Good News - A friend of mine is directing a movie and wants me to play a role.

Bad News - I have to lose 20 pounds for the role.

I'm a glutton. I love my fatty foods and beer. I enjoy the weed and like to snack. I am happiest when indulging myself and believe the road to happiness truly lies in indulgence. Luckily I've been blessed with a rather high metabolism and a naturally thin frame, but as I rapidly approach 40 the engine has slowed down a bit and I'm getting a touch paunchy.

Never really cared to fix the problem, because I'm happy...BUT, I'm dying for a film role!

So this past week I've been running, doing crunches & push-ups, light weight training and SERIOUSLY reducing my caloric intake. No beer, no weed, no cheese (god, how I love cheese) No snaking and small portions at mealtime.

The first 5 pounds were a piece of cake and I'm happy to look leaner and fit, but now it's getting tricky. I'm not going for a Christian Bale/Machinist look, more like skinny rocker-boy.

Did I mention the role is for 2 scenes and has no lines!!!!!!! It's the role of a sick homeless man, so I'm supposed to be gaunt. Oh, and the producers aren't even sure they want me yet...so I'm gambling here.

Just wanted to vent because I'm cranky as hell and suffering for my art. Oh, well it's time for my next workout session.

Man, that sucks. No weed and beer:( .

Good luck with the role!

Good? Thats GREAT news...even its for a minuscule role.

Good to know you are moving that age-ing body around a bit to lose those few extra pounds around the waist...;)

Best thing would be to cut down on all sorts of starchy and oily food...concentrate on salads...

And oh yes, 1 hour at the treadmill everyday plus 10 miles light running is a MUST.

Now look into the mirror and say..."I am leaner!" to yourself every morning...

You have to admit that working out is fun though. It's almost like an addiction, especially once you find an exercise you really really enjoy. The food part is rough though, stay strong... avoid any enriched flour and all high fructose corn syrups.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying to get into it.

When you're my age and have bad knees from running track, working out loses its appeal...especially since I'm burning a lot more than I'm taking in and not trying to build any muscle mass.

It really depends on the person. I have a friend that loves it and yes, it is like an addiction for him. Can't get enough. And he scares me a little....haha....:p But I know others that have been working out for years and still have to force themselves to do it everyday. Just never got used to it, never have enjoyed it......but they want to stay in shape. So they continue with it.

Anyway, sounds tough Rod.....but good luck.

Seriously, it is tough...I must admit. And you arent growing any younger.

But keep it up. Start off slowly and increase your time as the days progress. You just might do it...

All the best, Sean. Hope you nail the role.

Shave all the hair off your body, hair has a weight, cut your arms off if you're one of those lazy homeless people, cut your feet off if you're a shoe-shinin', window-washin' homeless person.

I'm not quite that method.

I'm really not as concerned about weight as I am about body fat percentage. I need to look underfed and a bit hollow. And the hair and beard are going to be out of control soon!

I'm stay-at-home dad for two hyper boys of my own, why do you think I love my beer and weed so much?

And too bad I wasn't offered the role 2 months ago, when my hair and beard were at their longest (and I was at my heaviest)

eat rice, tuna, and apples. The rice will fill you up faster so you'll stop eating, and when you get hungry 20 minutes later (as rice tends to do) eat the tuna and apple.

i feel i need to lose a bit of weight but everyone keeps on saying it's just puppy fat and that i'm gonna have a growth spurt. My cousin and brother went through the same stage in life but i just found out that when they were at this stage of pudgyness, they went to the gym and went on diets. Well, they have lost the weight but i can't decide whether that was natural or because of the diet and xcercise. Did anyone else seem to get podgy when they were around 14? One other thing is that some people say that i'm just imagining it.

First of all, diet soda works. People say its bullshit, but I switched to diet soda and I lost two pounds the week it happened. Also, fatty foods can coexist with weight loss. Anybody who tells you otherwise is full of shit. It's just a matter of having one light meal, one heavy one and the occasional snack. And, if you're going to buy a high fat snack or a beer, walk to the store...if it is possible to walk places in LA. I hear tell people develop tanktread legs to get through traffic. But, all of the hardcore eat nothing but salad crap is just skinny person propaganda. Take it from a fat person who had lost fifteen pounds in a month without injuring himself. If you diet and give yourself nothing good to eat, you'll cheat. If you still retain some good foods and the occasional beer, you'll do okay. As for the weed, the problem's not so much munchies as energy level.

I am a Reverend - that was a wedding I performed a couple of months ago.

I've married 5 couples and even presided over a funeral service.

Doc F - I'd rather drink my own piss (don't knock it) than diet soda, but thanks. I'm totally being good and understand the need for fat (and all other food groups). I'll eat pizza, but just one slice - and homemade at that. I just won't snack on anything fatty. I'm just working on portion control

And Ferret - if you feel pudgy, exercise, but I wouldn't recommend dieting (other than increasing fruit/veg portions and laying off sodas & crisps) for anyone your age.

And in addition to my twice daily jogs, I'm planning on walking to the store tonight to by 1 beer (if I buy more, I'll drink more) as a reward for burning so much off already.

diet drinks may help you lose some weight - true.

diet drinks are healthier than ordinary drinks - false.

All the sweeteners in diet drinks really aren't god for you and aspartame. Wow. The creaters of it were taken to the world court because it's so bad.

P.S - Thanks for your advice Rod

P.P.S - A reverend who loves horror films and is a director and may be in a film and looks like he belongs in a rock band. Man you're cooler than i thought.

Try the Cardiac Diet, it's for people going into heart surgery and have to lose weight fast.
You lose 10 pounds in 3 days and then eat what you want for 4 and back on for 3 days and lose the other 10 pounds.
http://www.cartercountymarket.com/html/cardiac.html

There's another one where you eat 3 bananas each for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The next day eat 3 eggs for breakfast , lunch and dinner
The next eat 3 hot dogs(no bun) breakfast, etc etc.
Apparently you lose gobs of wieght

And then of course...there's crack.

The Cardiac Diet I mentioned in this thread, I started doing Sunday.
It's now the end of day three and I haven't weighed yet, will wait till morning.
But last night the scale said I lost 9 pounds.
The last of the baby weight is gone.:)

Now I'm going on the hot dog diet so I can look like all the other bony mommys around here:D JK

Roderick Usher

I don't own a scale, so I have no real idea how much I weigh or how much I've lost, but nearly 2 weeks in and my pants are loose and I'm looking better.

The running, crunches, push-ups and light weight work every day (haven't missed a day yet) combined with smaller food portions has yielded some rather quick results.
