WILLIAM CASTLE COLLECTION: Sony
http://z2-ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0024FAG3U.01._SX303_SCLZZZZZZZ_V232057894_.jpg
Iconic horror director William Castle created a simple, but winning formula for his films: a little comedy, a lot of scares, a preposterous gimmick, and a clear sense that fright films should be fun. This even meant Castle would, like Hitchcock, appear in his trailers and even the movies themselves. Though his career spanned 35 years and included everything from westerns to crime thrillers, he'll always be remembered for his horror films from the late 50s to the mid-60s. And now Sony presents all eight of his Columbia features - three making their DVD debut, the rest newly-remastered - in one "spook-tac-ular" collection. And as a bonus, it includes the award-winning feature-length documentary, Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story.

Before Arachnophobia and Eight Legged Freaks...there was Kingdom of the Spiders.
While sophisticated digital effects have made it possible for swarms of beetles, bees and other insects to rampage across movie screens throughout the last decade, back in the Seventies filmmakers had no such tool. If you wanted to have scores of bugs invade the set, many of them had to be real or it looked hokey. Films about nature seeking revenge were all the rage thirty years ago, and the 1977 cult film Kingdom of the Spiders starring William Shatner pulled no punches – those were live tarantulas crawling all over the set...and the cast!
William Shatner stars as veterinarian “Rack” Hansen in this cult film about an Arizona town infested with a horde of arachnids that turn on the humans whose insecticides have depleted their natural food supply. After livestock belonging to Rack’s friend, rancher Walter Colby (Woody Strode), fall victim to a spider attack, entomologist Diane Ashley (Tiffany Bolling) arrives and tries to help Rack deal with the crisis — but with the big county fair fast approaching, Mayor Connors (Roy Engel) refuses to let them quarantine Colby’s ranch. Soon the remaining residents of the town must barricade themselves at lodge of Emma Washburn (Lieux Dressler) lodge in an effort to save themselves from the eight-legged invaders in the ultimate man versus spider showdown.
Directed by John Bud Cardos and written by Richard Robinson and Alan Caillou, Kingdom of the Spiders was released in 1977, grossing a respectable $17 million against a $500,000 budget.

Now it’s up to her best friend (Amanda Seyfried; Mamma Mia!) to stop the demonic diva’s reign of terror before it’s too late!

Oh by the way...if you are a fan of Oldboy and director Park Chan-wook, be sure to pick this up at your nearest DVD store (released yesterday) -
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41x2u8-%2BxNL._SS500_.jpg
From the acclaimed director of the global hit Old Boy comes a shockingly original vampire story with a chilling, erotic style. A blood transfusion saves the life of a priest, but also transforms him into a vampire. He struggles to control his insatiable thirst for blood until a love affair unleashes his darkest desires in deadly new ways.
Hailed as “Daring, operatic, and bloody funny!” (Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly), Thirst is a truly wicked love story that takes classic vampire lore to twisted new heights.

Tati (1907-1982) was the screen's most fastidious director of comedy and the greatest visual humorist since the silent days of Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd whom he revered, and this comic cornucopia contains all his feature films except Trafic (1971). The first four are increasingly ambitious masterpieces generally using onomatopoeic sound rather than dialogue. The last, Parade (1974), is an anthology of his stage mimes performed as in a circus and made for Swedish TV.
Tati burst on the world as a moustachioed rural postman in Jour de fête (1949), then adopted the screen persona of the accident-prone, neo-Luddite Monsieur Hulot whose slouch hat, raincoat, pipe, ankle-length trousers and umbrella made him as recognisable as Chaplin's tramp. In the black-and-white Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953), he disrupts a holiday resort; in Mon oncle (1957), beautifully designed and shot in colour, he leaves a trail of disasters in a gadget-laden Paris suburb. The satire on soulless, conformist modernity continues in Play Time (1967); shot on fantastic sets over three years, it bankrupted him, but is now regarded as his greatest work.

Arriving on December 29th from Paramount Home Entertainment...
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51mTRGuzTXL._SS500_.jpg
The “truly scary” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times), edge-of-your-seat horror film PARANORMAL ACTIVITY will make its presence known on DVD and two-disc Blu-ray December 29, 2009 from Paramount Home Entertainment.
Hailed as “a horror phenomenon” (Richard Corliss, Time) and “one of the scariest movies of all time” (BloodyDisgusting.com) the hypnotic and harrowing film drove filmgoers to demand that it play in their cities, ultimately earning over $100 million at the domestic box office. Loaded with suspense and punctuated by moments of sudden and unexpected horror right up to the shocking ending, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY is more frightening to watch at home, even with the lights on.
Written and directed by Oren Peli, the intense and chilling story follows a young, middle-class couple who become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic, but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially while they sleep.
The DVD and two-disc Blu-ray include the original theatrical version of the film, plus an unrated version with a shocking alternate ending not seen in theaters. The Blu-ray also includes a digital copy of the theatrical version.
The PARANORMAL ACTIVITY DVD is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 televisions with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround and Spanish 5.1 Surround (theatrical version only) and English, French and Spanish subtitles. The two-disc Blu-ray is presented in 1080p high definition with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital (theatrical version only) and English, English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles.
Special features include:
o Unrated version with alternate ending not seen in theaters
o Digital copy of theatrical version (Blu-ray only)

Rejoice!
The long-neglected, kaleidoscopic, absolutely bat-shit insane Japanese horror/comedy Hausu (1977) has been in Janus Films' distribution rights aggregate for years, and now it's finally going to get the works!
Hausu page on Janus' website (http://www.janusfilms.com/house/)
They've already started a theatrical run for the movie:
http://www.janusfilms.com/house/dates.html
and they're adding more dates all the time. They've confirmed that Chicago will be getting dates soon, too.
Eureka Masters of Cinema series will be releasing the film in Jan. 2010; Criterion will be handling the R1 release, though they haven't posted the release date yet.
Here's the cover for the MoC release:

Anyone that has not had the fortune of experiencing this singular weirdo-masterpiece should definitely make a showing if the fates allow, or at least pick it up on DVD when it comes out.
Experience heaps of violent, bizarre, childish goofiness!

Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?
You should, if you’re a Clint Eastwood fan. Because Warner Brothers has announced the forthcoming release of a massive retrospective box set of his work at the studio.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/ClintEastwood35Films35YearsatWar-1.jpg
Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros. is set to hit stores Feb. 16 at $179.98, and will cover a large swathe of the squinting icon’s filmography, from 1968’s Where Eagles Dare to last year’s Gran Torino (which is 40 years of the icon's film journey).
It will also include Eastwood Factor, a documentary on the filmmaker by Time magazine critic Richard Schickel.
The 19-disc set will, of course, comprise the Dirty Harry pentalogy, as well as his Oscar-festooned works like Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. It also has some of his not-so-classics, like the geriatrics-in-orbit Space Cowboys and the orangutan buddy comedy Every Which Way But Loose.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/ravenavi/ClintEastwood35Films35YearsatWarner.jpg
But the real gems that make this set worthwhile are the truly excellent films scattered throughout his career that weren’t made during his much-revered Philip Rothian late-life burst of creativity. Like Bird, his beautiful biopic of Charlie Parker; White Hunter, Black Heart, his thinly veiled biopic of John Huston; the emotionally draining A Perfect World; and The Outlaw Josey Wales, which demonstrated an interest in deconstructing the genre that made him famous, the Western, way before Unforgiven.
It’s a hell of a deal for any Eastwood fan. The only negative is it’s not available on Blu-ray.

We've confirmed this news with our industry sources, who have also informed us that the box set is going to blow away fans of the previous DVD Quadrilogy.
Not only have all of those previous extras have been included, but TONS of new material has been added as well exclusively for the Blu-ray release - extras that should make the BD WELL worth upgrading to.
The set will be released in mid-to-late 2010.

Peter Cushing and Andre Morell match wits in Cash on Demand (1961).
Oscar®-winning cinematographer Guy Green directed The Snorkel (1958), about a young girl who can’t convince anyone her stepfather is a murderer.

Kerwin Matthews finds himself in the middle of a strange mother/daughter threesome in the Jimmy Sangster-written Maniac (1963).

House (Hausu)
DVD, Eureka
To get a good idea of just how unhinged and bizarre this lost 1977 classic is, one only needs to look at the DVD's chapter headings. They start off quite innocently - "Summer Holiday", "Journey", "Supper" - but for the closing quarters of the film they are reduced to: "Not Good", "Blimey", "Indescribable" and "...!!!". When you watch the film you'll see these descriptions are perfectly accurate.
Director Nobuhiko Obayashi managed to convince producers that his debut movie would be as entertaining as Jaws, hence the vogueish one-word title. Instead of a shark, though, he relied on suggestions from his 13-year-old daughter as to what would supply the scares. Her list included a piano that bites fingers off and a severed head dropped down a well. He did the right thing listening to her. The story concerns a group of schoolgirls with names that sum up their character traits – Prof, Melody, Kung-Fu etc – taking a summer holiday in an aunt's country house. The house then tries to kill them. Simple as that.
Stylistically, it starts off over the top, then continues upwards. It's the kind of film that can have a man turn into a pile of bananas or a creepy painting of a cat spew blood everywhere without breaking its stride. It revels in artifice, with painted backdrops, excessive bloodletting and animation all over the place. The girls are attacked by lampshades, clocks, furniture, anything really. It's far too giddy and jaw-dropping to actually be scary but then you can't have everything. And everything is very nearly what this film delivers.

Lionsgate has released a trailer for what looks to be a stunning upcoming release of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now on Blu-ray. The film will be released in high definition on October 19th and will be available in a choice of 3-disc and 2-disc Blu-ray editions or as a Digital Download.
http://www.cinemaspy.com/Movie-News/New-Trailer-for-Apocalypse-Now-BD/4671
Love it or hate it, Apocalypse Now is one of the most controversial and unforgettable films ever made. Directed by Coppola, it is set during the Vietnam War and has a stellar cast that includes Marlon Brando (The Godfather), Martin Sheen (The West Wing), Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider), Harrison Ford (The Indiana Jones series) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix Trilogy). It is epic in scope, thought-provoking and powerfully non-commercial. It was also apparently hell to make and almost ended Coppola's life.
The story of the troubled production of Apocalypse Now is told in the award-winning documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. It is included in the 3-disc edition of the upcoming hi-def release. Both Blu-ray editions will have the theatrical version of the film and the extended version, Apocalypse Now Redux.

Image Entertainment's 14-disc presentation of the acclaimed anthology series Thriller is arguably among the most anticipated DVD releases for horror fans and vintage-TV aficionados alike.
Hosted by screen legend Boris Karloff, who also appeared in five episodes of the series, and aired on NBC from 1960 to 1962, Thriller immediately earned a reputation as one of the most frightening programs ever broadcast on television--a legacy that endures some four decades after it left the airwaves. Though it featured an all-star lineup both in front of and behind the camera--actors such as William Shatner, Richard Chamberlain, Rip Torn, Leslie Nielsen, Elizabeth Montgomery, Warren Oates, Robert Vaughn, and Marlo Thomas were among its guest stars, while directors included veterans like John Brahm (The Lodger), John Newland (One Step Beyond), and actor-directors Ida Lupino, Paul Henreid, and Ray Milland--the chills of Thriller hinged on its stories.
Psycho author Robert Bloch adapted several of his short tales for the series, including one of its most nerve-jangling episodes, "The Cheaters," about a pair of glasses that reveal terrifying truths to the wearer.
Twilight Zone scribes Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont also contributed scripts, while others were based on stories by Cornell Woolrich, Edgar Allan Poe, and Conan creator Robert E. Howard; the latter provided the source material for "Pigeons from Hell," the episode widely regarded as the most terrifying of the series, with Brandon De Wilde as a young man who encounters restless spirits and a unique monster in an abandoned Southern mansion.
Other standouts include Bloch's "The Grim Reaper," about a cursed portrait that brings death to its owners (including Shatner); "The Purple Room," with Torn as the skeptical inheritor of a haunted house, which viewers will immediately recognize as the Bates home from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho; and "La Strega," with Ursula Andress as a young woman bedeviled by her sorceress aunt.
The 14-disc Thriller: The Complete Series offers all 67 episodes of the series, each remastered and uncut for the first time since their original broadcast. Some 50 hours of supplemental features have also been included; chief among these are 24 hours of commentary tracks by Thriller participants like directors Arthur Hiller and Ted Post and actors Richard Anderson and Beverly Washburn (Spider Baby), as well as genre experts like Tim Lucas, David Schow, Gary Gerani, and Lucy Chase Williams. Episode promos and isolated score tracks by composers Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen) and Morton Stevens all help to underscore why no less an authority than Stephen King declared Thriller to be the best series of its type to ever air on television.

Severin Films today announced the 1/25/2011 release of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s internationally acclaimed Santa Sangre.
The 1989 production, rarely seen since its U.S. theatrical release, comes to Blu-ray and DVD featuring a restored print of the film’s European version as well as over 5 hours of Bonus Material.
In addition, Jodorowsky will be honored by The Museum Of Art & Design with his first-ever American retrospective. The series, called ‘Blood into Gold: the Cinematic Alchemy of Alejandro Jodorowsky’, runs from September 23rd thru October 8th and will feature the 81-year-old Chilean-born filmmaker/playwright/graphic artist/shaman in attendance to conduct a rare master class on his films and philosophy.
Jodorowsky exploded onto the international scene with his 1970s sensations EL TOPO and HOLY MOUNTAIN. Endorsed by John Lennon and embraced by underground culture worldwide, the films redefined movies as both art and entertainment while single-handedly creating the ‘midnight movie’ genre. Legal frustrations with the films’ owner (and Beatles’ manager) Allen Klein, as well as a failed attempt to direct a 14-hour movie adaptation of Dune starring Orson Welles and Salvador Dali, kept Jodorowsky from making films for 16 years until his triumphant return with SANTA SANGRE.
Blanca Guerra, Guy Stockwell and the filmmaker’s sons Axel and Adan Jodorowsky star in this surreal epic about a young circus performer, the crime of passion that shatters his soul, and the macabre journey back to the world of his armless mother and deaf-mute lover. “This is a movie like none I have seen before,” wrote Roger Ebert in his original four-star review, “a wild kaleidoscope of images and outrages, a collision between Freud and Fellini. It contains blood and glory, saints and circuses, and unspeakable secrets of the night. And it is all wrapped up in a flamboyant parade of bold, odd, striking imagery, with Alejandro Jodorowsky as the ringmaster. SANTA SANGRE is a movie in which the inner chambers of the soul are laid bare.”
Bonus Features on the Blu-ray and two-disc DVD include deleted scenes, domestic and international trailers, an audio commentary with Jodorowsky, multiple documentaries, new on-camera interviews with the majority of the film’s cast and crew, and coverage of Jodorowsky’s forthcoming NYC appearances. A complete list of Extras, as well as preview clips, will be posted in the coming days at SantaSangreFilm.com.
“SANTA SANGRE is a landmark acquisition for us,” says David Gregory, co-founder and CEO of Severin Films. “Jodorowsky is one of the few true visionaries of cinema, and the opportunity to bring his modern masterpiece back to America is a genuine honor. Our restoration of the film, combined with an unprecedented collection of Bonus Features, will now introduce this brilliant film to a whole new audience.”

On September 28, 2010, the original 1933 RKO classic King Kong makes its long awaited debut on Blu-ray Disc™.
Presented by Warner Home Video, the newly remastered King Kong features extensive bonus content, including a collectible Blu-ray Book written by renowned film historian Rudy Behlmer; a feature length documentary on Kong creator Merian C. Cooper, directed by acclaimed filmmakers Kevin Brownlow and Christopher Bird; commentary by Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston with Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray; and a seven-part documentary that delves deeply into just about every aspect of the making of the film.
With 32 pages of rare photography and trivia, the captivating Blu-ray Book, written by Rudy Behlmer, centers around the vision of director, Merian C. Cooper and his larger than life persona that brought the story of King Kong to the screen. A prolific film researcher and historian, Behlmer personally interviewed Cooper and has written numerous books and contributed to a wide variety of documentaries, videos, DVDs and laser discs about Hollywood's Golden Age.
In this very special Blu-ray release, the newly remastered film is presented in its 1933 entirety and includes scenes that were originally considered too shocking for the 1938-1956 re-releases. With equal parts adventure, horror and old-fashioned romance, King Kong is a milestone of movie-making that has endured for more than seven decades. Named as one of the “100 Best Films of All Time” by Time Magazine, King Kong premiered in New York City in 1933. The film was an instant success, breaking box-office records to become one of the top moneymakers of the 1930s.
Available on Blu-ray September 28, 2010.

Lucio Fulci's trio of his US & UK based films, released together for the 1st time ever in this must-have "Godfather of Gore" definitive collector's set.
Titles Comprise:
New York Ripper: Do you like your horror films nice 'n' nasty? Then brace yourself for this notorious 1982 gem of depravity that is every bit as vile and stylishly shocking as you've been led to believe.
Directed by the old scalp-ripper himself, Lucio Fulci, he's in full flesh tearing form as the cops of New York hunt down a psychopath with a penchant for slicing his victims to the bone but not before he has his fun with them first... "Quack! Quack! Quack!"
If you've recently revisited old video nasties only to be disappointed then this is the ultimate sex 'n' slash fest to test your nerve with a realistic sadistic streak that will have you begging for mercy!
Manhattan Baby: From Lucio Fulci, the director of New York Ripper, comes his utterly bizarre descent into a surreal world of creepy kids, Egyptology, flesh tearing birds, walls that bleed, creepy tombs and much more!
A succinct plot synopsis is frankly near impossible but here goes: There's a possessed Egyptian amulet, what looks like a gate to hell and rip-off moments from a variety of classic genre films including The Exorcist, The Awakening, The Birds, The Omen and most notably Rosemary's Baby.
Despite the dubious plotting Fulci was at the height of his powers when he made this highly atmospheric and stunningly shot horror film that makes up in classic set pieces and pierced eyeballs what it lacks in coherence!
Black Cat: We all know director Lucio Fulci for his depraved nasties like New York Ripper, but if you're wondering why in France he's held in the same esteem as Hitchcock, then the deliciously eerie The Black Cat is a great place to start.
Inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe tale, this black cat is a malevolent moggy that stalks through a sleepy English town appearing to fulfil the murderous wishes of its owner, the sinister psychic medium Professor Miles (Patrick Magee in fine deranged form). What Professor Miles has not reckoned on is his cat turning him into the next mouse to slowly kill!
High on gothic atmospheric thanks to the moody cinematography of Sergio Salvati, this unusual Fulci tale of claustrophobic terror is a little seen gem that compares to the best output of the Hammer and Amicus studios.
*
Suitable for 18 years and over.
* Containing a booklet adapted by Stephen Thrower from his definitive, highly acclaimed book, "Beyond Terror - The Films Of Lucio Fulci
* Each DVD with Reversible Sleeve featuring original artwork
* The artwork of this limited edition set has been exclusively created for Shameless by top British film poster artist Graham Humphrey

The full frame (1.33:1) transfer is cleaner, brighter, and more vivid than the previous standard def edition, and though there are moments of brief picture damage, the transfer is the absolute best one could hope for. Along with the restored picture, the audio has been remastered with a new Dolby 2.0 stereo track (not DD 4.0, as it was previously listed), along with the original mono (DD 1.0), both in Japanese, with optional English subtitles.
A two-disc set, the film is now presented on one disc, and the supplements on the other. The feature film disc contains two commentaries: the original Jeck track (still a high-water mark in cinematic commentaries) and a critics’ roundtable with Stephen Prince, David Desser, Tony Rayns, Donald Richie, and Joan Mellen.
Disc Two kicks off with “Akira Kurosawa: It is Fun to Create” (49 min.), a multi-episode Japanese TV series that highlighted the films of Akira Kurosawa, episodes of which are also available on the Criterion releases of Ikiru, Kagemusha, The Lower Depths, Ran, and Stray Dog. This one is specifically about Samurai and features comments from Kurosawa, co-writer Shinobu Hashimoto, set decorator Koichi Hamamura, script supervisor Teruyo Nogami, and actors Seiji Miyaguchi and Yoshio Tsuchiya.
This is followed by “My Life in Cinema: Akira Kurosawa” (116 min.), which has fellow director Nagisa Oshima in conversation with Kurosawa about his films and career, but focuses mainly on his rise in the ranks.
The featurette “Seven Samurai: Origins and Influences” (55 min.) enlists Stephen Prince, Joan Mellen, Tadao Sato, David Desser, Tony Rayns, and Donald Richie to talk about the film and where it came from.
The second disc finished out its supplements with three trailers and the film’s teaser, and two still galleries for behind-the-scenes stills and poster images.
The set also comes with a booklet with essays by Kenneth Turan, Peter Cowie, Phillip Kemp, Peggy Chiao, Alain Silver, Stuart Galbraith IV, directors Sidney Lumet and Arthur Penn, and from Mifune himself.
Few Blu-rays have been as essential as this one.

Yeah, I argued back and forth with myself about spending the money on this, and then I was lucky enough to receive it as a gift. I would have eventually bought it myself, though. It's worth it.

Universal announced today that they'll be releasing a 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Disc of Halloween II on September 13th.
The flick is actually going to have supplemental material including an alternate ending and...the fantastic 1984 documentary Terror in the Aisles will be included as a special feature!
Hosted by Donald Pleasence (Halloween) and Nancy Allen (Carrie), Terror in the Aisles is a history of horror films using clips from those very films.
Donald Pleasance (Halloween I & II) and Nancy Allen (Dressed to Kill, Carrie) take us through some of Hollywood's most terrifying moments in horror history in this documentary-type movie, which features several of the finest horror, sci-fi, and crime drama films of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Included are 'Night of the Living Dead', 'Psycho', 'Jaws', 'Halloween I & II', and 'The Fog', as well as countless others. Be ready to be scared as Terror at the Aisles looks at all of the gory sequences from major films, such as the shower scene from "Psycho" and the midnight swim from "Jaws". Blood and gore abound making the film definitely not for the squeamish.
Terror in the Aisles arrives to Blu-Ray as part of the 30th anniversary edition of Halloween II on September 13th.

Two new horror Criterions!
Island of Lost Souls (http://www.criterion.com/films/27861-island-of-lost-souls) (1932)
http://criterion-production.s3.amazonaws.com/release_images/3521/586_box_348x490.jpg
"A twisted treasure from Hollywood’s pre-Code horror heyday, Island of Lost Souls is a cautionary tale of science run amok adapted from H. G. Wells’s novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. In one of his first major movie roles, Charles Laughton is a mad doctor conducting ghastly genetic experiments on a remote island in the South Seas, much to the fear and disgust of the shipwrecked sailor (Richard Arlen) who finds himself trapped there. Erle C. Kenton’s touchstone of movie terror is elegantly shot by Karl Struss, features groundbreaking makeup effects that inspired generations of monster-movie artists, and costars Bela Lugosi in one his most gruesome roles."
Kuroneko (http://www.criterion.com/films/27628-kuroneko) (1968)
http://criterion-production.s3.amazonaws.com/release_images/3509/584_box_348x490.jpg
"In this poetic and atmospheric horror fable, set in a village in war-torn medieval Japan, a malevolent spirit has been ripping out the throats of itinerant samurai. When a military hero is sent to dispatch the unseen force, he finds that he must struggle with his own personal demons as well. From Kaneto Shindo, director of the terror classic Onibaba, Kuroneko (Black Cat) is a spectacularly eerie twilight tale with a shocking feminist angle, evoked through ghostly special effects and exquisite cinematography."

In 1963, he introduced stunned audiences to a new kind of cinema with Blood Feast – and in the process single-handedly launched “splatter cinema.” He is writer/director Herschell Gordon Lewis and he is truly the “Godfather of Gore.”

The man they pushed too far is coming for you--in high-def! The exploitation revenge classic THE EXTERMINATOR burns onto Blu-ray in a newly re-mastered uncut version! Christopher George, Robert Ginty and Samantha Eggar star in The Exterminator, James Glickenhaus' explosive story of Vietnam vet John Eastland (Ginty), a man who launches a bloody vendetta against the New York underworld when his best friend is brutally beaten by a vicious street gang. Eastland becomes a vigilante hero to the public, but to police The Exterminator is a psychopath capable of dangerously undermining an entire government administration. Synapse Films is proud to present The Exterminator in its more violent and gory director's cut, lovingly restored in high-definition from original vault materials. He was the “Man of a Thousand Faces.” Generations of filmgoers the world over have been thrilled by his portrayals that showcased – and more often than not, empathized with – the shadows of human nature. And now the makeup artistry of a true cinematic pioneer can be seen in high definition!
Chaney stars as Erik, the “Phantom” who lives deep within the twisting catacombs and dungeons beneath the 19th century Paris Opera House. The singers all speak of a ghost who walks the halls, yet no one has ever seen him. But when Erik falls in love with the beautiful aspiring singer Christine, rumor becomes reality when he kidnaps her and holds her hostage in his lair. Hoping, praying that she might see beyond the mask and the disfigurement hiding under it...
As in all his films, Chaney designed the now signature makeup for the Phantom, employing techniques – like pining his nose with wires – that not only expressed the outward physical pain of the characters, but inflicted great personal discomfort on the actor bringing them to life.
“If I am the Phantom, it is because man's hatred has made me so... If I shall be saved, it will be because your love redeems me.”
On November 1st, Image Entertainment releases the Lon Chaney classic Phantom of the Opera for the first time on Blu-ray! The Blu-ray features 3 versions of the film – assembled together for the first time in a single release -- including a brand-new high definition digital transfer from the 35mm negative, plus Gaylord Carter's famous theatre organ score, released for the first time as recorded in stereo!
Produced by renowned silent film authority and preservationist David Shepard, the Phantom of the Opera Blu-ray™ includes the following versions:
- Brand-new HD digital transfer of the 24fps version of 1929 reissue (Academy Aspect Ratio; 16x9 pillar-boxed) from the 35mm negative, with tinted sequences including the Bal Masque sequence in two-strip Technicolor. Featuring a brand new music score by Alloy Orchestra, plus Gaylord Carter’s famous theatre organ score, released for the first time in stereo
- Brand-new HD transfer of 20fps version of 1929 reissue with tinting, Technicolor and hand-coloring. Symphonic score composed by Gabriel Thibaudeau, performed by I Musici de Montreal, conducted by Yuri Turovsky with Claudine Cote, soprano presented in stereo, along with a new full-length audio essay by Dr. Jon Mirsalis
- Standard definition presentation of the original 1925 release from a 16mm tinted source copy. Accompanied by a new piano score by Dr. Frederick Hodges.
The Phantom of the Opera Blu-ray™ also contains the following bonus features:
- Theatrical trailer
- Photo Gallery

It's 10 pm and the employees of Michigan's Walnut Lake Supermarket are in for a really bad night. The place is shutting its doors for good, and the night crew has a long shift ahead of them... longer than they think! The lovely check-out girl has a deranged ex-boyfriend, the store's phone lines are cut, and the employees start dying in the most stomach-churning ways imaginable (courtesy of Academy Award®-winning KNB EFX Group). A deranged killer is on the loose in the grocery store! Can anyone stop this murderous intruder?
Synapse Films is proud to present Scott Spiegel's INTRUDER, the "holy grail" of extreme gore cinema, in an all-new 2K high-definition transfer of the original uncut, uncensored version. Sam Raimi (director of THE EVIL DEAD and SPIDER-MAN) and Renée Estevez (TV's THE WEST WING) star in this cult film classic that critics call "a gorgeous low-budget shocker that has long been one of the best kept secrets of the genre scene" (Alan Simpson, Sex Gore Mutants). Be sure to look for Bruce Campbell (THE EVIL DEAD, TV's BURN NOTICE) in a cameo role!

Bad news on The Devils DVD: according to Twichfilm, "WB will not allow BFI or anyone else to release the film in its entirety at the moment. Additionally, the licensors have prevented BFI from releasing the film on Blu-ray as well as denying them access to the 2004 restoration."
So it looks like this won't be the original uncut version, but rather the edited version for UK cinemas (which was edited down from the original to get the X rating). And it won't be the most recent restoration, either.
Fuck Warner Brothers.

Battle Royale is a film considered so violent and controversial that it is widely held that it was banned across North America.
Well, that wasn't the case. No distribution company in the states has been willing to pick up the Japanese horror flick until now that is thanks to Anchor Bay Entertainment. Check out the full details below as well as the trailer.
From the Original Release:
A title that has shocked, thrilled and unnerved audiences. A film whose fiendishly simple premise has inspired many imitations, including the upcoming The Hunger Games motion picture. Based on the 1999 global best-seller by Koushun Takami, the futuristic tale first came to the screen in 2000, directed by the legendary Kinju Fukasaku. Authors, filmmakers and film fans the world over consider the film and its 2003 sequel Battle Royale II: Requiem sacred cinematic classics. And now, fans can own them on high-definition Blu-ray and DVD!
On March 20th, Anchor Bay Entertainment proudly brings the Battle Royale: The Complete Collection to Blu-ray and DVD for the first time in North America. Featuring state-of-the-art HD transfers, hi-res audio and a wealth of bonus features that delve deep into this truly international phenomenon - the three disc Blu-ray plus bonus DVD set has an SRP of $49.99 and an SRP $44.98 for the four disc DVD. Battle Royale will also be released separately on Blu-ray for an SRP of $29.99 and DVD for an SRP of $24.98. Pre-Book on both is February 22. Battle Royale will be available digitally via select outlets including iTunes and Xbox LIVE.
42 students, Three days, One survivor – No Escape. Welcome to the world of Battle Royale!
Battle Royale:
In the near future, the economy has collapsed, unemployment has soared and juvenile crime has exploded. Fearful of their nation’s youth, the Japanese government passes The BR Law: Each year, a 9th grade class is sent to a remote island where they will be locked into exploding neck collars, given a random weapon, and forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left. Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill) and screen legend Takeshi Kitano (Boiling Point, Brother) star in the movie that has been argued, acclaimed and banned around the world. More than a decade later, it remains one of the most savage, shocking and emotionally powerful films of all time. Now experience the complete Director's Cut of Kinji Fukasaku's uncompromising masterpiece - nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards - available uncensored and unrated for the first time ever in America.
Battle Royale: The Complete Collection
In 2000, director Kinji Fukasaku unleashed Battle Royale, his violently poetic epic about an innocent group of Junior High students forced by the government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. It was nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards, launched a global phenomenon, and banned from screens by frightened civic groups and distributors across America. Three years later, the equally disturbing sequel – featuring a new class, new rules, and a brutal terrorist plot by the first film's young survivors - triggered its own tragic firestorm around the world. Now for the first time ever, you can see it all: Experience the entire Battle Royale saga on 4 discs that forever blasts open one of the most potent, shocking and savagely influential sagas in motion picture history.

Can't wait to get my Bond set. Pre-ordered it like 6 months ago. I had all the James Bond Blu-Ray's they had released before they announced this set and I can only say they look fantastic restored. Luckily, I was able to sell all my old Blu-Rays on Ebay to pay for this set.

September 24 - Curse of Chucky
Alright! A release date! I for one am looking forward to this, the series has jumped around a bit. I didn't like 3 and Seed was almost too campy but overall this has been a pretty solid series thus far. And...c'mon...it's Brad fuckin' Dourif! I sat through Critters 4 to see him, which probably says more about me than Dourif, though...
I also am intrigued and like the idea of going back to the "non stitched" chucky. Could Andy be back in the fold...?

FRIDAY THE 13TH THE COMPLETE COLLECTION Coming to Blu-ray, 9/13
On September 13th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will provide plenty of blood-curdling thrills when Friday The 13th: The Complete Collection debuts on Blu-ray. For the first time, all twelve Friday the 13th films will be packaged together, (with seven of them making Blu-ray debuts) as a result of a strategic distribution alliance between Paramount and Warner announced last fall, granting Warner exclusive video distribution rights to over 600 Paramount titles. The set also includes a Friday The 13th Killer Extras Bonus DVD.
This intense 'slasher' series is one of the longest-running and most successful horror franchises in film history, surpassing the domestic theatrical box-office grosses of such legendary series as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The film that turned psycho killer Jason Voorhees and his infamous hockey mask into a pop culture icon has also bested the horror competition as the #1 home entertainment seller, with total sales of $119.7M to date.
The 10-disc collection ($129.95 SRP) includes the twelve films on nine Blu-ray discs, as well as a killer DVD bonus disc full of special features on the making of the famous franchise. The must-own set will be presented in a collectible tin case with 11 hours of previously released special features and a 40-page soft cover book. The book is excerpted from Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday The 13th, a fan-favorite volume that's viewed as the ultimate memoir of the series, and highlights some of the 200 interviews, 600 photos, storyboards, concept art and more. Also included is a brand new, official Camp Crystal Lake embroidered Counselor Patch.
Friday The 13th: The Complete Collection also includes digital versions of all 12 films with UltraViolet, allowing viewers to download and instantly stream the films to a wide range of devices from computers and compatible tablets to smartphones, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players.
One of the most frightening franchises in film history, Friday The 13th focuses primarily on the character of Jason Voorhees, who drowned as a young child at Camp Crystal Lake due to the inattentiveness of camp counselors. Many years later, the camp becomes the scene of a number of murders - all of which are either committed or motivated by the avenging Jason, who forever lurks at Crystal Lake with his finely-honed machete.
Films in The Collection include:
· Disc 1 - Friday the 13th (1980)
· Disc 2 - Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
· Disc 3 - Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D (1982)

Yep, that was me. I made a separate thread in the Modern Horror section. This is very exciting news. At long last the public will get to see the film Clive Barker made.
One of the actors from the film was at the showing I attended. In the final released film his role is pretty minor, and in the original cut his part was larger. That night was the first time he saw the film in it's full length and he was quite emotional seeing his part play the way Barker wanted it to.

Whoops, I should have checked that forum section. Interesting story about that actor. It further adds to the aura for me about how different these two versions might be. Really looking forward to seeing Cabal.

Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist (NEW) 40 years after his novel was published,The Exorcist author, screenwriter and producer returns to where it all began. First stop is a cabin/guest house in the hills of Encino, California, where Blatty wrote the novel. The author visits the place for the first time in 40 years and shares not only memories of writing the book, but also discusses how it inspired him. We then meet Blatty in two key and iconic locations; Georgetown University where the film was shot, and at the now-famous Exorcist steps. Throughout, Blatty reads from his novel, including an excerpt from a chilling newly published passage.
Talk of the Devil (NEW) – While at Georgetown University, William Peter Blatty heard about a true case of possession from Father Eugene Gallagher. At the time the film came out, the priest talked at length about exorcism, the true story and about Blatty; this footage is now available for the first time in many years. It is as revealing as it is shocking.

Criterion Announces New Dual-Format Editions
The Criterion Collection has announced its slew of releases for the month of November and, in typical Criterion fashion, the films could not be more eclectic and diverse. Alongside the bevy of titles is another interesting development in the video-distribution company, as November will mark the beginning of all Criterion released being dual-format editions, encompassing both regular DVD and Blu-Ray capabilities.

Insidious 2 is on my want list. I know a lot of people weren't really happy with it, but I loved how haunting it was. Paranormal Horror is probably one of my favorite themed of horror movies. Not many people like the jump scares but I love them. This movie definitely got me to jump a lot and it was beyond scary for me. Especially when on those spirits appeared in the kids room. That would no doubt scare me if that truly happened to me.

The scariest comedy of all time gets resurrected as Young Frankenstein: 40th Anniversary arrives on Blu-ray September 9 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Comedy icons Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr and Madeline Kahn star in Mel Brooks’ brilliantly outrageous riff on Mary Shelley’s classic story of Frankenstein. After inheriting his grandfather’s castle in Transylvania, young Dr. Frankenstein (Wilder) follows in his ancestor’s freaky footsteps as he sets out to reanimate a dead body in Brooks’ “funniest, most cohesive comedy to date.” (The New York Times)
Young Frankenstein was nominated for two Academy Awards* and two Golden Globe Awards**. More than 40 years later, the film has stood the test of time, ranking at lucky number 13 on the American Film Institute’s list of the top 100 funniest films.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary, fans of Young Frankenstein can also enter themselves for a chance to win an autographed set photo from the man himself, Mel Brooks!”
Blu-ray Bonus Features:
