i use a website to order my dvds. it isn't my first choice site so i don't use too often but when i have done i've been slightly suspicious. the wrapping seems amateurish, some of the inlay covers are a little blurred and the covers don't have a certificate on them. also, the dvds themselves don't seem authentic. the images are again, not clear. am i being over zealous? do some companies produce slightly poorer boxes. i have to be honest and say that about half are obviously legit. has this happened to any of you? thanks guys

Chances are you probably did get bootlegs, it happens
Whether you were ripped off or not depends on your perception...
Were these DVDs unobtainable any other way?...Were they shows/movies that were never released on DVD?...Did you pay a fair price?
Basically, if you feel that you got what you paid for, and that it was worth it...You may have gotten bootlegged copies, but you didn't get ripped off
On the other hand...If the product was NOT worth the price you paid...Or if it was advertised as 'NOT bootleg'...Then yeah, you pretty much got ripped off

Sounds like you are getting bootlegs. Happened to me on e-bay.....ordered "new copy" of "CREEP" and received a bootleg. Sure it had decent artwork but the last 5 minutes refused to play on all of my DVD players....had to watch it on the computer.....eh.....live & learn.

I bought a bootleg of something from someone on Ebay to. I cant rember what movie it was but the picture they had was one of those pictures of movie covers you see on diffrent websites.
When it got here the cover smeared and it looked like it was filmed with a home video camera.
That was a few years ago, I still email the guy every once in a while an curse him when I get boared.

i watched ginger snaps last night and the quality was okay. the options were 'view trailer' and 'play movie', there was no extras. maybe these are former rentals. the prices i paid were slightly cheaper than play.com so they cost enough to expect originals. some of them had the chapter number cards in the box and some had the carboard sleeve so i think they have to be original. should dvds have their certificate stamped on the cover (18, 15, U, etc.)? the reason i bought from them was that the 10 dvd's plus shipping were a little cheaper, in paticular kwaidan and onibaba. i suppose i enjoyed ginger snaps as much as possible, wether it was pirate or original. you just wanna make sure you're getting what you are paying for. maybe its time to visit amazon. let me know your verdict based on this further info. thanks

DOUBT alone is enough to make an executive decision here. You *know* deep down that things arent quite right and, as you say, "...the prices i paid were slightly cheaper than play.com so they cost enough to expect originals." So go to a company that you know will send you authentic cd's/dvd's.
Amazon isnt always that cheap but their service is second to none (my personal opinion, having used them for many years now) and play.com is pretty good too!
Here's to making executive decisions! :D

looks like i'll stick to play and amazon. i'd still be interested in hearing your opinions.

My opinion - if I received a cd/dvd and it's cover didnt seem authentic (like a slightly crude copy) I would be pissed off. If the actualy cd or dvd played okay but had features missing, that you know would be found on an authentic cd/dvd then I would be pissed off and would feel that there is a possibility that I have received a bootleg.
Now, if the price is real cheap and I am happy with the quality of the music/film playback that is all well and good BUT if I am not told they are bootlegs and was expecting the real thing, then I would be pissed off and would definitely not buy from them again.
It depends on what you gut feeling says...... and how happy you are with the result gut feeling. Are you happy about it or not? That is where the decision lies.

i liked the movies fine. some are definitely originals some aren't definitely originals. i've watched 1 out of 10 received this time round so i'll have plenty of time to decide. on reflection, its only the american movies that appear bogus. the asian movies are seemingly okay. yeah, i'll go elsewhere. better safe than sorry

I am surprized to hear it was dvduniverse. They are a legitimate company. I'm actually an affiliate. They get product from a lot of suppliers sothey might not even know the dvds they shipped were not right. I'm willing to bet that if you emailed them and said you'd like to return them and why, they'd be more than happy to.

yeah i know. i took it in good spirit. i think, based on the endorsement of neverending, that they are fine but they are the most basic versions of the release. i suppose it depends on where the co. source their stock. sometimes you get basic sometimes you get directors cut limited edition unseen uncut super duper edition. on the advice of others on this thread i ordered my next 3 movies from amazon this morning. so, if their quality is superior i'll switch allegiances. does anyone know if there are sites out there selling top quality replicas?

rarely do you sumble upon bootlegs on amazon, and when there is one someone will always review the item and state so.

READ THE GODDAMN THREAD, WONT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Actually, its inconclusive because we can only go by what info swisstony has given us.
The only way I could assist his concerns about what he is purchasing is to get him to ask himself if he *feels* some of the merchandise is bootlegged. Other than that, dont know!!!!

just received the departed from amazon. it only took 2 days to get here. thats the quickest yet. looks like i'm gonna stick with amazon for a while. i think the conclusions to be drawn from this thread and the experiences that prompted it are that if you have any doubts about the quality of the products you are purchasing there are too many rival companies to not shop around until you are happy. i'll make a note of the other two dvd sites manchester. at least the thread will serve to highlight the fact that cduniverse.com may not be the place to purchase top quality.
