House on Haunted Hill! He'll love it, it isn't gory, and it's exciting through and through.

Sounds good, I'll either watch that, or maybe friday the 13th, because he's obsessed with Jason, thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah! House on Haunted Hill is great for a kid, it is creepy and scary and not too much.
Night of the Living Dead would be good if he complains that Haunted Hill "isn't scary enough."

Friday the 13th, one could argue, is gory violence...whether it's too gory, only you can decide...
Gremlins 2 and Creepshow are both good. Gremlins 2 is of course the lighter, funnier of the two.

Yeah, Number 1 is the only one with not too much gore in it, so friday the 13ths are out, maybe house on haunted hill is a good idea, the night of the living dead, then creepshow if there's time, thanks guys.

Heh heh...happy to help!
I remember when I was a kid, on certain family visits to relatives' houses, I would find a ghost comic book, or something like that, mysteriously lying around, and I loved that kind of stuff and would immediately gravitate towards it.
Looking back now, I realize that those were put there specifically for me, because a horror comic was the quickest, cheapest way of keeping me quiet and out of trouble!

Creepshow - Totally.
The Stephen King segment will leave him rolling. My 9 year-old and 4 year-old both love it.
Then Gremlins 2

I agree with Roderick and crabby. Except for the stephen King thing, I hated that stupid plant garbage, lol.

I let him watch house on haunted hill, and he was terrified, I never let him watch Creepshow or night of the living dead because he'd probably die.

Aww...You probably should have just went with Gremlins 2
It really depends on the kid, each one has his/her own 'freak-out tolerance' level...Now that you know he's a little sensitive, you have a better idea of what to do next time...My kids always loved the Evil Dead movies when they were little, but if House On Haunted Hill was too much, I wouldn't suggest them
Next time, how about something like Godzilla or Tremors?...They still get the thrill of the 'horror' effect, but it shouldn't cause nightmares...Many kids are freaked out by anything supernatural that they feel they have no control over or that can't be easily explained, so ghosts and demons may not be so easy for him...Giant worms and Giant lizards are much more easily accepted as 'impossible' so the kid doesn't worry about them as much...Know what I mean?

Wow...and this was the original, not the remake, you say!
Y'see, that movie scared me pretty good when I was seven or eight or so, saw it on TV. And this was like thirty years back. So in a way, it is kind of encouraging to think that a kid can still be frightened, in this day and age, by an old-fashioned spooky-wooky movie like this. It means he's not desensitized by whatever scary CG stuff he has seen. Of course, it sounds like his folks don't let him watch scary stuff, and that, too, is something of a good sign, because at least they are taking some kind of active part in his development.
Yes. Night of the Living Dead would have been way, way, way too much.

Yeah, I think this is one of the first horror movies he's seen, good thing we watched this instead of friday the 13th or Creepshow.

He aint prepared for tougher horror.
I suggest you start him with easier stuff like Gremlins, Godzilla, King Kong type movies (as already suggested) then get him into the haunted ones like The Innocents and The Others, move on to Silver Bullet, The Changeling and Ghostbusters then take it from there.
He ll need some time adjusting to the massacres of Jason and Michael, more so Freddy and Pinhead, thats for sure.

Sounds good, maybe I should let his mom watchthe movies first so she can tell me if she thinks ready for them.

Well, 10 years ago this was me, so i guess I can speak pretty clearly about what would scare him or not, since it wasn't THAT long ago. Even though like already stated, it depends on the kid. I'd recommend Creature from the Black Lagoon, it isn't really scary, but it has a certain level of scare that people can all enjoy. Stuff like Jaws/ anaconda are great for younger crowds too. Maybe House?

Maybe House?
Hmm, I'm not real sure about that one...Anything where something in a dream can 'get you', tends to make some kids afraid to go to sleep

A few episodes of goosebumps or are you afraid of the dark would be awesome, that'll probably help alot.

Yeah, jumpy ones like the Sixth Sense (where he can identify with Willis and Osment) and the original Haunting can be a real help.
I wont recommend anything with gore so soon...because his mind is still coming to grasps with the horror genre. He needs to feel at home first, then he can go into the slasher/gore stuff.

Yes, remember, first it's apple sauce, then cooked vegetables chopped into little pieces, and then big pieces of cooked vegetables, and then raw vegetables. You gotta work up to it.

Yeah...House could be a little much. It's got some goofy visuals, but it still has a creepiness level that may be just a little high for a child...If I had seen it as a kid, it would have freaked me out.

Hey, even the Thumb-Thumbs in Spy Kids are a little scary.
You can try some horror comedy movies such as The Monster Squad, Hellboy and Nightbreed. Then try out some Stephen King movies, ones which dont have much blood or killings in them. Some Hammer horror movies with Christopher Lee as Dracula are good to watch for him.

I don't know when he's coming up next, but I'll probably watch the new godzilla, the first gremlins movie, or maybe just some goosebumps episodes.

There's The Others (2001), and then there's The Other (1972), but they have nothing to do with eachother, the plots are very different.

The Others of 2001, with Nicole Kidman.
The Other is also good, but he may find some scenes tedious and others too scary. Maybe when he is 3-4 years older, it will be good enough.
