Ok, since everyone here feels the same as I do about horror, I just want some opinions from ya. I live in Austin Texas, and me and a group of buddies are about to open an all horror themed cafe and shop. the cafe itself will have really good food, italian, burgers, bbq, pizza, etc. while our customers are eating and drinking, we will be projecting horror movies of my choice for free. we will have a bar with beer and wine, and we will be also brewing our own beer. the staff will be fully horrored out, b movie victim waiters and waitresses, and a zombie host. i do special make up effects on the side. our store will have dvds, posters, clothing, basically everything on this website and more. absolutely everything about this place will be horror. we are planning on the opening to be around october of 2008. now, i was just wondering what you guys think about this idea, if you were in the area, would you come to this place?

I would definitely check it out if I lived in the area, sounds like a good idea. Not sure if enough people in your area would agree though.....but sounds like fun....:)
About fifteen years ago while I was in N.Y. , I went to a just such a place. Its called Jekyll & Hyde.......very cool.

yeah, that was the main concern, the amount of people that would be interested, but in austin, there is a big demand for off the wall crazy movies. has anyone heard of the alamo drafthouse? its very popular locally, they have a terror tuesday where they show a free horror movie, and its packed every time. especially with ut here, im hoping there will be enough interest to keep us going. we plan to constantly have something going on to keep people coming in, whether it be drink and food specials to film festivals, just keep it interesting. during our working hours, we would show 3 full length movies, one being late seeing as we will be open until about midnight to 4am on the weekends. the rest of the time, i was gonna show trailers, episodes of various shows, etc. so it shouldnt be so bad with people sitting around, and if they do, we have a full bar. it is a risk, but to succeed, you gotta do it. plus, i have to be surrounded by horror, it just wouldnt feel right if i wasnt. thanks for the comments, they are greatly appreciated. will keep yall updated!

Both Jekyll & Hyde and The Slaughtered Lamb in NYC have succeeded, so there's a market and Austin is a great weird town, but I'd keep the gore on the servers and the screen to a minimum, at least during the lunch ad dinner hours...you need people to be able to eat in order to make money in the restaurant biz.
And with the Alamo Drafthouse closing soon:( there will be a void in the market...although I believe Harry Knowles has a plan up his sleeve to revive the drafthouse at a new location.
Good idea.

sounds good, but i'd ask a different demographic. let's face it, everyone here'll love it. do your market research in the city you are planning to open in. good luck with the business!

well, there is most definitely a target market for this in austin. HOLY SHIT, i had no idea the downtown drafthouse was closing, but they are opening a new one right on 6th st. the crowd in austin loves this kind of shit, and there really isnt that much of it around. i have some other friends going to other forums that have nothing to do with horror asking opinions also, i just wanted to know how my fellow horror freaks felt about it. we are about to get our loan money hopefully in a couple of weeks, than it shall begin, will keep everyone updated.

We have such a cafe near our hometown too. It plays rare vintage horror films from the 40s-50s era and also the odd Hammer Horror thrown in. The atmosphere is stupendous for such a place.
I really think this would be a great idea if implemented correctly. This could be one way of bringing back the masses and letting them into vintage horror.
I remember seeing pics of a cafe or restaurant in Europe which has employed H. R. Giger's works into its decorations and furniture. The entire furnishings and the inner look is totally Giger-ish. It was in a magazine not too long ago, but unfortunately I dont seem to recall it right now. Maybe one of you knows about it.
Such places bring the style of horror to the common man. Hopefully this may be the start of a new trend.

we are for sure going to use old vintage movies like that, especially the classics, and i love the hammer stuff, but my main interest, as well as the interest of the public in austin, is leaning more towards 70's-90's horror. although, i want to show mostly old stuff during the day since there is little to no gore, and show the more crazy stuff later. we plan on making sure the atmosphere in there is completely horror, there wont be a blank spot on any wall. plus, the zombies and other characters we will have walking around will help with that.

ok, i need yalls help. we were originally going to call it the crypt cafe, but i found out there is a place with that name already. so, for now, we are going with the nice and simple cafe of horrors, but i cant help but feel the name could be better. i like the cafe of horrors, very straight forward, but i need some help from some horror fanatics.

I prefer "Horror Cafe" over "Cafe of Horrors" but you can be more creative than that. A few goofy suggestions:
Necropolis
Gran Guignol Grill
The Laboratory
Bedlam Bar and Grill
Scream Cafe
Igor's
And I really like the English Pub Style :
The Burned Witch
The Stake and Chainsaw (great wooden signage potential!)
The wife thinks it's funnier as " The Steak and Chainsaw"
Hack and Slash
The Silver Bullet
I'll come up with more, these are just the first one I though of
Whatever it is, you need a simple, graphic logo that you can put on t-shirts and pint glasses and shit like that. You'll make more money merchandising your name and idea than through liquor and food sales:)

hey, i really like the hack and slash cafe idea, could have lots of fun with that, and i was diggin the silver bullet idea, i was gonna have a 6'5" or so werewolf display inside anyways, like those stuffed bears in hunting shops, so the silver bullet would be cool. im also really diggin the stake and chainsaw, but i think i like hack and slash a lot, hmmmmmmmmmmm.

06-16-2007, 05:43 PM
some others i have thought about....
chainsaw cafe
the severed limb
necronomicon cafe
cafe of the dead
sleepaway cafe
xombi cafe
the rotting corpse (dont think anyone would eat here...)
we still keep coming back to the cafe of horrors, but we have plenty of time to find the perfect name.
hmmm.....you seem to want "cafe" in the name
how about "The Passaway Cafe"........"eat fine food and then we will fucking kill ya"
no..........maybe......"Cafe of Death"......."if our food don't kill you, the bill will"
oooooo.....wait......"Cafe of Blood"......."eat, drink and DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH YA FUCKING MAGGOT"
....maybe a bit too strong........I'm still thinking

I think it is a good idea, and if I were gonna do it, I would decorate the place with nostalgic images--stay away from modern horror, theme it with antiquated classics (everything pre-1980) and some high-end cheeseball. Same with the movies, I would pick movies with maybe a sense of eloquence and sophistication. Draw in sophisticate wannabes with that sort of spin...think coffeehouse, art house...feature special music mixes on the sound system with dialogue clips from movies. I would go if it had a suitably pretentious atmosphere!

Here, here!
One of the coolest things in the restaurant biz is having regulars. My favorite way to keep regulars is to offer special beer mugs with the customer's name (or other personalization) on them...that the customer buys, but stays at the restaurant. That way the regular gets "his own glass" every time and feels he is being treated special and you hold an object that draws the person back again and again.
With a horror cafe the specialty mug could be a skull or a goblet or any number of Gothic vessels.

I definitely love the classics, but my main idea was to have this place be more of a modern horror theme, I feel like the folks in austin would rather watch some old 70's or 80's flicks than anything. the decor of the whole place will be more modern as well, but there will be certain areas dedicated for the classics. there will be a lot of decorations that i myself will make, like life sized werewolves, zombies, and other fun stuff. there will be tons of movies posters everywhere, im just obsessed with the stuff made between 70's and 90's.

How about a slight modification of one of the suggestions, just "Cafe Blood"--sounds chic, trendy, a little edgy.
Or "The Crimson Cafe"?

yeah, i like cafe blood, that could be really cool. oh, and by the way, anyone from this forum will most definitely get discounts if you come by, and good ones too. but, that being said, you gotta wait a year or so, but i swear i wont forget, ill give a secret HDC passcode or something. but i will for sure show my fellow horror fans some love.

ok, there have been numerous people trying to figure out what in the hell to call this place. we decided to drop the word cafe from the title since we are a lot more than that, and it just sounds a little cheesy. soooo, we have decided to go with simply "THE CRYPT", thoughts???

You have to make it clear that it's a place that you eat. Crypt could imply anything.

yeah, that was our original beef with it, we dont know if it will turn people off because of the word blood in the title, but i dont really think the austin crowd is as sensitive as most. we are still throwing some names around, but we are all really liking this one right now. i just dont find the word blood that unsettling, yeah, if it was the bloody disected fetus cafe, that would be different, but im not sure if the bloodshed is that bad, it is an all horror place.

It's simple and it's easy to remember. And it's quite tasteful as well.

yeah, i like it too, i just started not liking having the word cafe in the title, especially since the more we go along with this idea, it keeps evolving. its way more than a cafe now, so i was trying to give it a name that would basically say, in less words, "one stop horror place"
