Hard to believe that just a few short years ago Keanu Reeves couldn’t get a decent action pic to save his life – “Chain Reaction”, anyone? – but thanks to a little film whose sequels went off-the-rails called “The Matrix”, Hawaii’s finest is now the first name on everyone’s lips when they’re talking action, sci-fi or brain-bending drama.

Fox has recruited their “Speed” star to headline a remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still," its re-imagining of the 1951 Robert Wise-directed sci-fi classic, says Variety.

Reeves – whose next appears in the drama, “The Night Watchmen” – agreed over the weekend to play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar.

Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") is directing the movie, which FOX is planning as a major release.

I’ll really have to revisit “Stood Still” to know whether Reeves’ is a good fit for Klaatu, but “humanoid alien”? Sounds like perfect casting to me.

Kinda ironic they would get such a "wooden" actor such as Keanu to star in "The Day The Earth Stood Still".

I wouldnt say the Matrix sequels were "off-the-rails"...They werent as good as the first but I still liked them.

This is just a bad idea all around.

As stupid as it is to try to outdo Robert Wise's amazing original I do find the casting to be damn near perfect. I mean Keanu is really human is he? He's more like a reasonable facsimile of a human.

When I met Patricia Neal (star of the original Day the Earth Stood Still) a film critic was interviewing her onstage.

He informed her that they had just announced the casting of Keanu.

I thought she'd never stop laughing.

No joke.

And I think of Much Ado About Nothing and thinking "Why, Kenneth, why?"

I don't see why people seem to dislike him so much. Yeah, Chain Reaction for example, was quite awful, and his acting in it was truly terrible. However to me he seems to do sci-fi and bizarre movies well.

Johnny Mnemonic
The Matrix
Constantine
A Scanner Darkly

I personally enjoyed all of the above movies. I say give him a chance. :)

I have never understood that one myself......horrible casting.....

I don't think Reeves is a good actor by any stretch of the imagination but I do find something likeable about the guy. I can enjoy movies he is in. But I don't really like the idea of this remake, or the casting. Though Rod has a point....:p

My writing partner wrote an article for Film Threat Magazine about Keanu that praised his appeal, claiming his complete lack of interior character that makes him the perfect everyman. He's such an empty vessel that anyone can place themselves in his shoes - there's nothing prohibitive about him, nothing complex standing between his character and the audience.

But then again he also wrote an article called "Everything I Need to Learn in Life I Learned from ROADHOUSE"
-Be Nice... Until it's time to not be nice
-Always carry your medical records on you
-Pain is temporary, chicks dig scars
-The Mullet is always more powerful than the crewcut...etc

LOL.....:p There's something to that, I think.....

there truly are many, many life lessons that can be learned watching Roadhouse.

Jennifer Connelly has joined Keanu Reeves for the ''Day The Earth Stood Still'' remake.

The Scott Derrikson-directed pic kicks off as aliens land on Earth carrying a message for all humans: Live in peace or be destroyed.

Connelly is set to portray Helen Benson, the role Patricia Neal played in the 1951 original.

Fox has set a December start date in Vancouver.
