Night Watch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403358/) is biggest thing to hit Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union and the biggest grossing movie there of all time. With it's sequel, Day Watch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409904/) opening tomorrow (in NY/LA), it is really something to go see.

Night Watch is a dark action/fantasy about good vs. evil. In addition to humans, there are creatures called "Others" who have special powers. Some of them are shapeshifters or vampires, can see the future, and more. There used to be a war between the "Light Others (the good)" and the "Dark Others (the bad)", but there was a truce called between the two sides. Now the "Night Watch" polices the Dark Others the "Day Watch" polices the Light others to not break the truce.

This movie is visually stunning, very stylish, with impressive FX considering it's meager $6 million budget. Though I'm sure a little goes a long way in Russia these days. Night Watch is currently on DVD and I suggest checking it out before seeing Day Watch, which will hopefully come to a theatre near you.

For once I agree with Swiss Miss Tony. They may have done alot with $6M but if the movie is still crap, isn't that just $6M wasted? It was visually interesting, but it always felt silly and fake to me... And I do agree that it started out good, but tanked at the frying pan clap...

I actually liked it, it was pretty unique visually. It was confusing and muddled at times, and was a bit disjointed, but overall, I thought it was a solid, interesting film.

I'm with the naysayers here. I tried a few times, and it seemed like an art piece more than a decent story. I was really disappointed, actually.

Wow, I didn't realize that this was such an either "you'll love it or hate it" type of movie.

Regardless of whether you like it or not, I think this is a big step for Russian Cinema. Early Russian Cinema had some of the top films of the world at that time, including Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. It really seems that they are trying to pick up where they left off since the fall of the Soviet Union and hopefully we will be seeing more out of Russia soon.

Only joking of course! I like your posts Tony, your top-ten is just a little goofy to me. But original and diverse, so more power to you...

Couldn't really get into NIGHTWATCH, it was ok I guess, my girlfriend read the book, and she says it's better and makes more sense.
