Does anyone else hate Horror Comedies?

I'm just curious, because personally I cannot stand this genre. To me, the whole point of watching a horror movie is to be horrified, if I wanted to laugh I would watch a comedy.
1408 is a good example of a good concept ruined by trying to throw comic relief in the mix. No real person is going to be cracking jokes under those circumstances.
I think that most jokes in horror movies are very cheesy, and they bring the rest of the movie down.
I also find that most people that appreciate horror comedies, appreciate them because they just can't handle a real horror movie. Put someone who was actually scared by 1408 in front of say...high tension, and that person probably will not sleep for days.
Sorry, just a little rant, I'm sick of not being able to find a movie to scare me anymore.

Hmmm, it seems like everyone here seems to have a superiority complex around here, from the other post I've read. why can't anyone here seem to stay on topic?
And I don't mind a horror movie having a couple jokes in it, but when the jokes are there specifically to relieve tension, say right after a really scary scene, it's annoying.
and I've never actually watched those, but if they're full of cheesy jokes, and campy characters, I'd rather not.

Hmmmmm....no can't say that I do hate horror comedies.....since Evil Dead 2 is my favorite film of all time. :D
When done well, a horror comedy is lots of fun, and often can be quite unique, and sometimes even, dare I say, genuis.
Yes, there are times I find humor inappropriate in a film, sometimes the humor falls flat, its true. That's not a reason to hate the whole genre, in my opinion.
But that's me, and I also can appreciate all kinds of horror films.

Plenty, and the n00b title is usually used by people that are anal retentive bastards. Usually people that throw this title around try to be moderators when they really arent, telling you where specific post belong when it's not really any of your business. So yeah, superiority complex, maybe even a highschool attitude, I bet you loved to remind freshmen in highschool that they were freshmen, just to give yourself a little boost in morale.
But anyways, my intention wasn't to start an argument in this thread, I just wanted to know how many people agreed with me.

I disagree with every one of your conclusions. I've watched every type of horror movies, including the bloodiest most gore ridden splatter fests, the most suspenseful high tension thriller, and horror comedies. I have enjoyed them all and none of them have given me any nightmares.

And people DO crack jokes in horrible situations in order to relieve tension- it's part of the survival instinct.

Most MODERN horror comedies are terrible. That's just my opinion- but some notable exceptions are The Evil Dead movies and Shaun of the Dead. The Scary Movie tyoe stuff isn't my cupof tea- I think those are just bad filmmaking. There are some great classic horror comedies like The Raven, the original Little Shop of Horrors and Comedy of Terrors.

Horror comedy is a hard genre to do well, so many of them ARE bad- but I'm not going to discount the entire genre, nor am I going to make any pompous generalizations about what type of people may or may not like them.

I love movies from pretty much every sub-genre of horror, I like when directors and writers experiment. Shaun of the Dead, Re-Animator, Dead and Breakfast, Bubba Ho-Tep, Army of Darkness, and others really make me love the sub-genre especially because I dig comedy (and mixing it with gore and horror just tickles me even more). With the 1408 thing, if I was really scared I think I would make jokes to try and lighten the mood to take some of the pressure off me mentally. Anyway I love horror comedy and I love true horror films, don't generalize, chillax a bit, and you'll do fine here. Remember, it's your OPINION, some people don't want to share it with you but thanks for offering.

As regards comedy in horror, if you are a genuine horror fan then you shouldnt be distinguishing quality horror, except from separating the good flicks from the bad.

Tell me, how many horror-comedies have you seen before "1408"? Or even, before 2000? I m assuming very few, since you sound like one of the new generation (HENCE the newbie/noob tag).

Honestly my parents sheltered me from most horror movies, so I've only been watching really serious horror movies for like 5 years maybe. And I have yet to see alot of the old classics. So I do have alot to learn about the genre. But arachnaphobia, c'mon the humor just killed it.

Just watch An American Werewolf in London, or The Evil Dead, or Evil Dead 2, or Bride of Frankenstein...horror comedies can be an unbelievable source of entertainment.

Sometimes, in the case of 1408 (which I don't consider a horror comedy, but you do), the small doses of injected humor add a little bit of life into the picture. If we don't believe the character is a human being, we don't give two shits what happens to him. Backstory helps amplify his worth to us, and so does a little comic relief.

But......... Arachnaphobia was a *tongue in cheek* film anyway!! Not meant to be taken seriously.

Look at it this way, in the 1954 film "Them", people from that era were scared witless by the movie. Today, we would fall about laughing at the superimposed *giant* ants. But in its day, it was a scary horror movie.

Yes, some scripts may pick an opportune time to fit a bit of humour in, especially when you are expecting to feel uneasy at a particularly scary scene - but it is about choice. Some audience will find it funny and appropriate. while others will be disappointed.

Try out the list ____V____ posted earlier - some of those movies are quite graphic and a gorefest, but the humour involved (tongue in cheek as said earlier) is perfect for the plot.

As for finding a movie that could actually scare you - its rare these days as we become more de-sensitised by the news, video games, documentaries, squillions of movies coming out for the sake of it, etc., etc..

I enjoy some Comedy horror films. One which I seen recently was Slither that was a good comedy horror imo or Eight Legged Freaks also good.
When it comes to small parts of humour in horror, when timed well it works, however I have seen myself rolling my eyes when humour is badly added to a good horror film.
Scary Movie is a spoof it really has nothing to do with horror except it is taking the piss.
All in all I like Comedy horror films and I believe a small amount of humour injected into a horror film can help.

I'd like to throw in Two Thousand Maniacs to this mix. Oh, and Gore Gore Girls. And Gruesome Twosome which is bloody hillarious since it's basically Nancy Drew vs. the Voorhees family. Bucket of Blood is sublimely funny and a great commentary on art and sensitivity. Behind the Mask:Rise of Leslie Vernon had me in stitches and it also functioned as a good horror film. Texas Chainsaw Massacre's humor is incredible, as is that in Nekromantik. Humor and horror naturally pair up, you can see it as far back as Ovid, Virgil and Dante. Horror pokes at society and mankind's weak points, and comedy does the same thing so the two are almost inseparable. Both come from "I am sickened" or "this is ridiculous" responses and both aim to show the audience those feelings. So almost every horror film is also a horror comedy in a way. Watch the Abominable Doctor Phibes or Theater of Blood. Both of them show this really eloquently.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre's humor is incredible, as is that in Nekromantik.

OK, what? Incredible humor in Texas Chainsaw Massacre? and Nekromantik? (besides the ending) I'm a huge closet fan of the Nekromantik movies(mostly the 2nd one) and I can't remember either of them having much comedy. Sure it has sick little funny parts like when she sucks out the dead guy eyeball and pops it back in and when the apple picker gets shot but I mean incredible comedy?

also I don't see how people can prefer the first nekromantik, the 2nd one is more fucked up and it has Dave Coulier playing the piano. (it's dave coulier I don't care what anyone says)

The grandfather in Texas Chainsaw is really dark comedy, and much of Nekromantik is comedic. The porno theater scene, the overblown apartment, the girl reading to the corpse and just the general vibe. I didn't like Nekromantik 2 because it was too nihilistic and it felt like it overstepped some boundaries that the first one was just at the edge of.
