The Legend of Johnny Cash is a great starting cd if you want something inexpensive and packed with hits of his from the beginning to the end.

agreed, The legend of Johnny Cash is cheap and a kick-ass collection of all things Cash. Also, try any of the America albums.

As an enormous fan (I named one of my kids after a Cash song) and knowing you, I'd recommend a couple of albums
CASH - American Recordings - #1 & #4 His resurgence into the counter-culture has been brilliant. You'll dig it because it's raw. Any of the Rick Rubin produced recent albums are pretty great, but I like these two best

but the Greatest are :
Live at San Quentin

and Live at Folsom

and I'm not a huge fan of compilations, I like to hear songs within the proper context of the original album...but I KNOW you'll love this one
MURDER - his best songs about the glory and the sorrow of taking a man's life

I usually don't like "greatest of" albums, but i too concur.

I'm listening to #5, A Hundred Highways and it's another amazing album. It's as if he knows it's his last, like he's saying he is ready. Listening to "Like the 309" again right now...
His version of "If Your Could Red My Mind" is simply stunning as well.

I'm more a Hank Williams man myself.
The first American Recordings album is amazing especially the song Thirteen.
