I just purchased this on a DVD with three other flicks- all for $2.83. So my expectations were low going in...

It involved voodoo zombies, and they were dead flesh, and they did attack, so I kinda liked it. The acting is bad, but the zombies actually looked scary and were the highlight of the film. The best part comes at the end (SPOILER, as if anyone cares) when one of the stranded whites dudes who has become a zombie attacks the voodoo priest and the priest is forced to shoot him over and over again with no affect while the dead guy keeps coming forward. Then there is a tacked-on Hollywood ending where they "say" that the white guy was never really dead, and that he is recovering nicely from the bullet wounds. I guess the original ending was too morbid for 1944, with a war on and all...

I was going through my boxes in storage this weekend and apparently I own this movie! I think I remember buying it real cheap several years ago as a "this could be cheesy-cool!" I don't remember it being very good.

Thank god for Netflix now as I can watch movies before I buy them and don't add to a "what was I thinking" collection in storage.

I recently purchased this movie. It was on the Alpha Video label whose pictures quality varies. Alpha's DVD's can be bought 5 for $25.

The movie was atmospheric but was not what you would call a grade A thriller.

At times it could be creepy but it was made at one of the Poverty Row Studios and shows it.

The best part of the whole movie was Mantan Moreland, who played Charlie Chan's chauffer, Birmingham Brown in the latter Chan movies. It is his comic relief that steals the show.

For $5 it was enjoyable to watch and is one of those "just for fun" movies. I'm sure at a later date I will want to see it again if for nothing more than 67 minutes of fun while I eat my popcorn.
