Gay Bar Wins Right To Ban Heterosexuals

Australia - A Melbourne gay bar has been granted an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act in a landmark ruling which will allow security to refuse entry to heterosexuals.

The owners of Collingwood's Peel Hotel, which came under fire in April for promoting a gay Anzac Day party, successfully argued to the state planning tribunal that banning heterosexuals from the club would prevent "sexually based insults and violence".

VCAT deputy president Cate McKenzie claimed that allowing straight men and women into the club would defeat the purpose of the venue.

"This would undermine or destroy the atmosphere which the company wishes to create," McKenzie said.

"Sometimes heterosexual groups and lesbian groups insult and deride and are even physically violent towards the gay male patrons."

McKenzie said some straight women came to the club because they found the gay patrons entertaining.

"To regard the gay male patrons of the venue as providing an entertainment or spectacle to be stared at, as one would at an animal at a zoo, devalues and dehumanises them," she said.

"This exemption seeks to give gay men a space in which they may, without inhibition, meet, socialise and express physical attraction to each other in a non-threatening atmosphere."

A spokeswoman for the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Lobby Group told the Herald Sun that gay men at the Peel had been made to feel like "zoo animals".

"This exemption was not sought to exclude members of the community but to try to maintain a safe space for men to meet," the spokeswoman said.

"It's sad that members of our community would have to go to the VCAT to preserve their rights.

"This is one of the only free venues with live music in the area, so certainly some people may feel a bit unhappy about the decision."

If ANY bar...Or any PLACE decided to refuse to allow homosexual patrons to enter, could you IMAGINE the lawsuits?

Why don't they just eject or ban the individual people who are causing problems?...That's what all other establishments do

They are basically saying that ALL straight people will harass the regular patrons and cause a threat to them...Prejudice much?

The irony is...This type of discrimination is EXACTLY what most homosexual people complain about

One person's rights end, where another person's rights begin...

Exactly..
I am sick to death of gay right issues being shoved down my throat..'scuse the pun'..then being called homophobic for voicing my opinion.
Em not going to sit here and defend myself by stating something as lame as
;BUT SOME OF MY BESTFRIENDS ARE GAY'..

If your gay ..fuck good on you..
if you want to parade yourself publicly dressed in clown suits..wearing next to nothing ..in what you call 'the hero parade'..and gay right marches.
fuck..good on you.
Why should I be told that i have to stand and applaud you because you are telling the world..you like taking it up the ass..!!?????????

'sheesh'

A few of us were refused entry to this bar..the last time i was over there.
fucken ridiculous.

I mean seriously...Think about this

To exclude someone from something because of their sexual preference...Isn't that what gay rights is ALL about fighting against?...But, it's okay for THEM to do it?

That is the *exact* crux of it - in any discrimination situation.

We live in a society now where we live under the illusion of democracy. Freedom of speech is welcome as long as you dont dare to speak up about the injustice aimed at the *majority*.

What I do not understand is, many, many people are perfectly aware of the injustices aimed at them in that we darent speak up if we feel that something is unfair - we procrastinate or sit at home in silence, when we should be making a bloody furore about it all.

Alot of people are on the bandwagon of "dont you dare pick on me or I will sue you". Because it has been allowed. Police, local authorities, everyone, is scared to stand up and say that although we agree with equal rights, that some demands are completely unreasonable and unfair.

We fear saying that something is wrong for fear of reprisal or accused of discrimination. Everything is on its arse!

A friend of mine works in a local university. They had a national *Black history* day. The friend suggested a *British white history* day and was told if a comment like that is made again, he will be instantly dismissed!

When are people going to make a stand?

Yeah..that happens here too..
I hear my family and friends get called honky's..rednecks..etc..
but they retaliate and watch out..
however..when i call a spade a spade..em looked on as being a smartass
but not offensive as my skin colour is brown.
There is nothing wrong with anybody demanding equal rights..but why classify
it as just one class..
gay rights
womans rights
black rights..
what ever happened with just
human rights..
Personally ..i would be more tolerant if they simply said 'hey ..we have rights too..etc..'but to publicly display their sexual preferences...which to me should be kept behind locked doors..whether they be gay or hetrosexual..
