Ok - so I just read the book Blindness by Jose Saramago - who is a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Now, in fairness it is not exactly horror but much of it reads like a wry literary take on a "Dawn of the Dead" scenario. Very smart and well written. What keeps it from being purely horror is the clever voice of the narrator who is able to provide a nice commentary on events.

So, just to whet your appetite - a sudden plague of blindness strikes a small unnamed country. Soon the government is quarantining those affected with the blindness but as the plague spread those isolated in the detention center begin to face shortages, hardships, lack of food and their own violent and depraved natures - - - and then things get worse!

Blindness is a thrilling tale of the end of the world but also a moving allegory about our own human nature - the noble and the petty - and the ways we all suffer from some level of blindness.

highly recommended!
