Couple played Dungeons & Dragons while babies starved

Two babies were left starving and suffering health problems while their parents played Dungeons & Dragons.

American couple Michael and Iana Straw, 25 and 23, from Nevada pleaded guilty to child neglect, brought about by their obsession with internet and video games, authorities said.

Their children, a boy aged 22 months and girl aged 11 months, were badly malnourished and near to death last month when doctors saw them after social workers took them to hospital.

Michael Straw, who was unemployed at the time of the incident, had come into a $50,000 inheritance and spent it on computer equipment and a large plasma TV.

The Straws allegedly failed to feed or properly clean their children because they couldn't tear themselves away from the computer. Their main obsession was with the fantasy role-playing Dungeons & Dragons series.

Prosecutor Kelli Ann Viloria said: "They had food; they just chose not to give it to their kids because they were too busy playing video games."

Police were called in after complaints from neighbors that one of the children would not stop crying. According to the police report, the family's home was strewn with rubbish bags.

Police said hospital staff had to shave the head of the girl because her hair was matted with cat urine. The 10-pound girl also had a mouth infection, dry skin and severe dehydration.

Her brother had to be treated for starvation and a genital infection. His lack of muscle development caused him difficulty in walking, investigators said.

Both children are doing well and gaining weight in foster care, prosecutor Viloria told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The parents face maximum jail sentences of 12 years each.
While child abuse because of drug addiction is common, abuse rooted in video game addiction is rare, Ms Viloria said.

Last month, experts at an American Medical Association meeting backed away from a proposal to designate video game addiction as a mental disorder, saying it had to be studied further.

Nevada Child Abuse Prevention said video game addiction's correlation to child abuse is "a new spin on an old problem".

"As we become more technologically advanced, there's more distractions. It's easy for someone to get addicted to something and neglect their children," a spokesman said.

Fucking losers should get the death sentence. Thats my final word on that. Hell they don't even deserve the injection, they should be starved to death.

I can't imagine it would be that easy - I would think you would have to try really hard to be that much of a fuckwit.

I thought d&d was not so much a video game...I mean, there HAS been video games, and even one recently from the series, but I doubt any of those have been all that enthralling from the look of them - I'm getting lots of feedback that the latest playstation d&d games are complete shit.
Now, the folks who sit around all like "you're in my dungeon" and rolling dice and shit, I could see this happening to.
Either way, "addiction" crutch excuse or not, they should have their parental rights revoked, and their children moved onto someone with better priorities.

Yeah, I just read another article that said they were British too. Which for some odd reason I'm not aware of suprises me. I thought it would have been an American couple. Is that odd that I doubt my fellow-citizens that much?

No. It's odd you don't doubt your entire fellow race that much.

Only ugly people say real beauty is on the inside.

Only slow people say the taking part is what counts.

Only cheap people say it's the thought that counts.

Only those who can't read say look at the pictures.

Only those with half a braincell would know that you wasted your time reading this and stopped back up there /\

HE WHO LAUGHS LAST THINKS SLOWEST !!!!!

I admit I've racked up countless hours playing video games and even called off work a few times becasue of it, but I wouldn't say that I'm an addict in any sense.I've never ignored everybody around me for a game. The times that I did call in where far and few between. There is nothing such thing as a gaming addict, just some fucking loser who doesn't know where the line of fantasy and reality is.Next they'll say it's a disease, well it's not cancer is a disease not video games.

They should put them beside a cell that has there game on it but make it where they can't get to it.That would be fun to watch them go insane.

That or have somebody play it infront of them, and taunt them with it, i mean like, make sure the screen is turned away and everything, so they can't even watch.

Well I must say, things like that do make us English seem like cunts. But then, this couple are. They can shove their D&D up their arses, but it's times like this that I realise all my pro-england comments don't account for every english person. Hear that Austin?

doesn't matter where you are, unfortunately there are people like this everywhere.

a few of weeks ago, here in indianapolis, indiana, some woman was caught letting her five year old drive her van because she was too drunk to drive. she told police that he was a good driver, which i guess means she had let him do it before. there was another younger child in the van, too.

sickening.
