Hi!

Let me get seated in my old creaky rocking chair here.

Dress straightened, shawl on, pipe in hand and glass of claret nearby. All ready!

Val Lewton produced several classic horror type movies in the 1940's, probably the most famous being The Cat People.

However in 1943 Lewton produced a very atmospheric little horror film which was called "I Walked With A Zombie."

Don't let the crazy name fool you. It is an excellent movie in spite of it's title.
It is set in the Carribbean on an island called St. Sebastian. The story concerns a nurse who comes to treat zombie like wife of a local citizen. During the movie it is shown local rituals and legends that cannot be ignored.

It is a rich, atmospheric and mesmerizing story. Nothing is as it appears to be. This is where horror always lurks beneath the calm.

The most chilling part of the movie is the walk with the nurse and the zombie like woman through the moonlite cane fields on route to the Houmfort, where the voodoo rituals are carried on.

The movies stars Tom Conway, Frances Zee, James Ellison and Edith Barrett,

The movie is currently available on DVD both as a single or as a part of a set called The Val Lewton Collection.

Mr. Lewton's films were "B" movies but extremely well done and very atmospheric.

If you have not seen any of his movies, then I would recommend buying the set which contains nine of Lewton's movies as well as a biography of Mr. Lewton himself.

The movies contained in the set are:

The Cat People
The Curse Of The Cat People
The 7th Victim
The Leopard Man
The Ghost Ship
Isle Of The Dead ( with Boris Karloff)
Bedlam ( with Boris Karloff)
The Body Snatcher (with Karloff & Lugosi)
I Walked With A Zombie
Shadows In The Dark: A biography of Val Lewton.

If you like atmospheric and well done horror movies, then you need make an investment in the above Val Lewton Collection.

Well, I must be going now. Need to check out the wolf bane around the house.

Yes, an excellent movie. Loved it as a kid- especially the jungle locale and the voodoo rituals.

Thank you for these blurbs, Marya. I hope people newer to the classic horror genre read these and use them to help start their collections. Each of these sets is the cost of a couple special edition DVDs of things, but are still affordable. Forty bucks can get you several hardcore classics or two polished torture horror movies. Classic horror is finally being packaged in a viable way for smart consumers to collect it.
