Hello everyone and welcome to the first ever HDC Horror Oscar Awards ceremony.

I am your host and presenter for this rather prestigious event. As you all know, our own well-respected member, Tic, had this idea for a community project about a month back. Plenty of us became a part of it and sent in our choices in each individual category, and then the selected judges presided over the choice of winners for each HDC Horror Oscar.

Before we start, I would like to thank Tic for this novel idea, and each of the judges who took (a long) time out of their busy schedules to contemplate and debate in each category, and finally, to all the members who went through the categories and sent in their nominations.

We will start in reverse order of the Awards, so that the best and biggest Awards are reserved for the end.

First up, is The Horror Film Which Has/Had Made The Most Impact On The Audience. The nominees are :-

Dracula (1931)
Night of the living Dead (1968)
The Exorcist (1973)
Jaws (1975)
Halloween (1978)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)

And, the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

THE EXORCIST

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51KP0KGVMDL._SS500_.jpg

This movie, adapted from the 1971 novel of the same name, was nominated for 10 Academy Awards of which it won 2, and grossed over $400,000,000 worldwide.

Loosely based on the documented exorcism of a 12 year old boy in 1949, and showing a condensed version of the actual Rite of Exorcism.

A very controversial movie, it’s impact on audiences had them fainting, screaming and becoming genuinely terrified during the original showing of this movie, and still has the same impact today, almost 30 years after it’s release.

For The Person Who Has Attempted To Single-Handedly Destroy Horror, the voters were unanimous in their choice. It was only ONE person nominated...and of course he went on to win.

The unanimous choice, of the voters and the judges, folks...The HDC Horror Razzie goes to...

UWE BOLL

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e313/Quest206/UBL.jpg

All the categories that he was nominated for he came almost, infact unanimously top of the pile. To other film makers, please take heed or you may be the second candidate.

The Person who had single handedly attempted to destroy the horror of which we so love.

The next HDC Horror Oscar to be awarded is The Person/Character Who Has Brought Horror To The Masses.

The nominees are...

Boris Karloff
George A Romero
John Carpenter
Peter Cushing
Vincent Price

And...the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

JOHN CARPENTER

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/tallulahbankhead/directors/johncarpenter.jpg

Here’s what Wiki has to say about the man who brought not only horror, but other genre’s to the forefront of the cinematic world, and who also manages to combine genre’s, very successfully, to give us some of the best movies around

“John Howard Carpenter is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, film score composer and occasional actor. Carpenter has worked in numerous film genres, and is considered one of the most accomplished and influential horror and science fiction directors in Hollywood”.

“With a career that has spanned over thirty years, John Carpenter has attained a reputation as a respected independent filmmaker. Many horror/sci-fi/indie filmmakers have expressed admiration for Carpenter's work, including Robert Rodriguez, Paul W.S. Anderson, Guillermo Del Toro, Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino”

And the judges are in agreement

“…whether he's directing or producing, he's put a lot of horror out there for a lot of people…”

“…The majority of his films whether horror or not, have become talking points. A genuine lover of horror himself and it shows...”

“…His films whether by luck or good decisions have been blessed with good stories and the crew to accompany them…”

“…His movies, ranging from Halloween to Escape from New York, he showed the finer talents of a genius, and the simplicity of a prodigy. All his movies struck deep chords with the audiences everywhere...which explains why everyone loved John Carpenter so much that even a bad movie carrying the tag "John Carpenter Presents" was bound to have people watching it.

The man is a living example in himself…”

For the year 2007, The Worst Horror Film Of The Year HDC Horror Razzie had some forgettable nominees. They are...

Blood & Chocolate
Captivity
Halloween
Hostel 2
Metamorphosis
Primeval
Seed
The Hills have Eyes 2

And, the HDC Horror Razzie goes to...

THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61Uf%2BKneujL._SS500_.jpg

A film with a ‘non-existent plot, bad acting’, and ‘forgettable direction’.

In the words of one judge “…just trying to make a quick buck. Disgraceful…”

The Best Horror Film of the Year 2007 HDC Horror Oscar was pretty much a keenly contested category between two excellent movies.

The nominees are...

28 Weeks later
Fido
Grindhouse
Pan's Labyrinth

And, after much deliberation, the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

GRINDHOUSE

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51U%2BOUbO8cL._SS500_.jpg

The film was my absolute favorite of the year. It had everything you wanted in a horror movie. Cheesy one liners, gore, guts, blood, nudity, action, craziness, and all out fun. In my opinion no film this year has come close to this in the horror genre.

Bringing back the grind house experience that was so well known in the late 60s and early 70s with all sorts of politically incorrect themes such as Black exploitation, Sex exploitation, Shock exploitation, Cannibal films, Zombie films, Slasher films, and much more.

Interlaced with trailers for other movies in between them, Grind House was such a movie experience. Not a lot of people cared for Quentin Tarantino’s film Death Proof due to it’s dialogue but if they would have reversed the order of which they showed the films I am sure the critics and crowd would have liked it more.

Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror was shown first and was an in your face, fast paced, sci-fi, horror, action flick with lots of laughs, gore, and fun. In between we got to see fake trailers directed by greats like Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright, Eli Roth, and Robert Rodriguez himself.

After the trailers Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof played and it was just as great. Some of the best car chase sequences and action. And not to forget the death scene that just won an award for Most Memorable Mutilation at the Scream 2007 Awards. This movie is definitely the best horror flick of 2007!

The much prestigious Fact-Based Horror HDC Oscar Award's nominees are...

The Haunting
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Exorcist
Helter-Skelter
Sicko

And...the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51276E72APL._SS500_.jpg

This film, was inspired by serial killer Ed Gein. Gein did wear human skin, but he acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. The interior of the house, particularly the macabre living room filled with bones, was also based on the crime scene notes describing the inside of Gein's home.

The horror movies made specially for kids hold a much loved place deep in the hearts of children and adults alike.

The Kids Horror HDC Horror Oscar Award's nominees are...

The Birds
Ernest Scared Stupid
Monster Squad
The Witches
Watcher in the woods
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Goosebumps
Jumanji
Nightmare before Christmas

And...the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5133H3SN3EL._SS500_.jpg

Wow. An evil game, a sexy slayer, an opening sequence with a briefcase which is scary enough, the best in my opinion Roald Dahl adaptation ever or playdo.

Wow.

This may just be the hardest descision ever! There was some anger involved in choosing these and it was close, but in the end one stood victorious. A film which made Claymation kinda scary and put Father Christmas in pain.

The HDC Horror Oscar Award for TV Horror has some really good nominees, which are...

Hammer House of Horror
Tales from the Crypt
Twighlight Zone
Salem's Lot
Dexter

This was indeed a tough choice. And...in the end...the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

TALES FROM THE CRYPT

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71ATZH6TEZL._SS500_.gif

Originally run from 1989 to 1996 on HBO, Tales From The Crypt won many Motion Picture Awards and Emmy Awards, and was the one of the few anthology series to be allowed to have full freedom from censorship by the FCC, due to the fact that it was on HBO.

The 7 Seasons of this extremely popular horror anthology series is out on DVD Collection Packs.

Hannibal
28 Weeks Later
Bug

And...the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

AMERICAN PSYCHO

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Z3HPSQ0FL._SS500_.jpg

Now we are upto date on our journey of the past, the thrills and chills that the silver screen has allowed us to peek, often with one eye open, scared but still not wanting to miss anything, cringing with the blood, only to give a sigh of relief at the finish, even laughing not only at the killers victims, but with the killers themselves.

Here we have our hero and a warning from the modern age of competition, be best at everything, including the kill, everything is me first, or Im better than you, simply because I wear better clothes, have a better job...

The nominees listed for The Best in Horror Through The Decades - 1990s are...

Army of Darkness - Evil Dead 3
Dead Alive aka Brain Dead
Jacob's Ladder
Silence of the Lambs
Se7en
Blade
Audition

And...the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

SE7EN

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41bwZSk5fYL._SS500_.jpg

The audiences opinion changed, this time from straight forward frights and fun to perhaps something a little bit more darker and psychological, the 90’s gave this in abundance – to cannibal psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter to the “everyman” John Doe, bleak grunge horror was here...to stay...and horrify.

The nominees listed for The Best in Horror Through The Decades - 1980s are...

The Shining
Evil Dead
Friday the 13th
The Thing
Nightmare on Elm Street
Evil Dead 2
Day of the Dead

Talk about TOUGH choices!

The HDC Horror Oscar (after much debating and deliberation) goes to...

EVIL DEAD 2

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JQ56063AL._SS500_.jpg

Maybe the audience were getting jaded by the constant slasher movies and wanted more, not just to be scared, but amused, this came into fruition with the appearance of the 2 Evil Deads. Where Part 1 was scary as hell, part 2 combined slapstick black humor and cheesy atmosphere with ultra-gore frights. For the first time, audiences worldwide were treated to a brilliant concoction of humor and horror.

The nominees listed for The Best in Horror Through The Decades - 1970s are...

Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween
The Exorcist
Dawn of the Dead
Alien

Another equally TOUGH choice as the former one. This one took a LOT of deliberation and debate too...and in the end, the HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

HALLOWEEN

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41CJBZZSQFL._SS500_.jpg

There was massive thrills and chills, and again though this was 30 years ago, each one is still lauded over with each having their own magic to the screen.

Each is worthy of the award, but there is one, that especially this time of year, October is fondly remembered; Heralding a new icon of terror...Michael Myers.

The nominees listed for The Best in Horror Through The Decades - 1960s are...

Eyes without a Face
Psycho
Rosemary's Baby
Night of the living Dead

It was a difficult category to judge...yet, the judges were ALMOST unanimous in their choice. The HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51MSB7S1MCL._SS500_.jpg

A true horror classic. Infact it was so important that it may have changed the way the film industry was heading for. A milestone in epic film-making.

_____V_____
10-29-2007, 02:13 AM
The nominees listed for The Best in Horror Through The Decades - 1950s are...

Curse of Frankenstein
Dracula (Hammer)
House on Haunted Hill
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Night of the Hunter
The Blob
The Thing From Another World

It was yet another difficult category to judge...but eventually for sheer impact through the 50s, The HDC Horror Oscar goes to...

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5184JYCKAEL._SS500_.jpg

Need I say again classics in their own right – but simply for the feeling of not being in control, becoming paranoid at your neighbour...and at the ones you love and trust the most. This film does stand out.

_____V_____
10-29-2007, 02:19 AM
The nominees listed for The Best in Horror Through The Decades - 1940s are...

The Body Snatcher
The Wolf Man

And...the HDC Honorary Horror Oscar goes to...

THE WOLF MAN

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51360BH1JKL._SS500_.jpg

Again more classics, each a perfect example of its kind. However because of perhaps its story, make-up effects and that uncontrollable image of pure animal instinct, there was one that does stand out from the rest: The Wolf Man.

_____V_____
10-29-2007, 02:23 AM
The nominees listed for The Best in Horror Through The Decades - 1930s are...

Dracula
Frankenstein
Freaks
The Raven

All four movies are living examples in horror in their own right...yet one does stand out from the rest. The HDC Honorary Horror Oscar goes to...

FREAKS

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YT5XFCE4L._SS500_.jpg

As you can see, plenty to talk about, from the presence of Dracula, the now iconic Frankenstein make-up, to the often controversial images of Freaks, but not let us forget The Raven.
Each has something to offer but one, perhaps due to the subject and the director, did stand out. Its a unique film in its own right.

FRANKENSTEIN

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41SKAKFRK0L._SS500_.jpg

A cautionary tale about men playing God, this book stands out as one of the best in the horror genre, it has stood the test of time and continues to be popular today, both in book and movie format.

The emotions engendered by this book are relevant whatever the era, life changes, emotions don’t, “…The feeling of pity when the creature feels unwanted and an outcast, it not only regards the doctor as not only his creator, but his father…” is something that still holds true today.

The poster is usually the first thing that the film goer will see. It advertises the film after all. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, but it’s the poster that tells us what were going to get.

This has won simply because it did just that – advertise to us not only the menace, but the size of the shark in question.

The game that wins this is one of my favorite games of all time. It opened my eyes to video games with its creepiness and sheer fun. Having two discs with different openings that come together at parts is an amazing thing for a video game. With one of the best characters in the horror video game genre this game is definitely much deserved for the Best Horror Video Game award.

With Leon Kennedy as one of the best characters in video games in my opinion and the fact that you wonder what is gonna happen next this game just has you caught in it from the beginning. When you first encounter the “licker” and its spit drips from its tongue or when Ada Wong throws you the gun at the end to kill the boss this game is the best of the series and best game.

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51mcsnk6VPL._SS500_.jpg

The groundbreaking effects in this movie are what made it stand the test of time and shocked audiences across the world.

Here’s what Wiki has to say:

‘The various prosthetics and fake, robotic body parts used during the film's painful, extended werewolf transformation scenes and on Griffin Dunne when his character returns as a bloody, mangled ghost impressed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences so much that they decided to create a new awards category at the Oscars specifically for the film – Outstanding Achievements in Makeup.’

The transformation scene was excellently done, the pain endured by the character comes across well and, in the opinion of the judges, has yet to be bettered.

It is still a favourite movie for many even today, and a ‘must have’ in any horror fan’s collection.

A well deserved award.

Again a close run thing and each has its own merits, however from the two. Two main contenders appeared:

Evil Dead and Jaws

Who can forget Ash or the deadites, would a remake encompass them all, from the grapevine Evil dead, may well be re-made.

However, can anyone make Jaws as good as it still is. It is remember one of the biggest money spinners for the producers and allowed Stephen Speilberg go on to other things.

This character, in the original film, was one of the strongest characters in the movie, however the ‘remade’ character in the recent version of the film was a great let-down.

In the 2007 remake of the film this character lacked any real substance and had no personality.

The nominees for The Best Character Ever in a Horror Movie are...

ASH (Evil Dead Series)

The judges summed this character up much better than I can so here are their comments

“…greatest costume, greatest one-liners, greatest attitude, he goes from a total wuss into unstoppable bad-ass in no time flat. just an all around great character...”

“…strong screen-presence, some really great sequences, and some of the best one-liners and one-word dialogues ever seen in a horror movie… Groovy…”

“…He's a much more complex character than the others. Ash is witty, unwilling, and sarcastic until the end but he always ends up trying to save the day... or at least the girl... along with his own ass…”

If I was to say Uwe Boll describes himself as not only a director, a producer but also a writer, would you know who won this one?

A bad screenplay does not make a good movie, Mr Boll. and when you’ve spent a lot of your experience on trying to not only destroy horror, but the games that are based on them. Shame on you.

Dawn of the Dead
Dracula (1931)
Feast
Friday the 13th
Halloween (1978)
Hellraiser
Night of the living Dead

The Incredible Shrinking Man

HALLOWEEN

How’s that for a list?

And how can anyone say whats the best one there, well the judges, overwhelmingly did have a winner – a simple idea, with a simple yet direct story – big bad wolf all over again – this time the wolf became Michael Myers and the three little pigs – his human victims.

John Carpenter again weaved his magic and came up with a now iconic film, originally to be called The Baby-Sitter Murders, then a slice (forgive the pun) of genius, gave its new and unforgotten title.

The disappointing nominees for The Worst Production Studio for Horror are...

Boll Kg
Columbia
Fox Atomic
Paramount
Warner

And...the HDC Horror Razzie for being the worst company to have come in the genre ever is...

BOLL KG

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p216/uwerules/Uweboll1.jpg

This award, on the face of it was a pretty hard one to Judge; Paramount, Columbia and Warner – but yes that man again, this time using his own production company, why because even those already mentioned, have at least made an effort, in trying to produce some good movies. This person who uses his own company, perhaps because no-one else would even consider undertaking the films he creates.

The winner of the worst production studio can only go to Uwe Boll's own production studio, BOLL KG.

HAMMER HORROR

This award goes to one studio, which gave the classic gothic horror an new rush of blood, It brought the classics such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy up-to-date. It was blessed with actors and actresses who would become major stars, such as Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Barbara Shelley, to name but a few. It successfully competed against its rivals and is looked back with many a nostalgic eye.

It since went into dormancy; but there may be good news in the near horizon.

Do I have to give a reason?

The Honourable and Prestigious HDC Horror Oscar for Best Producer goes to...

ROGER CORMAN

His probably unbeatable record for a professional 35mm feature film was two days and a night to shoot the original version of The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), though several other films were made in less than a week.

In the early 1960s, his budgets got bigger (though never big), when he made a series of adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories starring Vincent Price. - among many world-class names who were employed by him at a very early stage in their careers are Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante and many others - which means that his influence on modern American cinema is almost incalculable.(from IMDB)

And that was being kind.

...the list is endless, as was his reputation.

CLINT HOWARD

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u222/rlspear/Entertainment%20Collection/839.jpg

From his first taste in the genre with Evilspeak to his most recent due out in 2008 with The House of Terror. Just because he is so goofy looking and creepy pedophile style makes him a mainstay for horror films.

His acting is just so bad it makes you wish that Ron Howard just never put him in any of his films. Being the main reason he gets any recognition at all. He is the reason why some horror movies are just not what they could have been. Here are some of the flicks he has been in.

Night Shift (1983)
Cocoon (1985)
The Wraith (1986)
Disturbed (1990)
Initiation: Silent Night, Deadly Night 4 (1990)
Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker (1991)
Carnosaur (1993)
Infested (1993)
Leprechaun 2 (1994)
Ice Cream Man (1995)
The Dentist 2 (1998)
House of the Dead (2003)
Big Bad Wolf (2006)
Halloween (2007)

So over the years he has been in fourteen extremely horrible horror films and this is why he IS the worst horror film actor EVER!!

I think you already know this one, or do you?

Let me put you out of your misery : Mr Boll is at it again!

This time however, not content with messing up one game-based movie, but he has the the cheek, insolence, contemptness and above all disrespect to cause one of our own to change her name, because of what Boll done to this character.

But this is NOT the worst horror film, as pointed out earlier a badly written screen play does not bode well with a good movie.

And so we are to the Big One...

The Final Oscar Award of the ceremony, and it is The Best Horror Film Ever Made. The nominees for this much-valued and hugely respected Award are...

Alien
Behind The Mask - The Rise Of Leslie Veron
Dawn of the Dead
Halloween (original)
Night of the Living Dead
The Exorcist
The Raven

And the winner...is a movie which has been hailed often as being THE milestone in horror. A goal set so highly that any other movie hasnt crossed it yet. Many have come close to its greatness, but NONE go beyond it.

Ladies And Gentlemen...The Best In Horror There is...

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u148/MozVegas73/NightoftheLivingDead.jpg

I’m going to be totally shameless and quote __V__ here, he sums up beautifully why

Night of the Living Dead wins this award

1 - Re-invention of the low budget horror movie genre by George Romero. (Halloween was low-budget too, but came MUCH later)

2 - Casting unknowns. (which is actually a strong point of the movie, because each unknown had brilliant acting skills, which went into creating the overall effect of this groundbreaking milestone...you dont find a single recognisable face in the movie, which only adds to the sheer terror...just watch the verbal skirmishes between Duane Jones and Karl Hardman, and Judith O'Dea as Barbara...prissy, egoistic, frail and fragile...all in 30 minutes...brilliant indeed!)

3 - Each moment of the movie is dipped in reality. (never done before, and seemed chillingly real...if you thought it was bad seeing monsters and killers go after people, just think of what would happen if PEOPLE went after PEOPLE...it could be your neighbor, your best friend, your relative...what would YOU feel THEN?)

4 - The opening scene in b/w when the car unwinds through the long path into the cemetery. (The most creepiest beginning ever seen in a horror movie till then...admit it, YOU squirmed in your seat watching that too)

5 - Racial undertones perfectly depicted as a prejudice. (Remember the black man fighting off the zombies AND his fellow survivors? Master touch of Romero...especially when he is the only one surviving the night, but doesn't survive the morning after...because he's shot by a WHITE vigilante group...a very subtle nuance by Romero upon the societal feelings in those times)

6 - The breathtaking cinematography. (Shot in near-dark conditions, with very average lighting...Romero manages to capture the essence of NotLD perfectly...its the story of one night, and one night only...yet THAT one night is an experience in jaw-dropping horror...the shadowing, the darkness suddenly expelled by fires, the beams...marvellous!)

7 - The unbelievable ending. (Just when everything is about to get right...when the lone survivor has survived through the night, and knows help has come for him...and he will leave this place alive and kicking...he is shot...and that ONE shot brings the audiences back to reality with a WHIPLASH! Racist angle spread again in all its glory!)

I think all of this should be sufficient to convince the critics of NotLD. It is GROUND-BREAKING, in more ways than one. Hence it has been hailed as a MILESTONE in horror, not only by me, but by MANY before me and after me.
