Cloverfield - Newest project from JJ Abrams (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0009190/), producer of Lost and Alias.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/Chronogrl/55m-4.jpg

It's a giant monster movie! Early rumors coined it "The American version of The Host."

Initial Teaser can be found here on YouTube. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IvNkGm8mxiM) I first saw it when watching Transformers in the theater.

New Theatrical Trailer. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=VBb0JHJRK8k)

If you Google, you find all kinds of related Blogs and fanboy/girl speculation.

Honestly, I'm psyched. I would love to see a successful Monster Movie (honestly, I was a huge fan of The Host, so as long as this isn't pure mimesis, hopefully it will be good). Not to mention, I am also a big fan of Alias and Lost (though mostly the earlier episodes of those series). Not to mention, the parasitic marketing is intriguing and fairly well done.

The fact that they are keeping the monster so secretive makes me want to see it all the more.

Yeah, I REALLY like the medium of the handheld camera... I think that it works really well for the low-key low budget films like Blair Witch and I'm interested to see it used to capture a Monster Movie.

That first teaser that I saw in front of the Transformers movie was absolutely brilliant...

What I hope the intention of the handheld cam is to capture a lot of the panic (having the first person perspective of a panicked victim)... Monster movies are just as much about the human panic/element to it as it is the monster itself... I am VERY excited about the monster camcorder. :)

I can't wait to see the Monster, too.

Definitely browse through the Blogs... The hype and speculation is definitely part of the film (incidentally, ALSO like Blair Witch).

There's 2 different drawings circulating the net that claim to be monster. Haven't looked at them myself, though.

My boyfriend has been tracking this thing religiously over the net ever since we saw the trailer. He's got every website even remotely associated with it bookmarked and he checks them almost daily from what I can tell.

Me, I'm steering clear simply because I like to judge a movie based on the initial impression I get of it and not the hype around it. But if it is like The Host (which we own, and love) I'm going to be all over this like white on rice.
I was afraid it was going to be a completely different angle on Godzilla, ignoring the original one with Matthew Broderick in, it set in an alternate universe where such things didn't happen. I'm told that's reeeally unlikely now, so that's something of a comfort.

At this rate, though, I think I'm going to ask the bf to take me on a tour through what he's uncovered just so I can get in on why he's so excited to see "Slusho" on Heroes.

I can't wait to see this. I'm glad they finally gave it a title, though, without a title, it was so secretive. And that got me excited. Nonetheless, we have no glimpse of the monster, and I hope it stays that way until you see the movie.

I wrote (attempted) a review for the movie a few hours ago, but I'm not that good at reviewing things, so I hope this helps somebody in some way.

I'm still a bit torn about the movie, I just got back from seeing it. The character development was good, the situations (other than that giant fucker destroying everything) seemed realistic. The destruction wasn't much I hadn't seen before in other destruction/monster movies. The camera work, the first-person thing was cool at some points in hiding the monster's entire body for the beginning of the movie, but during a scene featuring the characters running through a tunnel, I almost threw up. And now, the monster. I thought it was cool how they use the viral marketing to let people try to figure out their own version of the monster's origin by not explaining it. The way it looked was kind of cool, though in some shadow scenes that take place in shadows it looks like Dr. Zoidberg from "Futurama". The smaller monsters falling off of it were pretty cool too. It doesn't seem to different from other monsters, but the focus really isn't supposed to be on the monster but the people being attacked by the monster so I guess that's ok. All in all, it was a decent movie that I'll watch another time or two but I didn't feel it was as much as it was built up to be with all of the viral marketing and whatnot (several of the viral websites aren't even referenced in the movie in any way).

6.5/10

just saw it. it completley sucked. haha, sorry. the camera movement made you dizzy. I think it would have been much better if the camera wasnt so god danm bad. I mean, i appreciated the concept, it was different. But I felt like i was going to throw up through some parts.

When the movie ended all you could hear is people saying it sucked. haha, sorry i really wish it was much bettttter

OMFG I AM TIRED OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SHAKEY FUCKING CAM!

Let me see you filming a party then all of a sudden something attack your city and during it you wanted to try and film stuff for people to see later but yet thousands of people are pushing you because they are running for their lives and your running and shit is blowing up near you.

Let me see you not have a shakey cam.

Actually, I think most video cameras these days come with some kind of anti-shake feature.

I'm gonna see it in an hour, and if the theatre is filled with noisy jackasses and ringing phones, there's gonna be a REAL monster loose in the dark.

I wasn't putting that toward you. I just hate when people say that it was stupid the way they did it. In my honest opinion it helped with the chaos that was occurring.

They do come with this feature but you need to turn it on in order for it to work and since it wasn't even the dude's camera nor did he even know how to turn the light or nightvision on I am sure he didn't know how to implement the SteadiCam feature.

Something I think would be better:

SPOILER
I wish that the last person alive would have been Hud. This movie seemed realistic up until the point where the last ones living were the guy who had a party and was the center of attention and the girl he liked. Lily's boyfriend died right when everything started and the girl Hud liked died about halfway through. Plus I think it would have been cool to see Hud's "If you find this" speech, seeing as he is the person behind the camera you see less than the monster. I thought it would have been cool if he was the last one is all I'm saying.

Kemal
01-19-2008, 10:50 AM
I'll agree with that above...

Now havnig seen it I think it was very decent. I was afraid it would not live up to the hype, but I think it delivered. It was a little slow in the beginning, and they overdid the shaky camera a little. But overall I thought it was good. Go in expecting a monster trashing the city, and a desperate battle to stay alive from the point of view of an average guy, and you won't be disappointed.

It's not easy to do a serious monster movie. I think this is almost as good as you can expect in that genre. I give it 4 slushos out of 5.

SPOILER

I didn't ilke how indestructible the creature seemed... direct fire from a 155mm howitzer, and a B2 drops its whole payload to no effect. Typical 500 pound bombs will turn steel and concrete into hot slush, much less living tissue. Oh well, suspension of disbelief and all that.

Who the fuck would grab a TRIPOD, when there is a giant fucking monster destroying the city, just so they could stop, set it up, take a shot, pick it up, and run away again?!?!?!?!?!?!

I think a camera mounted on a giant pogo-stick would be better.
Four people bouncing up and down in unison while the DP is screaming "A bit more to the left ... mind that tree !"

Or a trained Dalek with a head-cam.

I might go see this on Tuesday (cheap movie night) but I seriously fear I will end up throwing up. I was sick during Blaire Witch, the last 2 matrix movies with smarming sentinels, Saw 4 (but that might have been the flu and not motion sickness) and I can't go on much longer than a half hour car ride. Am I doomed to not see this movie? because my motion sickness has always been really bad. Should I just take a gravol or will I then fall asleep? Help!

I'd say take some motion sickness meds before hand or some tylenol with you and sick as far back from the screen as you can.

I think if you sit far enough back it won't be a problem.

Got to see it in the theater, though, a small screen won't do it justice.

My expectations were way too high for this movie, so I was disappointed. The "blair witch" camera style was irritating, too.

But, who gives a shit? I semi-liked it, it was cool... and if I hadn't started creaming my pants pack in July, I might've loved this movie from not being over-hyped. Oh well.

Great freakin movie, The POV didn't bother me. THe monster was great, and there was one point when I jumped and go a shiver down my spine, when they turned the nightvision on and he was looking over the other guys shoulder. I loved the fact that they didn't answer any questions at all, like where these came from, and what happens when people are bitten(this one i wanted to know soooo bad that it bothered me). The ending was a little cheesy. But the monster looked great, if unrealistic, but who cares? its a movie. 8/10

I loved it. Great movie, great monster. I only wish that the American "Godzilla" film had been this good. Lots of suspense and action, and I actually cared a bit for the characters even though I knew very little about them. I liked them.
Over all it was a class act in the giant monster genre.

I went and saw this movie about five days ago, without really knowing what it was and only having seen the trailer once. One of my girlfriends wanted someone to go to the movie's with and since I wasn't doing anything I thought what the hell.

All I have to say its DAMN. I actually really liked this movie! If you had of asked me after I'd seen it I wouldnt have been able to give an answer either way but now that I've had a few days to contemplate and think on it, I've decided i really liked it. I loved the handheld camera as it gave the movie a very relastic element to it and made it much scarier for me. More dramatic and adrenaline run.

I must be immune to motion sickness as the shakey cam never once made me sick and I actually kind of got use to it after awhile and totally forgot I was watching something that wasn't steady cam or dolly opporated. I can see where people are coming from though when they say they didn't like it. Most of them don't even stay to watch the whole movie.

A couple actually walked out ten minutes into the movie when I went and saw it. It did start off slow, but that's only because it was introducing the main characters and their relationships to one another. If you working with a home movie then it's going to be slow as home movies are only entertaining if you yourself are in them. If that couple had of stayed just another two minutes they would have seen the action to come.

I have to admit when i left the cinema I did leave with a feeling of emptyness. It was strange movie and it was scary, but I still really liked it.
