Landlord Discovers 2 Bodies

CAUSE UNCERTAIN: Couple was found in front of TV; Cat had food provided.

Anchorage, Alaska - Authorities late Thursday night were investigating the deaths of a man and a woman whose bodies were found on a couch in a West 25th Avenue apartment just off Minnesota Drive, Anchorage police said.

Police said the couple, who might have been dead for weeks, were found sitting on a couch in front of a television that was still playing. Investigators had not determined a cause of death by late Thursday.

Anchorage Police Department spokesman Lt. Paul Honeman described the condition of the bodies as "very decomposed." A cat found in the apartment appeared to be fine; cat food was available from open bags, said Officer Ross Heinikman.

Heinikman said there were no signs of violence in the one-bedroom apartment.

The man and woman were found in Apartment 107 on the bottom floor of a three-level building in the 1400 block of West 25th Avenue. The building, with a sign above a main entrance saying Arbor Pointe, holds about 30 units.

Honeman said a substantial quantity of prescription medicines was found in the home.

Neighbors said they had been noticing a foul odor spreading around the building for up to three weeks.

Neighbor Tom Lowther said he suspected the odor was a decomposing body, but the apartment's "TV was on one day, but then completely off the next," leading him to believe somebody was home.

Honeman said the landlord several times left notes on the door of the dead couple's residence pressing them to clean up their apartment or do something about the smell. He said the landlord on Thursday evening managed to open one of the apartment's windows, pushed aside the blinds and saw a body.

Representatives from the medical examiner's office, wearing masks and rubber gloves, carried out one body about 8:30 p.m. About 20 minutes later, they carried out the other.

Neighbors described the couple, who police said appeared to be in their 40s, as a quiet pair who kept to themselves.
