoo came along and I think I did a little poo. I must have been about 6 at the time, maybe younger so I can be forgiven. Now I a man, when I watch it I do a fucking big shit instead. Happy days...
