There suspiciously does not seem to be a straight answer forthcoming in the other threads, so let us ask here:-

Is omcdave banned? If so, on what grounds?

Furthermore, it appears some if not all of his posts have been removed from the forum entirely.

What is the justification for this?

I don't believe this member - unlike some others - was intentionally rude, pornographic or an aggressive troublemaker. He wasn't even sarcastic.

It is generally agreed that some of his posts might have been silly, but then the same goes for many other - unbanned - members of horror.com. Far more offensive and banal entries have been allowed to stay on the forum, and their posters go unchecked.

Is the establishment executing its right to remove (all trace of) any member it deems 'unsuitable' using some dubious excuse of his 'excessive posting' or typing 'not what people want to read'?

If this is the case, it is extremely disappointing from a community which has been known to boast about its diversity, tolerance and broad mindedness when it comes to discussing horror and other subjects.

If this is the case, it is extremely disappointing from a community which has been known to boast about its diversity, tolerance and broad mindedness when it comes to discussing horror and other subjects.

I believe more than one complaint was made against him for some of the stuff he had been doing on here and behind the scenes. Also, he and his cohorts have been filling this place with total nonsense since they joined. Till November-December last year, he wasnt posting anywhere else except the General Forum, not to mention opening countless threads of idiocy and filling other threads with stupidity.

When pointed that he wasnt posting anything related to "contribution to horror" by The Flayed One, he started frequenting the Asian movies and Modern movies sections and added some information about Asian stuff. Knowing the fascination us movie-goers have for asian movies these days (since Hollywood has gone drastically down in the Horror genre) he was lauded for it, but actually most of his recommendations were lifted from sites such as upcominghorrormovies.com and hkflix.com et al. (How do I know about it? His posts regarding a particular movie matched the reviews in those sites by other people) I doubt the guy himself took any time out to watch the movies he actually posted about.

And lately he has been doing some stuff which went beyond the transgression of the mods. I am sure if they removed him they had enough evidence and complaints lodged against him, and in subsequent investigations, they found a lot of proof to back those complaints.

Maybe if BR or Zwoti or whoever did the banning clears it up, then everyone would believe it. I am just voicing my thoughts as to what might have happened.

And I applaud the mods for being so tolerant of the fellow and giving him more than one chance to be a good standing and contributing member. Many other excellent members protested and left in disgust, but the mods still let him stay.

It was a severe loss to the forum when so many good contributing members left in protest because their complaints against him werent being heeded upon. Its a classic case of one apple spoiling the whole barrel. I doubt if we will ever get those good members back again.

I'm sorry I've been working 12+ hour days and haven't had a chance to post before this. Dave and company are some strange and scary people who were harassing and freaking out female members. When I came in here brand new and knew absolutely nothing about what was going on and who was who, Dave was very welcoming. I also got them from Trippin, who seemed another very nice and welcoming member. It seemed he doth protest too much about how he was the glue who held this site together, but I honestly thought he and a couple of his cohorts were like that loud, drunk aunt at the wedding who embarasses and annoys everyone, but are basically harmless.

As I was on the site more and more, I noticed that they were simply stirring crap with every member they could. Any, and I do mean ANY, topic was cause for a meeting of the minds with this crew to see how they could agitate. The Yahoo messenger burned alot of bandwidth for them to come up with ways to harass and irritate anyone and everyone, but especially the mods and the people who had been here any length of time. That was their point for being here. Nothing else. It was all about irritating people they felt had wronged them. They would hop on new people after the first post and try to get you to defend them and what wonderful, wronged people they were.

I made the mistake of getting into yahoo with Dave one night when he said he wanted to talk to me about something. He started a multi-chat, pulling in several cohorts whom I had not spoken to on or off the boards. One member activated his webcam on which he, pretty regularly, shows his penis. I was not the first invitee to this little show. Apparently several underage girls who frequented the site had also been invited at one time or another prompting the "why being a pervert pedophile is okay" speech. I believe there were warnings, etc. at that point, to which they took great umbrage. Well, if a 14 year old girl wants to look at a 30-some year old man jerking off, why should HDC care that that's where they were targeted...prudes!! They were pictures of men....err...at the completion stage of....pleasuring themselves being sent around. I declined and logged...fast and left them with the thought that if they sent me a picture of that nature, they had better keep a copy because after what I would do to their testicles, they would need it to remember when their plumbing functioned.

Of course this was followed up with a post on the boards about how much he enjoyed our conversation, then 4 or so p.m.s about how he sincerely hoped I wasn't offended. They are just open minded and a little wierd and like to talk about sex. Since then I haven't been on this site because, frankly, with this bunch of freaks and perverts I figured I would just go gently into that goodnight and say the hell with this place. I mean, between the boards being loaded with them posting the most inane drivel on purpose just to try and ruin the board, what's the use of fighting the uphill battle.

For those that defend Dave and think his posting idiocy is not bannable, think again. How many people who would be good, fun, knowlegeable contributors to this site never even bother to register because a quick trip through the boards is nothing but vapid drivel and constant conversation about why certain people shouldn't get banned? The only reason I made it that far was that it honestly seemed to me that this was not approved of, in general. Do you think that people posting endlessly about how they want to be banned and how they are just assholes, they can't help themselves and they will do it again, is really a good way to attract people you'd ever want to talk to?

In addition, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has been invited to these little parties from here, then harassed here for saying, okay you sick freaks, if you all want to sit around all night and look at each other's schlongs, have a ball, but leave me out of it. I'm pretty sure the mods have a long list. Especially since I didn't even contact the mods.

Censorship sounds very scary and Orwellian and everyone goes into apoplexy about how they are being repressed. What's worse is when you have a small number of people, most who have been banned before (and are exploiting the lack of an ISP block) come back under another name to create trouble and basically kill the board to settle old scores. They were already banned and came right out and said I'm back under another name to cause trouble. Banning is the only possible option.

As for Dave and everyone being against him because he's Korean and can't spell..err...Dave has been in the states his whole life. He graduated from school here and he lives in California. He's just illiterate. I'm sorry, if you can't sing, don't stand up at karaoke and if you can't spell or type coherent sentences, stay off of boards where coherent writing is a prerequisite!!

Exactly. That's why I posted this. I mean, I'm an idiot for ever having talked to them. I'm a grown woman and dealt with it. The mods, however, can't come out and say alot of things that I'm sure have been reported to them because they are protecting the people who have had to deal with this junk. They have to protect people from this crap without divulging the details. It's unfair and insulting for people to run around second guessing their actions when they have ZERO information on the majority of what's going on. Yours is the responsibility to keep this place functioning reasonably well. If we don't like it, we can leave. Ban whoever you want for whatever reason, and feel no need to explain yourself or grant due process. Those who can't stay on topic (i.e., horror) here can always find a more general forum on which to discuss whatever they want.

Well... alarming stuff to say the least.

You of course have to be careful of directing words like paedophile around the internet because of slander and defamation. It was a little unclear from AsylumSeeker's post the level of Dave's involvement in any unappropriate behaviour with minors, but I think it's fair to say that with his alleged harassment PMs and apparently dubious agendas for 'chatting' that he had become a prominent but increasingly undesirable member of this forum. He used to PM me a lot as well, but nothing sexual... honest. :D

It took a lot for you to come forward with this, Asylum, and I am truly appreciative of you informing the others about exactly what happened. If its of any consolation you werent the only 1 who was affected by that group. Next time if any of this happens, I urge you and others like you, to come forward and report it to the Mods. In BR and Zwoti we got 2 of the best...not only mods but like older members of the family who will listen to you and will take action. I hope Asylum's post is an eye-opener for all the affected others, and for the Dave & his cohorts supporters too.

We lot here at HDC are a great community, and some of the older members who have left are some of the best informed critics of the horror genre you would find anywhere in the world, much less on the Net. I have come to learn a lot from em and I miss their inputs now.

But still we have a core group which are very informative about anything and everything. Sure we do have our goofy and angry moments, but still we lot have stuck together through shitstorms like this before. Like we have survived this ordeal, we have survived others before this.

It took a lot for you to come forward with this, Asylum, and I am truly appreciative of you informing the others about exactly what happened. If its of any consolation you werent the only 1 who was affected by that group. Next time if any of this happens, I urge you and others like you, to come forward and report it to the Mods. In BR and Zwoti we got 2 of the best...not only mods but like older members of the family who will listen to you and will take action. I hope Asylum's post is an eye-opener for all the affected others, and for the Dave & his cohorts supporters too.

We lot here at HDC are a great community, and some of the older members who have left are some of the best informed critics of the horror genre you would find anywhere in the world, much less on the Net. I have come to learn a lot from em and I miss their inputs now.

But still we have a core group which are very informative about anything and everything. Sure we do have our goofy and angry moments, but still we lot stick together through a lot. Like we have survived this ordeal, we have survived others before this.

i just logged on after about a couple of weeks of relative inactivity on this site to find this thread. HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!! absolutely appalling stuff. for the record, dave PMed me about horror, asian in particular, and was incredibly friendly and welcoming from day one and never behaved in an inappropriate manner. but then, i'm not a teenage girl. on dave's HDC friends thread he started recently he refered to me as someone he liked and i don't think i took the time to respond, thankfully. i hope no one, particularlyBR and zwoti, lumps me in with that crowd. i had no idea. i just thought he was a talkative fella with too much time on his hands but...HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!

I'd like to thank Asylum for coming forward and sharing her experience and letting us all know part of what was really going on. I'd also like to share a conversation that I had with Tripp a few months back and that I think his behavior then relates to what was going on.

When I was new here he had PMed my me about my user name and had invited me to talk with him on yahoo messenger about movies. So I did and the conversation went quickly to flirting with me and sending me pictures of himself (just his face, nothing sexual) and wanting to see pics of me.

Well I told him I had nothing to send him so he asked me if I had a boyfriend and I said yes. I asked if he had a girlfriend and he said no, not really. I told him that that was usually a yes or no question and he said he sort of had a loose long distance relationship. I asked if she was in the military or something and he said no that she lived in Indiana and was 20 and a virgin and that they were engaged to be married and he was totally in love with this girl! If you had a fiancee they are usually not referred to as a loose long distance relationship in the very last preceding line in the IM.

Needless to say the conversation ended after that, which was my first and last with him. Now this conversation doesn't seem to completely cross the line, but after hearing why these people got banned, I can see where this conversation could have quickly gone and follows in line with that type of behavior. I just thought you all might want to know.

Actually a horror forum is the perfect place, just for the reason you think it is not. Last place you suspect a sexual predator would be here. But we do have our share of female members, and Dave was good at sniffing them out. The best predators are the ones who find unlikely places to attack.

I mod a rp forum, where we have many younger members, probably over half active members are under 18. We have had multiple encounters with freaks coming trying to do naughty things with kiddies. Honestly, no where on the net is safe.

As for the witch hunt, this place is very standoffish with newbies, but besids a few bumps, I really havent had much of an issue with the old timers of this site.

This made for some mighty interesting reading. The Internet has been around for such a long time now one would think there would be stricter cyber-laws in force, and when such people are identified across websites and forums and boards, there should be a system of blocking their computers from Internet access.
The police had set up a sort of Cyber Cell a long time back, from what I had read in the newspapers, and nothing has been done ever since to do something about such culprits. Such people in real life would probably be dragged into litigations in courts by now, but because this is the Internet, they get away with it.
Banning them from this forum would save this one, but when they joined another place, the women there are doomed. I just hope any of these mental cases dont carry their deranged thoughts into real life and actually hurt any women.
That being said, the moderators deserve a pat on the back for singling out these people and kicking them out. At least the younger generations who browse these forums will now feel safe knowing that someone is always watching over them.

I was one of the lucky ones - Dave was lovely to me, personally. He PM'd me with a welcome, nothing heavy or accusatory about others, just a plain ol' welcome.

We have PM'd occasionally since and he has let me into a tiny bit of his personal world and personal life worries on certain issues - and I have sympathised etc.. and cant blame him for worrying considering those issues - but they are private, so wont go into it, if you dont mind.

Humour wise, I guess people can take umbrage cos as we all know, humour perspective is relative to culture and/or where you live in general or how darkly you think!

For example, as soon as we have a natural disaster where thousands are wiped out in seconds, before ya know it, all those jokes go round (you know the ones I mean) - some people find them funny, some people find them in bad taste - its all about perspective.

Do we leave it to remind kids of the dangers on the internet, urge them to contact someone if they are approached in this way and to let any potential new predators know that they aren't welcome here?

I'm sorry I've been working 12+ hour days and haven't had a chance to post before this. Dave and company are some strange and scary people who were harassing and freaking out female members. When I came in here brand new and knew absolutely nothing about what was going on and who was who, Dave was very welcoming. I received tons of p.m.s welcoming me and encouraging me to visit "his" J horror board along with a lot telling me who the idiots and jerks were from the old group and how he and his friends were simply being abused for no good reason. I also got them from Trippin, who seemed another very nice and welcoming member. It seemed he doth protest too much about how he was the glue who held this site together, but I honestly thought he and a couple of his cohorts were like that loud, drunk aunt at the wedding who embarasses and annoys everyone, but are basically harmless.

As I was on the site more and more, I noticed that they were simply stirring crap with every member they could. Any, and I do mean ANY, topic was cause for a meeting of the minds with this crew to see how they could agitate. The Yahoo messenger burned alot of bandwidth for them to come up with ways to harass and irritate anyone and everyone, but especially the mods and the people who had been here any length of time. That was their point for being here. Nothing else. It was all about irritating people they felt had wronged them. They would hop on new people after the first post and try to get you to defend them and what wonderful, wronged people they were.

I made the mistake of getting into yahoo with Dave one night when he said he wanted to talk to me about something. He started a multi-chat, pulling in several cohorts whom I had not spoken to on or off the boards. One member activated his webcam on which he, pretty regularly, shows his penis. I was not the first invitee to this little show. Apparently several underage girls who frequented the site had also been invited at one time or another prompting the "why being a pervert pedophile is okay" speech. I believe there were warnings, etc. at that point, to which they took great umbrage. Well, if a 14 year old girl wants to look at a 30-some year old man jerking off, why should HDC care that that's where they were targeted...prudes!! They were pictures of men....err...at the completion stage of....pleasuring themselves being sent around. I declined and logged...fast and left them with the thought that if they sent me a picture of that nature, they had better keep a copy because after what I would do to their testicles, they would need it to remember when their plumbing functioned.

Of course this was followed up with a post on the boards about how much he enjoyed our conversation, then 4 or so p.m.s about how he sincerely hoped I wasn't offended. They are just open minded and a little wierd and like to talk about sex. Since then I haven't been on this site because, frankly, with this bunch of freaks and perverts I figured I would just go gently into that goodnight and say the hell with this place. I mean, between the boards being loaded with them posting the most inane drivel on purpose just to try and ruin the board, what's the use of fighting the uphill battle.

For those that defend Dave and think his posting idiocy is not bannable, think again. How many people who would be good, fun, knowlegeable contributors to this site never even bother to register because a quick trip through the boards is nothing but vapid drivel and constant conversation about why certain people shouldn't get banned? The only reason I made it that far was that it honestly seemed to me that this was not approved of, in general. Do you think that people posting endlessly about how they want to be banned and how they are just assholes, they can't help themselves and they will do it again, is really a good way to attract people you'd ever want to talk to?

In addition, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has been invited to these little parties from here, then harassed here for saying, okay you sick freaks, if you all want to sit around all night and look at each other's schlongs, have a ball, but leave me out of it. I'm pretty sure the mods have a long list. Especially since I didn't even contact the mods.

Censorship sounds very scary and Orwellian and everyone goes into apoplexy about how they are being repressed. What's worse is when you have a small number of people, most who have been banned before (and are exploiting the lack of an ISP block) come back under another name to create trouble and basically kill the board to settle old scores. They were already banned and came right out and said I'm back under another name to cause trouble. Banning is the only possible option.

As for Dave and everyone being against him because he's Korean and can't spell..err...Dave has been in the states his whole life. He graduated from school here and he lives in California. He's just illiterate. I'm sorry, if you can't sing, don't stand up at karaoke and if you can't spell or type coherent sentences, stay off of boards where coherent writing is a prerequisite!!

It was decided that if any additional 'warnings' were needed regarding acceptable behaviour at this forum, it would be added to the It Stops Now thread...Many of the members here are ready for this subject to be considered 'closed'

Oh, he's no criminal genius, thats for sure. He was just a stupid idiot who got off by talking dirty to the women/girl members in here. Obviously, Trippin was the more guilty of the two...

BUT...

Dave talking and agreeing to what Trippin told him to do, THEN asking women/girl members to join their chats on yahoo (obviously he knew what Trippin was up to on Yahoo) on the pretext of some harmless fun...THAT in my opinion is an equally unforgivable offence. He had convinced most of the female members in here, and they were more than willing to follow him to a yahoo conference...and he used that to his advantage. Especially because it involved not ONLY Asylum, but others who went through the same traumatic experience (some of them not even 18), and whose names I wont mention here.

Okay - as I tried to say in an earlier post but kafuffled me words!! - cant we have some kind of permanent notice - a warning for children who may frequent this forum. Us grown ups (mature people - not necessarily old fogeys!) do have a responsibility to protect people on here as was pretty obvious from the banning of *you know who*, etc..

The fear was, if we put up a warning it may scare people away - but we dont necessarily have to encourage the grassing up of potential abusers - just a permanent message like:

Shaz, there's no need of such a post in any sticky. People who register in here are good enough to figure out that this is the Net, and everything that happens is happening on the comp screen.

If you are still bad enough to be gullible and trust anyone on here before not satisfying yourself about their credentials, then thats YOUR fault, not that person's. That is exactly why people like Trippin and Dave flourish. Because people are EASY. "TOO" gullible.

Its strange that most people show this behaviour on here, while in real life they are very careful and too suspicious of everybody else.

I debated whether or not I should come in here and reply to this, and finally decided to.

I don't know if anyone remembers me too well, but at one time DJ and I were pretty close friends, or so I thought at the time. His approach to me was a bit different. For one thing, I didn't have IM, it was all through PMs. I was the first to PM him, because I had a question about a statement he made on the board. We talked everyday for months, and it was about REAL life stuff, or that's what I believed at the time. About his family, his work, etc.
By the end of our friendship, it had gotten pretty nasty; I knew he was a liar and a manipulator, I had no idea how sick he really is. I just kept catching him in lie after lie. When I finally cut off contact with him, he PMed another friend of mine trying to get information about me and asking why I wasn't speaking to him. I made the mistake of contacting him again, and being pulled into yet another sad story. Finally I washed my hands of him completely. This is pretty much the reason I stopped posting here. He seemed to have a lot of friends here at the time, so honestly I thought maybe it was just me that brought out his more charming side.....:rolleyes: And I was an adult, I was the one that allowed his manipulations to go on far too long. I was under this delusion that he was basically a decent guy, just a tad misguided. But I stopped coming here, because he made it a miserable place for me to be.

To hear this, I am sickened. I didn't realize how sick, and just all around messed up in the head this guy really is. And I am glad that I pulled myself away. It does make sense, and isn't exactly shocking I suppose, looking back. People really do need to show caution online, because you just never know. Like I said, I knew by the end of our friendship there was something off about the guy, but just being a jerk is different then.....this. I'm just glad the mods put a stop to this. :)

When I first joined HDC, trippin' was the first person to actually show interest in me. He was friendly and made me feel special (I know, fucking corny) and I grew to trust him. We had kind of a "fling" over the phone and IM, and yes I got sent the penis pictures, but I thought that was because we were kinda having the fling thing. I even almost went down to Florida to meet him (scary). At the time, my boyfriend and I were having a very difficult time so I fell for DJ's BS hook line and sinker. Then I started catching him in lies. I cancelled my trip to Florida. Then with the help of a friend I caught him in a really BIG lie. I called him and blew up and basically screamed at him over the phone. We made up after that and remained friends. My boyfriend and I ended up working things out and are still together (approx 11 years).

I do remember once when DJ said to me that if a 14 year old wanted to "give" herself to a 30 year old man, there was nothing wrong, she knows what she is doing. (He's 36 BTW) Given that at 14, I was very strong willed and a party girl (young and stupid is how I see it now, but that's history), I thought it was a bit weird, but didn't think much of it at the time. I had no idea that he was actually preying on 14 years olds. and sending his penis pictures to everyone he could. The whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach now.

I'm still surprised at omcdave. He never said anything inappropriate to me. But apparently I didn't know his whole story either. Or maybe he just got tangled up in trippin's web like some of us others have.

It's not easy "coming clean" when something like this happens to you, so please don't place the blame on us. That's almost like telling a rape victim it was their fault that it happened to others after them because they didn't have "the guts to come clean before". No one likes to believe that they fell into someone else's trap. And it's very easy to think "it was only me" until the story starts coming out that it happened to others.

Honestly, the reason I wouldn't have said anything, is I was under the mistaken belief this was a personal issue between DJ and myself. I didn't know that he was taking advantage of others or trying to, or I really would have stuck around to help push him out of here.

In the beginning, I trusted him too. He was a good friend, I thought and he made me feel good about myself as well. Apparently, I am not that great of a judge of character.

I debated whether or not I should come in here and reply to this, and finally decided to.

I don't know if anyone remembers me too well, but at one time DJ and I were pretty close friends, or so I thought at the time. His approach to me was a bit different. For one thing, I didn't have IM, it was all through PMs. I was the first to PM him, because I had a question about a statement he made on the board. We talked everyday for months, and it was about REAL life stuff, or that's what I believed at the time. About his family, his work, etc.
By the end of our friendship, it had gotten pretty nasty; I knew he was a liar and a manipulator, I had no idea how sick he really is. I just kept catching him in lie after lie. When I finally cut off contact with him, he PMed another friend of mine trying to get information about me and asking why I wasn't speaking to him. I made the mistake of contacting him again, and being pulled into yet another sad story. Finally I washed my hands of him completely. This is pretty much the reason I stopped posting here. He seemed to have a lot of friends here at the time, so honestly I thought maybe it was just me that brought out his more charming side.....:rolleyes: And I was an adult, I was the one that allowed his manipulations to go on far too long. I was under this delusion that he was basically a decent guy, just a tad misguided. But I stopped coming here, because he made it a miserable place for me to be.

To hear this, I am sickened. I didn't realize how sick, and just all around messed up in the head this guy really is. And I am glad that I pulled myself away. It does make sense, and isn't exactly shocking I suppose, looking back. People really do need to show caution online, because you just never know. Like I said, I knew by the end of our friendship there was something off about the guy, but just being a jerk is different then.....this. I can speak from experience that it happens everywhere. I help run another forum and we have a lot of teen members, and I do mean a lot. We have had issues of older men and women asking for pics of kids, of them nude, trying to get them into yahoo or on phone to talk sex. I created a teenager account just for the purpose of catching these pervs. We have been dealing with this issue 6 yrs at this forum and it is a non stop battle. Kill one sick perv, ten more replaces them

Hmmm, he told me that his exwife has custody of the daughter and he rarely gets to see her. He said she was either remarried or going to get married (can't remember which) to a guy she met in rehab and that her parents have money to fight him in court with so he has almost no hope of getting custody or even shared custody of her. It's all up to his ex when he can see her. I shudder to think there may be more to THAT story than what he said. I think I'm gonna go vomit now.

(12-07) 04:00 PDT SAN JOSE -- Daniel DePew and Dean Lambey's scheme was about as hellish as the minds of men can conceive: Kidnap a young boy, sexually abuse him and ultimately kill him during the making of a snuff film.

Police and FBI agents believe that the two would have carried out their scheme had it not been for several San Jose cops going undercover in cyberspace.

Detectives throughout the country are now seeing the need to focus on the Internet, where millions of young computer users are at risk of being terrorized by sexual predators each day.

Precise numbers are difficult to come by, but more and more pedophiles from around the globe are using the World Wide Web to prey on young, unsuspecting victims, investigators say. They troll chat rooms looking for naive victims. They use the Internet to exchange child pornography internationally.

And most recently, police say, they have discovered a frightening new use of technology. Pedophiles are using digital cameras to televise live, interactive molestations in cyberspace.

"The Internet is probably the best thing that ever happened to the sex trade,'' said Mike Niehoff, a high-technology crimes investigator for the San Jose Police Department. "It makes people feel anonymous and safe.''

But law enforcement officials say they are not.

Police need only to come to Silicon Valley, the center of the technology world, to follow a pedophile through cyberspace. San Jose police have been on their trail for years, and now law enforcement officials in Southern California have formed a task force to go online to catch people who sexually exploit children.

"Every piece of child porn on the Internet passes through here at some point because this is where all the major servers are,'' said Detective Steven McEwan, a member of San Jose's child exploitation detail.

In September, U.S. Customs agents and law enforcement officials conducted the biggest Internet porn sting in history. Sixty alleged members of the Wonderland Club were arrested in the United States and in 13 other countries for producing, selling and trading child pornography. Some of the defendants are also accused of sexually abusing children. The case is an offshoot of a 1996 San Jose-based investigation involving the FBI and Monterey police.

San Jose's child exploitation detail, the first of its kind in the state and the only one in Northern California, has cracked cases nationwide by posing undercover online. As early as 1984, when the detail was first formed, police realized the need for specialization when investigating child sex cases.

Eleven years later, the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement team was formed in Los Angeles. The group, made up of officers from local, state and federal agencies, also infiltrates the Web to catch pedophiles.

"Twenty years ago, your molester would have been in the park,'' McEwan said. "Today, they come into your house via the computer.''

Politicians agree and are trying to strengthen prison penalties for pedophiles who use the Internet to look for victims.

On October 22, President Clinton signed the Child Online Protection Act. The new law would make it a crime, punishable with prison terms of up to six months and fines of as much as $50,000 per offense, for operators of commercial Web sites to make certain types of graphic sexual material available to children younger than 17 years old.

A coalition of 17 free-speech organizations filed suit opposing the statute, saying it violates the First Amendment.

Most free-speech advocates do not object to police posing undercover on the Internet. But they say that there is nothing illegal about people merely discussing their desire to perform acts that might be illegal.

"There is certainly nothing wrong with people meeting in chat rooms and sharing like interests,'' said Terry Francke, a lawyer for the First Amendment Coalition.

But if those interests extend to sexually explicit pictures being passed from friend to friend, it is a felony, according to the law.

In the Wonderland Club, prospective members were required to supply 10,000 images of kiddie porn to join, authorities said.

Investigators are now using seized pictures to solve missing- children cases.

McEwan believes that more than ever, law enforcement and parents should regularly monitor the Web.

Nearly a decade ago, Detective Jim Rodrigues, one of the early members of San Jose's child exploitation team, logged on to a computer sex bulletin board hoping to catch a pedophile. At the time, it was a fairly new technique. Before computers, undercover cops frequented sex clubs and X-rated movie houses to get their leads.

Lambey and DePew were later arrested in a Virginia motel room. The two were tried and convicted and are serving more than 30 years in federal prison.

Cases like this are rare, police agree. But incidents of adolescents having sex with adults they meet on the Internet are becoming an everyday occurrence, police say.

Earlier this year, Los Angeles officials arrested a 43-year-old Calabasas man who lured a 13-year- old Connecticut girl he met in a chat room into a hotel room to have sex.

But even more chilling, according to investigators, is the international network of pedophiles who use the Internet to trade sexually explicit photographs of minors and participate in interactive online child molestations using digital cameras.

Last year, ringleaders of a notorious Internet child-pornography operation known as the Orchid Club were sent to federal prison. The group, which met in an Internet chat room, swapped stories about child sex and exchanged sexually explicit pictures of young girls.

A former Soledad prison guard and a Santa Rosa man, both Orchid Club members, were convicted of molesting five girls, ages 4 to 10, and transmitting the images on the Internet.

According to prosecutors, the men molested a 10-year-old girl in Monterey, while members all over the world watched and participated by asking for various poses via the Internet. One man who took part from Illinois admitted to FBI agents that he joined the group because he thought the Internet was safe -- far away from the probing eyes of law enforcement.

If a moderator feels the need to edit or remove a post then it's their decision. Nobody mentioned 'rights', except in my original post about the rights of the governing few who are able to delete posts and people at their discretion.

A message forum is about a two-way understanding between the site owners/moderators and the participants. I was under the impression people who use this site understand they can have their posts viewed, so long as they are not blatantly offensive or against specific site rules. It is not a privilege to have your voice heard here. Take away this service too often, and people with leave the forum - the forum is nothing without people.

I am saying this in the hope of shining a little humor and wisdom on this subject. DJ didn't mess with me much anymore after he met my "bitchy" side when I totally blew up at him on the phone. That was why we could remain friends, and why I picked on him on the forum (kind of as a reminder). So, the point is, don't be afraid to stand up to pervs like him online. There is danger no matter how you meet someone. And the internet is another way of meeting people. I have made several really good friends online; good decent people. I met my husband online. I have to agree. I think you take as many precautions as you can...but sometimes somebody you think is a friend takes advantage of that trust and/or kindness. That doesn't mean everyone you met on the 'net is a freak...in fact, I'd venture to say most of us are "normal" (relatively speaking;) )...we only hear about the weirdos...that's what makes news;) I have plenty of great friends in "real life", but have also met some wonderful people on the internet (most from this site) who are as important to me as those I see every day. Nobody said you were unusual..just said you were LUCKY you hadn't met one...and also, you might've met one...just not known it. And honestly, I don't think for most people it only happens on-line. I know more than my share of people who were molested, and 90% of the time it was by a relative or close friend of theirs...not by somebody they met on the 'net. Hey, the only reason I came back in the thread was to stress that not all the pervs find you online, in forums like this. And to advise caution in all aspects of your life, but at the same time, like BR said, lets not be paranoid. I have no problem with moving on, and the thread being closed. I have to admit, I had heard a little bit about what had been going on, and that's why I decided to browse the forum recently...esp. b/c a long time ago, I too had befriended one of the members in question. However, I realized how much I missed so many of the people here. Things got a little out of control a while back, so I decided to take a break...along with just not having as much free time as I used to. I'm sure they're bound to get out of control again ;) But in the meantime, I hope to stick around as much as I can :) And I guess this is all irrelevant to the topic at hand, so I digress;)
