Hi.

It's Marya again with another look at one of my favorite episodes on television.

This episode comes from a TV series called Bors Karloff's Thriller which ran from 1960-1962 for two seasons.

I have already reviewed the series on an earlier blog so I will dispense with that.

The episode I am herewith describing was shown during the second season and is entitled The Incredible Dr. Markesan.

The episode stars:

Boris Karloff as Dr. Konrad Markesan

Dick York as Fred Bancroft, Dr. Markesan's nephew

Caroyln Kearney as Fred's wife, Molly

Henry Hunter as Professor Angus Holden

Richard Hale as Prof. Latimore.

Being the old vampire I am, I remember this on TV. I was in high school and a freshman at college.when this series was being shown. This came on our PBS station in the 1980's and on the Sci Fi Channel in the late 1990's. However, this series is not frequently shown on TV. Or at least not on the channels I have. I guess if I had a dish with 400 channels it probably would be playing somewhere.

The plot of the story is that Fred and Molly have enrolled in Penrose College and need to get some part time work in order to pay the bills. However in the mean time they need place to stay until they get their jobs.

Fred recommends that they stay at his Uncle Konrads' place where he enjoying staying at as a child.

However, when they arrive the place is completely run down and no one seems to be living there. As they start to leave the house, Dr. Markessan appears. He does not want them to stay but after he finds out that they are going to enroll in Penrose College, he agrees to let them stay, stating that he would not want his colleagues to think bad of him.

The conditions is that they stay in the master suite and that area as well as use the kitchen ( which is completely empty), but at night they either have to stay in their room from dusk until dawn or be out of the house completely.

They agree and find out that they are locked in by an outside bolt.

Molly visits the campus and goes to the grocery store. She reports that the outlook for jobs is promising.

For want of something to do, Fred reads some old newspapers while Molly is completely knocked out and in the bed. He hears some voices, and while Molly was at the store, he devised a contraption to unloosen the bolt.

Fred goes downstairs to see what is happening and he sees three horrible looking men with his Uncle. His Uncle is asking them to repeat their testimony to be given at a new hearing to reinstate him back at Penrose College. He also hears Prof. Angus Holden's name mentioned. One of the men, Professor Latimore, asks Markesan to please let them sleep in peace. Fred remembers seeing in one of the old newspapers where this person had died.

He and Molly discuss this and they always see him coming in from the back road. Molly states that there is only a swamp in the back and behind it a graveyard.

The next night when the voices occur again, Fred tells Molly to stay in the room and do not go out.

He heads for the university to contact Professor Holden. Fred finds out a terrible fact. His Uncle has been dead for years.

Professor Holden says that Konrad Markesan was dismissed from the University on the claim that he could raise the dead from mold found in graves. Professor's Latimore, Charing & Grant were on the committee to dismiss the "mad" doctor. Professor Holden states to Fred to go look at the tomb of Dr. Markesan in the family graveyard. He himself was at the funeral.

Meanwhile Molly goes to look for herself and is cornered by Dr.Markesan and his three "guests". All very dead!

Fred faces his uncle who claims that he has defeated death. That he was now life eternal and could raise himself up from the dead at anytime. He also was not letting his three enemies who were the cause of his dismissal from the college have any peace.

Fred tell his Uncle that he is absolutely mad. At that time one of the three dead professors gets up in his coffin and falls sidways causing the main lamp in the laboratory to crash on Dr. Markesan.

Fred looks for Molly and as he opens a door he sees her sitting up in a coffin, very dead and grotestesque looking. Pulling the lid down as she lays back, Fred is terrified and shocked screaming Molly! No ! No No! No!

This to me was the best episode in the series.

I had three couples over to watch some movies and this episode of Thriller was shown at the end of the screening. My girlfriend and one couple loved it. However one of my friend's girlfriend got very upset !

This is a TV program from the early 1960's . It packed quite a punch for the time period since TV was a lot more limited on what it could show as verses the movies.

If you ever get a change to see this episode, please do. It is a great addition to the horror films and the supernatural lfilmography.

Actually the entire series of Thriller was great if you ignore the mystery episodes and concentrate on the supernatural ones.
