Seeking title to obscure Italian (?) horror film from the early sixties, or perhaps late fifties.

The story, as best
as I can remember it, some people were ship wrecked on an island and on the
island were all these big Easter Island like statues. At night, the statues
got up and chased the people. One bit of dialog has always stuck with me.
When the hero and his girl come across one of the members of the party that
was killed by the statues, the hero says, "it crushed his head like a rotten
grape." I don't remember seeing the body of the dead guy, but I remember
that phrase. The ending, the hero and the girl floated away on a log and
the monster statues melted in the water as they tried to get at the hero and
the girl.

It just bugs me to not know the title...and I'd love to find a copy of the movie once I know the name.

Hell if I know. The closest I can come up with is Jason and the Argonauts - in which the statue of the god Talos comes to life or the Japanese classic Daimajin about a totemic statue that comes to life to defend a village from a vicious warlord.

It could be Attack of the Beast Creatures (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088752/) or Shock Waves (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076704/) or Screamers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081467/).

This one does have me stumped, and apparently everyone else too. The guesses so far aren't even close.

The CLUES: 1. The movie was from the late fifties or early sixites...NOT the seventies or eighties. Saw the movie as a drive-in double feature -- along with Giant Behemoth -- back that far. Unless it was also a time machine, it was long before those other movies.

2. Easter Island-like statues coming to life. That's a pretty specific image; one either remembers it or no. And the statues melting in water chasing the stars is pretty specific as well.

Here's hoping someone out there may have seen this movie, or reference to it, and can help.

I'm no help here, but it sounds interesting. Also I'd like to see Attack of the Beast Creatures but Netflix doesn't carry it...
